Matt Granger Fujinon XF 200mmF2 Review and More First Impressions

Matt Granger tested the Fujinon XF200mmF2 and he considers it a great lens. And even though $6,000 sounds much (and it is much), he thinks that the lens is worth the money, if we consider its performance.

And not only Matt is blown away. Check out more down below.

Fujifilm X-Trans vs Bayer Sensor Quick Blind Test Comparison: Which One do you Prefer?

X-Trans vs Bayer Blind Test

Little weekend game :)

Since we recently talked about Fuji colors vs Nikon, Sony and Canon, let’s do a fun little (and non scientific) blind test with you guys.

This time we compare the Fujifilm X-T20 X-Trans with the Fujifilm X-T100 Bayer CMOS sensor cameras.

Both cameras were used with the Fujinon XC15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS PZ.

Keep in mind that this is not only a comparison between X-Trans and Bayer, but also a comparison between different processing engines.

I did the test, and my score is 1 to 5 for X-Trans. Only for 1 case I could not see a significant difference, in all other cases I went straight for X-Trans.

To my taste, the color rendition of the Fujifilm X-T100 was in some cases a bit exaggerated and less natural, for example in the cloudy sky or the rusty chain. Also, in my eyes, on the X-T20 green/yellow leaves overall looked more natural and less plasticky.

Maybe that’s due to the more aggressive processing applied by the processor used in Fuji’s Bayer cameras, which is something we have analyzed already back in 2013 here, when we compared the Bayer X-A1 to the X-Trans X-M1.

Ready to test?

Then go to the Chinese site dc.fever and drop your vote.

Also, let us know your results in the comments and in the poll down below.

Fujifilm X-T3 is Three-Time Winner in DPReview Updated Buying Guides

Fujifilm X-T3

The Fujifilm X-T3 continues to win awards at the various popular review blogs, and also all the big youtube channels praise its virtues.

But if you don’t trust blogs and youtubers, you might trust the Fujifilm X-T3 AmazonUS customer reviews.

The Fujifilm X-T3 collects so many 5 stars reviews, that the Amazon Fuji X-T3 page makes for a good astrophotography shot and I am surprised that the Fuji X-T3 didn’t also win the mid-term elections ;).

And it’s not over yet!

In fact, DPReview just updated fifteen of their camera buying guides, and the Fujifilm X-T3 came out on top in three of them.

The Fujifilm X-T3 is their number 1 pick in the following categories:

Best camera under $1500

Easy win. Can’t think of any new camera that is better value for money at the moment.

“The Fujifilm X-T3 is one of the best APS-C cameras ever made and one of the most adept cameras full-stop, if you want to shoot both stills and video.

Its image quality is excellent, with a choice of attractive ‘Film Simulation’ color modes and detailed, flexible Raw files. Autofocus with most X-series lenses is snappy with effective focus tracking, eye-detection AF for portraits and zone focus modes that will adapt to a range of sports. This is on top of a well-respected interface which blends traditional dials with a good degree of customization.

We’re particularly impressed that the X-T3 does all this while also offering some of the best video we’ve encountered. It can shoot highly detailed 4K footage (UHD or DCI) at up to 60p with the option for 10-bit capture for maximum grading leeway. Useable (though not flawless) video AF makes it comparatively easy to get good results, too. Only the lack of in-body stabilization counts against its go-everywhere, capture everything credentials.

The Fujifilm lens range isn’t as extensive as some systems, but there’s a good choice of sensibly priced lenses that go well with the X-T3.”

Best camera for video

It’s on par with the Panasonic GH5 and GH5S.

While the GH5 and GH5S offer the strongest video specs and supporting tools, the Fujifilm X-T3 gives them a run for the money, being a better stills camera. The Fujifilm can also shoot 4K video at up to 60p and can do so in 10-bit for greater editing flexibility. In addition its video autofocus produces good results across a fairly broad range of shooting situations.

As well as offering top-notch video, the X-T3 is an excellent stills camera. Its 26MP BSI CMOS sensor produces great Raw files and JPEG images with some of the most attractive color in the industry. What makes it one of our favorite do-it-all cameras is that its offers a range of traditional controls with a good level of customization that makes it easy to swap back and forth between stills and video shooting. Only the lack of in-body stabilization counts against it.”

Best camera people and events

Wedding photographers, rejoice! The Fujifilm X-T3 beats tons of Full Frame cameras like the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, Nikon D850, Nikon Z7, Sony a7R III and is top choice along with Sony A7III.

The Fujifilm X-T3 can’t match the A7III for absolute image quality, but it’s a great choice for portraiture and event photography thanks to its excellent colors, eye-detect autofocus and compatibility with Fujifilm’s high-quality range of prime lenses.

The X-T3 features a range of built-in Film Simulation modes, which deliver excellent results. These can easily be sent wirelessly to Fujifilm’s SP-2 Instax printer. These tiny instant prints make great gifts and conversation-starters at events. As well as high quality stills, the X-T3 is one of the best video cameras we’ve tested and one of the easiest for quick swapping between stills and video shooting.”

Well done, Fuji!

DPReivew also updated their Fujifilm X-T3 sample gallery here, and writes:

Since publishing our full Fuji XT3 review we’ve continued shooting with it – sometimes on assignment, and sometimes because we just like it so gosh darn much.”

Tony Northrup Color Sciene Comparison: Fujifilm vs Canon vs Sony vs Nikon – “Fujifilm Most Hated Brand. Sony Wins, Fuji Second”

Color Sciene

Tony Northrup launched a poll, where people voted which images they considered had the best colors.

He starts off analysing, if we just think a certain camera has the best colors because of brand loyalty.

So what he did is the following: sometimes he labeled pictures with numbers, and sometimes he put the fake brand names on the same images that don’t even match up to the pictures.

The results:

  1. Canon has the highest brand loyalty. Canon users picked an image 3.1 times more likely if marked with “Canon” than with a number, even though it was not a Canon image
  2. Sony 2.2x
  3. Nikon 1.5x
  4. Fujifilm 1.4x – the lowest brand loyalty. Tony says “maybe Fujifilm users are the most rational people

92% of people picked a different image when numbered or marked with brand name, showing that there was no consistency.

Interestingly, the most popular image when it was numbered (the Nr.1) suddenly became the least popular, when Tony wrote “Fujifilm” on it, even though it was exactly the same picture. It seems there is a lot of hate for Fujifilm by Sony, Canon and Nikon users out there.

Tony speculates that this is because Fujifilm users tend to be the meanest of all and can be very hostile, and kind of give “the whole brand a bad name“.

On the contrary, Fujifilm users downvoted only Sony, and not Canon and Nikon, which tells us about the brand rivalry.

Then back to the colors. He says “fake colors” are ok. People don’t upvote the most realistic colors, which is normal. In one example, the Nikon got the colors completely wrong, much to warm, and people voted it the best.

Color science is overblown, because if you see pictures individually, they are just fine. But photographers tend to compare.

White balance is more important than color science. When he adjusted white balance in post, results where much more balanced.

Tony says he adjusts colors in post anyway, so he never really cared much about “color science”.

The results for the best colors:

  1. Sony (1,336)
  2. Fujifilm (227)
  3. Nikon (-518)
  4. Canon (-605)

NOTE – Film Simulations Anyone?

I hope I will not pass for hostile and mean if I point this out, but what about film simulations?

Fujifilm is renown and loved for its color science, not because they created the universal profile that is best for everything, but because they offer the film simulations, which are created to give the best results in different shooting situations or to create a certain mood. Velvia for landscapes, Astia for skin tones, Acros for black and white, Classic Chrome for a vintage touch and when the story should stand out more than the colors, Sepia for nothing ;) etc…

And while I get the point that you can change colors in post, if the camera itself offers you a great starting point, then you simply have less work to do in post, which can save you a lot of time. We should not underestimate the value of passing less time on the computer editing images ;).
