Fujifilm X-Trans Sensor Receives Japanese National Invention Award
Fujifilm X-Trans
The Fujifilm X-Trans sensor has been awarded with the “National Invention Award” by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Scienes and Technology.
Finally a recognition, for a techonlogy, the X-Trans sensor, that has never really been marketed well by Fujifilm, and is sometimes misunderstood in the photo community.
I have written about the virtures of the X-Trans sensor vs Bayer sensor (and vice versa).
Let’s hope that, with today’s recognition, Fujifilm will start to promote X-Trans in a proper way.

Achieve high-quality photography by extracting the original resolution of the lens
Received an award from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and the “Invention Achievement Achievement Award” for the invention of the National Invention Award for “Invention of digital imaging elements using color filter arrays with low periodicity”.
Adopted as image sensor for mirrorless digital camera “X series”
Fujifilm Co., Ltd. (President: Kenji Sono) is an “invention of a digital imaging element using a color filter array with low periodicity” in the National Invention Awards sponsored by the Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation. Received the Minister of Science Award and the Invention Implementation Achievement Award. The present invention adopts the original low-periodic color filter array for the image sensor incorporated in our digital camera, so that it does not use an optical low-pass filter that has caused a reduction in resolution. * 1) to suppress high-quality photography. We have adopted this technology for mirror-less digital cameras “FUJIFILM X-T3”, “FUJIFILM X-T30” and other “X-TransTM CMOS” (* 2) sensors for “X series” (* 3) .
The National Invention Award is a system for awarding excellent inventions that are highly creative, with the aim of contributing to the improvement of Japan’s science and technology and industry development (* 4). The “Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award” is given to inventions that have excellent scientific and technological progress and have achieved remarkable implementation effects, and the “Invention Achievement Achievement Award” has the “Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award” It will be presented to the representative of a corporation that has won a special award, etc. This award is recognized for our “invention of a digital imaging device using a color filter array with low periodicity” that has greatly contributed to the promotion of science and technology in Japan and the development of the industrial economy.
The award ceremony will be held at Hotel Okura Tokyo on Monday, June 10, with the presence of the Grand Palace and his Royal Highness Princess.
* 1 A phenomenon in which colors not originally present in the subject appear as stripes.
* 2 X-TransTM is a trademark or registered trademark of Fujifilm Corporation.
* 3 Some models do not use “X-TransTM CMOS” sensor.
* 4 A historic award established to commemorate the 1925 payment of grace, based on the deep understanding of the imperial community for the Inventive Association’s encouragement work.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The color filter array employed in the image sensor of the conventional digital camera has high periodicity with 2 × 2 4 pixels as one unit, so regular patterns of the object such as fine checkered patterns and color filters It is said that the periodic arrangement of the two interferes and color moiré (* 1) tends to occur. Usually, an optical low pass filter is used between the lens and the image sensor to suppress color moiré, but the optical low pass filter has the problem of reducing the resolution.
[Content of the invention]
Inspired by the structure of a photographic film in which silver particles are irregularly arranged, an image sensor was developed that adopted a low-periodic color filter array having 36 pixels of 6 × 6 as one unit. Color moiré can be suppressed without using an optical low-pass filter, and the original resolution of the lens can be extracted. Furthermore, by arranging all three colors of red (R), green (G) and blue (B) on the same line in the horizontal and vertical directions, color information can be correctly acquired and the original color of the subject can be reproduced. is.
