Fujifilm Officially Recommends to Turn On OIS for Tripod Use on Fujinon XF 16-80mm F4 and XF 200mm F2

Best Friends: OIS and Tripod

We have all grown up with the idea (some call it “myth”), that we always should turn off OIS when working on a tripod.

Also Fuji X guru Rico Pfirstinger recommends this in his top rated Fuji X eBooks (at least the ones I have read).

And indeed, I feel like it’s still a good idea to switch off OIS. And in the comments Bob Cooley tells you why you should definitely switch it off for video.

But, looking at the owner’s manuals for all X and G mount lenses, I’ve noticed that Fujifilm officially recommends to keep OIS on, even when working on a tripod, on the following two lenses:

Fujinon XF 8-16mm F2.8 and XF 200mm F2 Compared to Equivalent Full Frame Glass, Owner Manuals, Reviews and More

Fujinon APS-C vs Equivalent Full Frame Glass

The Fuji year 2018 saw the arrival of two high-end, fast and top quality lenses, the Fujinon XF200mm f/2 LM OIS WR and the Fujinon XF 8-16mm f/2.8 LM WR.

Both Fujinon lenses are still smaller, lighter and cheaper than perfectly equivalent full frame glass, as you can see in this comparison, where we compare the Fujifilm XF200mm f/2 (with 1.4 TC) versus the Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L and the Fujinon XF8-16mm f/2.8 with the Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM.

Check out the comparison here.

Price and size is one of the advantages of an APS-C system. For more advantages, read this article.

And as soon as the Fujinon XF33mm f/1.0 hits the market in 2020, Fuji’s APS-C system will have also an equivalent to something like the Nikkor 58mm f/1.4G and the Sigma 50mm f/1.4.

So, that was the fast glass.

But many people, who buy into an APS-C system, probably do it because they look for the best balance between size, weight, price and performance.

Lenses like the Fujinon XF 16mm f/2.8 (which will come soon) and the Fujinon XF 16-80mm f/4 (which will come later), perfectly fit into the philosophy of the “balance“. Great performance in a compact, flexible, portable and affordable package.

My prediction: Fujifilm will sell the XF16mmF2.8 and XF16-80mmF4 like hot cakes, just like they do with their f/2 trinity, the XF23mmF2, XF35mmF2 and XF50mmF2.

Good that Fujifilm is boosting up its lens production by 70%.

But today’s roundup is all for the big and fast guys, the Fujinon XF 8-16mm f/2.8 LM WR and Fujinon XF200mm f/2 LM OIS WR. Enjoy it.

Matt Granger Fujinon XF 200mmF2 Review and More First Impressions

Matt Granger tested the Fujinon XF200mmF2 and he considers it a great lens. And even though $6,000 sounds much (and it is much), he thinks that the lens is worth the money, if we consider its performance.

And not only Matt is blown away. Check out more down below.

Fujinon XF 200mmF2 Sample Images and Old Vs. New 1.4x Teleconverter Comparison

Fujinon XF 200mm F2 Samples

Fujifilm X-shooter Surachart Chandenduang is testing the brand new XF200mmF2. He is photographing ice skaters and takes some portraits on the beach with the 200/2.

In his camera bag there is also a Nikon D5 with 70-200, and you can see it compared to the X-T2 with XF200 on his facebook page here.

Fujinon XF 200mm F2: BHphoto, Adorama, AmazonUS

Rico Pfirstinger has published a comparison between the old 1.4x teleconverter and new 1.4x teleconverter mounted on the Fujinon XF200mmF2 on his flickr here (where you will find many more XF200/2 samples).

Down below you see the results zoomed in 200%, and the new teleconverter delivers clearly superior resutls.

As I told you already months before announcements, the old 1.4x teleconverter was designed to work well only down until f/2.8, hence Fujifilm needed to design a new converter that works well also stopped down at f/2.

The new 1.4x Teleconverter is properly supported only by the XF200mmF2, so if you use it on other Fujinon lenses, it won’t work well.

Are the Fujinon XF 8-16mm F2.8 and XF 200mm F2 Too Expensive (POLL)? + Pre Orders at AmazonUS

New Fujinon Lenses

If AmazonUS is your prefered online retailer, then I inform you that they are taking pre-orders on the brand new Fujinon XF 8-16mm F2.8 here and Fujinon XF 200mm F2 here.

And regarding the new lenses, I am going through thousands of your comments in these past 3 days, and I can overall say:

  • most people are very satisfied with the new lenses on the roadmap
  • a good number of people think the XF 8-16 and XF 200 are too expensive

I don’t know if the XF 8-16 and XF 200 are really too expensive. What I know is that I am not one of those who thinks “it’s an APS-C lens, so it must be cheaper than equivalent FF lenses“.

And at the end of the day, the main deciding factor for the price of a lens is its image quality.

As they say, “you get what you pay for“.

And surely, the XF 8-16mm F2.8 and XF 200mm F2 price is definitely higher than most of us would have hoped, but if the image quality matches or even exceeds the one of its Canon and Nikon top of the line sibilings, then we will get what we pay for: the very best glass that makes no compromises in image quality, for a high, but at the end of the day fair, price.

We will have to wait for some lab tests and comprehensive real life reviews, to see if the image quality of the latest Fujinon lenses justifies its price. But I am somehow confident they will… and the first hands on experiences shared in our live blogging sound very promising :) .

Anyway… what do you think? Vote the poll below.

Is the Price of the XF 8-16mm F2.8 and XF 200mm F2 too Expensive?

Fujinon XF 200mmF2 Vs. Canon & Nikon 300mm FF Size and Weight Comparison

The Big Glass Comparison

Yesterday Fujifilm released the Fujinon XF200mm F2 OIS WR and Fujinon XF 8-16mm F2.8 WR.

Now camerasize added the XF200mmF2 to their system (not yet the 8-16), and you can now start compare all the combos you like with it.

I decided to compare it to it’s full frame equivalent lenses:

The Fujinon XF 200mm F2 is the lightest and shortest of the bunch.

Down below a comparison to the second largest Fujinon lens, the Fujinon XF 100-400.

Fujifilm XF 8-16mm F2.8 and XF 200mm F2 Images and Price Leaked

New Fujinon Lenses

The price and the first images of the Fujinon XF 200mm F2 and XF 8-16mm F2.8 have been leaked by nokishita.

In British pounds the lenses will cost:

  • XF 200mm F2 with new 1.4x Teleconerter – £5,399. ($7,000)
  • XF 8-16mm F2.8 – £1,799 ($2,332)

And how much in US Dollar $$$?

In UK, the XF 8-16mm F2.8 will be £100 ($130) cheaper than the XF100-400, which is sold in USA for $1,899. So maybe we will get for about $1,799 in USA?

Regarding the XF200mm F2, our sources said months ago it will be sold for about $6,000 with 1.4x TC.

Also, as we told you back in March, the XF200mm F2 won’t be black as displayed by Fujifilm at every photography fair, but white/light silver.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Both lenses will be announced in July… just stay tuned on FujiRumors, and you will get the live blogging 0,001 seconds after the announcements.
