Fujifilm Instax Square SQ6: The Ultimate Guide and Review

Instax SQ6

Over the last few days, while trying to decide if I should get the Fujifilm Instax SP-2 or Fujifilm Instax SP-3 for a friend, who becomes father soon, I have watched quite some Instax videos by Lauren from Photography Concentrate, since she has the best online coverage for all things Fujifilm Instax.

With the help of her videos, as well as the feedback of the FR-facebook community and FR-Twitter community here, I made my decision, and went for… well… I’ll tell you later ;) .

But today it’s not about my struggles, but about the brand new Fujifilm Instax Square SQ6.

Lauren has made a comprehensive video that includes also very useful tips on how to make the most out of your SQ6. It’s not always as easy as pressing the shutter button and it’s all good. With a few tips Lauren shares, you can often get much better results. You can see the video at the top of the article or direcly on youtube here. Down below the unboxing.

Discovering Fujifilm in 2018

Here on FujiRumors we talk about Fujifilm X and GFX gear every day since over 6 years now.

Those, who follow FujiRumors regularly, will also know in which direction Fujifilm is going, may it be the Fujifilm X-T3, the GFX 50R, the X-T100, the GFX 100S… and there is more to come… you definitely want to follow us also on Facebook, RSS-feed and Twitter if you want to stay in the loop ;) .

So, in our eyes, talking about the Fujifilm X100F might seem old news.

But believe it or not, despite Fujifilm being every year more successful, X-shooters are still a relatively small niche in the photography world and many people don’t even know that Fujifilm makes highly sophisticated mirrorless cameras.

So today I’d like to highlight 2 huge youtubers (with well over a million subscribers), who recently stumbled upon the Fujifilm X system, more specifically the (now discounted) Fujifilm X100F.

The enthusiasm they show, when they talk about their “discovery” of the Fujifilm X system, reminds me a lot to my own excitement, when, after migrating from Canon to Sony, from Olympus to Panasonic, I finally discovered the Fuji X system.

I can without a doubt say that the X-system, although not perfect for everybody, was perfect for me. Why? Because I had so much fun shooting with it like never before. A fun that never stopped until today.

It’s No Coincidence

It’s no coincidence, that photographers, who have a long story with Canon or Nikon (like the two youtubers today), start their Fuji X adventure with an X100 line camera.

In fact, the X100F serves also this purpose.

It’s a compact, fixed lens, high quality and feature packed camera (hybrid viewfinder, build in ND-filters, film simulations and more), that is also ment to serve as a second camera for those photographers, who have already invested heavily into other systems, and do not want to buy into a completely new one.

So to speak, the Fujifilm X100F could be seen also as the “gateaway drug” into the X world.

CaNikon shooters get it as a small second camera for everyday use, start to have fun with it, enjoy the film simulations, the good old classic controls, get familiar with the X cameras, and at some point might be tempted to ditch their old system and switch to interchangeable Fujifilm X cameras… maybe a story that might sound familiar to some of you guys ;) .

When it comes to getting a new camera, it can sometimes be a daunting task. A number of people have asked me what settings to apply when you first get the camera, so this will cover off what I would recommend setting up and why. Some of this will be a bit subjective so if you disagree, you probably know enough about the settings to know why.

I’ll continue to update this article and include the date at the top of the article as I update to ensure that readers are aware of whether it has been updated to include a specific version. If you think I’ve missed anything in the article, please let me know at the bottom in comments. When I set this up I went through my menu’s looking at the items that were important to me, but I could well have missed something.

This guide is specific to the newer range of cameras, the X-H1, X-T2, X-E3 and alike, but most of these settings could probably be applied to almost any Fujifilm camera.

Fujifilm X-T2 Firmware 4.00: First Looks, New Features Test and Follow Up on Possible External Monitor Recording Bug

So the Fujifilm X-T2 firmware 4.00 is out since a few days now, and we can now find more and more people enjoying the new features and sharing their testings on the web.

You will find a selection of X-T2 firmware 4.00 testings down below.

But first, a mandatory update to a possible bug we reported here. The issue is that when shooting F-log with an external monitor plugged in via HDMI, the X-T2 shows it is recording onto the SD-card, but in fact it is not.

Now Josh uploaded part 2 of the video, and he shows the different settings he used. A bug? Or maybe something wrong with the settings? Feel free to leave your feedback in the comments.

And here is more feedback and testing.
