Fujifilm TX-3 Digital Panoramic Camera: Fujifilm Debating Between Bayer or X-Trans Sensor

Here is a little update regarding the Fujifilm TX-3… and in case you missed the previous episodes:

To be clear, I call it the Fujifilm TX-3 not because it will surely be called this way (I don’t know the name yet), but because it is basically the digital successor the XPan/TX- series, the Fujifilm TX-1and TX-2 65×24 panoramic film cameras.

Anyway, the update is this one:

The options for such a sensor are currently two: a cropped medium format Bayer sensor or a doubled X-Trans sensor.

Or, in other words, the decision would be between a Bayer sensor (cropped GFX) or an X-Trans sensor (doubled APS-C sensor).

Let us know which one you’d go for in the survey below.

And the image above is a rendering made by Pavel which we shared in a dedicated article here.

My personal preference? Both layouts have their Pros and Cons (as we elaborated here). But since this would be a camera for stills, I’d ultimately go for X-Trans if possible. Optimized processing speed is not so relevant for a camera that is not really intended to shoot video or sports/action photography.

Last note: this is not a rumor in the sense that it gives you the final answer on Fujifilm’s decision. I can’t give answers to questions that not even Fujifilm Japan itself has yet answered. But I thought that this time I would anticipate this insight, not waiting for the final decision, but letting you know about the current state of Fujifilm’s decision making, because I am very interested in what you guys would want Fujifilm to use.

Why a Digital XPan Fujifilm TX-3 Camera is NOT Needed

Look guys,

I am fan of the idea of Fujifilm launching the Fujifilm TX-3 digital XPan camera in 2028.

I support this idea and I hope that that rumor will become true in a few years from now.

And I am not the only one.

FR-reader Pavel has written a wonderful article about why a digital XPan is needed and has shared lots of gorgeous samples.

I have also added my own thoughts to this debate.

But FujiRumors is a community. And in a community we can have different ideas.

And we love to give space to people who have a different view on certain things, even if those views do not match with my ideas.

And today it’s Timothy (Instagram @gibsonetal), who dropped me an email and told me why a digital Fujifilm TX-3 XPan camera is not needed.

I’ll share this thoughts below and you are free to drop your feedback in the comments below.

No ultra-wide TX-1 or XPAN? Just get an anamorphic lens!

Fujifilm TX-3: Why Not Just Crop?

The latest Fujifilm TX-3 digital panorama camera rumors have raised one question mainly: why buy a dedicated 65:24 camera if the Fujifilm GFX has already such a crop mode built into the camera?

Pavel already answered this question for us in a dedicated guest post (with lots of beautiful images). You can check it out here.

I just wanted to add my own thoughts to it.

So again, buy a dedicated 65:24 camera if the Fujifilm GFX has already such a crop mode built into the camera?

There are even adapters, such as the Kipon GFX-XPAN adapter, that allow you to mount Hasselblad XPAN Lenses on Fujifilm GFX cameras.

Well, first of all, none of the Fujinon GF lenses is specifically designed for the 65:24 format.

And if Fujifilm proceeds with its XPan plans, then they could also design specialized lenses optimized for panoramic photography. It could be a fixed lens (if the camera was a fixed lens camera) or a few lenses for panoramic photography (in case of an interchangeable lens camera).

Specialized lenses designed for  a specialized sensor will always give optically better results, with minimal distortion, best sharpness etc.

Also, shooting with a panoramic camera encourages photographers to think differently about composition. Instead of relying on cropping to achieve a desired composition, photographers must carefully frame their shots within the panoramic format, leading to more intentional and thoughtful compositions.

This also leads to a potential creative boost, as photographers will be “forced” to see the world in new ways (the “panoramic world”) and therefore might be more inclined to explore different perspectives and experiment with unconventional compositions.

So yes, you can simply crop a regular GFX image. But a dedicated panoramic camera provides a more authentic and immersive experience for photographers who appreciate the unique characteristics and creative possibilities of panoramic photography.

And look, for many this might not matter. But there is a niche out there who finds inspiration and joy in the process of shooting with a dedicated panoramic camera.

For them, owning such a camera is not just about capturing images; it’s about embracing a distinct style, exploring creative possibilities, and finding fulfillment in the art of panoramic photography.

And you know Fujifilm: they don’t see niche as a waste of money and time.

On the contrary: Fujifilm recognizes that niche photographers embody the genuine essence of photography and that they represent one of the purest form of photographic passion.

And given Fujifilm’s massive photography history, I consider Fujifilm at this point the only brand capable of nurturing this niche with a dedicated camera. I mean, technically also Hasselblad, but since they are now owned by DJI, the DNA of Hasselblad has deeply changed.

Meet the Fujifilm TX-3 XPan Digital Camera (Concept)

One of the most read articles back in 2020 here on FujiRumors was the guest post titled “The X-Pan Rebirth of Fujifilm X-Pro1“, where a reader modified his X-Pro1 into an X-Pan digital camera.

And every now and then the wish of a digital Fujifilm X-Pan camera surfaces again in the Fujifilm community such as here, here and here.

Well, today we have another request for a Fujifilm X-Pan camera coming from Pavel and shared over at his youtube channel SuperSuperka (video below).

He so severely wants a digital XPan Fujifilm camera, that he made a very nice rendering on how he imagines it to be.

He called his rendered X-Pan camera the Fujifilm TX-3, of course inspired by what Jonas Rask called “the most beautiful camera ever created“, the Fujifilm TX-1. He wrote me:

Some notes about the concept. It has GFX sensor cut in half, which gives just perfect match to Xpan proportions
Logarithmic response pixels are not commonly used, but are used in technical tasks. What they can do is to not mimic film but to have native film-like look.
Arca-swiss is the bottom of the body. No additional plates needed. OVF with phase-detect autofocus.
I used 28mm which with this sensor is a bit wider FOV then original 45mm on Xpan. Like, say, 40mm on Xpan.

Quite frankly, at this point, if Fujifilm was to adventure itself in a crafting a unique niche digital camera, then I’d personally find a digital X-Pan much more appealing over let’s say a monochrome Fujifilm X camera.

What about you? Feel free to vote the survey down below.

RUMOR: Fixed Lens Fujifilm GFX Coming First Half of 2025

We already told you that Fujifilm will launch a fixed lens GFX in 2025.

Well, thanks to our trusted sources today we can be a bit more precise: the fixed lens Fujifilm GFX will come in the first half of 2025.

That’s as far as the announcement goes. But looking at Fujifilm’s track record in terms of shipping, I’d say (sarcastically) that it will ship in 2028 shortly before the Fujifilm TX-3 announcement.

The fixed lens GFX will come with a 28mm equivalent lens.

And no, the image above does not show the fixed lens GFX, but the Fujifilm GF670W.

October 14 X Summit: Beyond New Gear, Fujifilm’s Spotlight on Design Might Steal the Show

If I should point out one single thing that really intrigued me to follow the just announced Fujifilm X Summit on October 14, then it’s the highlight Fujifilm put into the “Design” aspect of the event.

I mean, all the new gear is nice and good. But it could be the design aspect to really steal the show, just as it did in the past.

But let’s go with order.

The X summit on October 14 will take place at the Fujifilm’s design center “Clay Studio” in Tokyo.

Fujifilm said in the launch video:

The theme of the X Summit is “design”. From product design to engineering design, we will deliver new information to you from a design perspective. You won’t be disappointed with the X summit.

This theme opens up a lot of exciting possibilities.

Fujifilm could give us rare insights into how they develop and produce new gear, offering a behind-the-scenes look at their design philosophy and processes. From the initial concepts for a new product to the real-life challenges they encounter during development, all the way through to final production.

Now that alone would be very interesting to me. But I am a nerd for such things. And by the way, the best insight in terms of Fujifilm gear manufacturing we got so far is this one here.

But we could get more than that.

We might even see mockups or future concept designs that showcase Fujifilm’s vision for the evolution of their product line and maybe even get development announcements.

It happened already in the past, when Fujifilm displayed the moduar GFX design concept, or they made the Fujifilm X-Pro3 development announcement, or when they displayed the first design concepts and mockups of the Fujinon XF33mmF1.0.

They even showed us early GFX concepts including an X-T styled GFX (which btw showed us the hidden LCD screen concept half a year before the X-Pro3 development announcement) and much more.

And whenever Fujifilm has showcased potential design concepts for the future, those ideas have consistently overshadowed the actual products announced at the event.

Who knows, maybe we will even get first design hints to the Fujifilm TX-3 panoramic camera possibly coming in 2028 or the fixed lens GFX scheduled for 2025.

Emphasizing design could provide us with valuable insights into the direction Fujifilm plans to take with its future products.

But whatever Fujifilm will show us, this focus on design has the potential to be the most captivating part of the event.

I, for one, can’t wait to see what Fujifilm reveals, as I have a strong feeling it will satisfy my inner nerd and tech enthusiast… and who knows, maybe even give us a glimpse into the good stuff to come in future ;).

Fujifilm’s All-New Camera Very Likely to Come in 2025

Some of you guys asked me in the comments to our new camera new sensor size rumor, when that camera will come.

I can’t yet confirm it 100%, which is why usually I am reluctant to share such rumors (we value having a 100% accuracy).

But I thought I make an exception this time, because many still think that we are talking about the Fujifilm TX-3 panoramic camera.

So to be clear: the Fujifilm TX-3 might come (if it comes) in 2028.

The camera we are talking about in this case though, will come much earlier.

Our sources told us it should happen sometimes in 2025, so well before the Fujifilm TX-3 panorama camera.

But please, take it with a grain of salt for now. I mean, I am confident that the time frame is accurate, but to be 100% sure I need to get it multiple confirmed.

In any case: it will be quite a while before it comes (2025), but the wait won’t be that long as the one for the Fujifilm TX-3.
