DPReviewTV Crop Sensor Comparison: Fujifilm X-T3 Beats Nikon D500, Olympus EM-1 MK II and Panasonic G9

Chris and Jordan just released roundup/buyers guide for non-full frame shooters.

They look at the Fujifilm X-T3, Nikon D500, Olympus EM-1 MK II and Panasonic G9 and try to figure out which camera is better for landscapes, street, sports/wildlife, portrait photography and video.

SPOILER ALERT: The Fujifilm X-T3 ends on top in all categories but one :).

Chris starts by saying that:

  • APS-C and M43 offer a lot of versatility and can handle all kinds of photography
  • Full frame cameras are more specialized tools in a lot of ways

LANSCAPES

  1. Fujifilm X-T3 wins, due to highly effective APS-C sensor and great dynamic range. Excellent lenses. By a hair the winner
  2. Olympus EM-1 MKII and Panasonic G9 are on par. Have multishot pixel shift
  3. Nikon D500 not made for landscape, lower resolution sensor and big body. Not so portable

STREET PHOTOGRAPHY

  1. Fujifilm X-T3. Sexiest looking body. Dial controls very instinctual. Crazy fast AF. Eye AF is great. APS-C image quality better than M43
  2. Panaosnic G9 very close to Olympus. Better viewfinder and faster single AF, better eye AF
  3. Olympus EM-1 MK II
  4. Nikon D500 is big and bulky. Slow live view AF

SPORT/WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY

  1. Nikon D500 offers by far the most lens choices. Rugged and stable DSLR body. Best autofocus in the world
  2. Fujifilm X-T3 has some great lenses like the XF100-400 and new XF200mmF2. Insanely fast AF. Very capable sports and wildlife camera
  3. Panaosnic G9
  4. Olympu EM-1 MKII

PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY

  1. Fujifilm X-T3 is the clear winner. Great lenses. They care about APS-C lenses. Legendary color science with great skin tones. Great AF and vastly improved eye-AF
  2. Nikon D500
  3. Olympus EM-1 MK II
  4. Panaonic G9

VIDEO

  1. Fujifilm X-T3. Terrific video specs and Eterna profile is awesome. No IBIS and better battery life. But Fujifilm X-H2 will fix that. Fujifilm X-T3 is best hybrid video/still camera overall
  2. Panasonic G9
  3. Olympus EM-1 MK II
  4. Nikon D500

Overall, Fujifilm X-T3 is the way to go in the crop sensor world.

Awesome Fujifilm X-T3 vs X-T2 Comparison by Mirrorlessons. No Purple Flare and Wait for Fujifilm X-H2 “Sometime Next Year”?

Fujifilm X-T3 vs Fujifilm X-T2

Mathieu and Heather from Mirrorlessons have just published the complete Fujifilm X-T2 vs X-T3 comparison, and it’s arguably one of the very best you can right now find on the web.

Here are some key points:

BUILD QUALITY

  • X-T3 survived 90 minutes in the heavy rain photographing a soccer game
  • Refined sub-dials and command dials make them more comfortable to turn
  • More customization possibilities on X-T3 command dials

TOUCH SCREEN

  • X-T3 touch screen a bit slow and lacking responsiveness

POST PROCESSING

  • Capture One and Iridient render X-T3 files still better than Lightroom
  • Lightroom – unlike Capture One – adds lots of magenta shift by default to the X-T3 file to display the colours correctly (+65 which is very unusual). Perhaps it is a bug that will be fixed with the next update

IMAGE QUALITY and FILM SIMULATIONS

  • RAW Shadow recovery: both cameras perform well but the X-T3 file has less noise. The X-T2 exhibits some red colour cast
  • RAW Highlights recovery: X-T2 surprisingly retains a little more information
  • JPEG: The two cameras behave in a similar way including how they preserve highlights. The only small difference is that the X-T3 shows more noise in the dark areas but also more sharpness. This means there is less noise reduction applied than on the X-T2
  • Both cameras perform the same up to 12800 ISO, with perhaps slightly more noise in the X-T3 files but you really need to pixel-peep to see it
  • JPEG: more pronounced colour shift on the X-T2 the more you add noise reduction
  • SKIN TONES: With a manual kelvin temperature, both cameras shift towards a green tint but it is more contained on the X-T3.
  • White balance: the X-T3 produces a marginally cooler result for outdoor shots
  • Subtle changes in some film simulations

PURPLE FLARE and GRID ARTIFACTS

  • X-T3 doesn’t suffer at all from purple flare and grid artifacts

AUTOFOCUS

  • X-T3 autofocus breaths new life into older lenses
  • X-T3 much improved face and eye detection that rarely fail even in low-light environments
  • Car rally: the X-T3 only delivered 3 completely out of focus shots out of more than 200
  • Soccer: X-T3 has about the hit rate of the X-T2
  • Birds photography: keeper rate of 60/70%, or 85/90% if he includes slightly soft results. But when the bird flew closer, the AF was usually reactive enough to keep the subject in focus. Normally in this specific situation, the change in focus distance is too big and the action happens too fast for most mirrorless cameras to cope, but the X-T3 did better than most and proved to be capable of matching products such as the Sony A9 or Nikon D500

SPORTS MODE BUG

  • When using the camera in crop mode (Sports Finder or electronic shutter), some RAW files are not written correctly and end up with a vertical black band, making the photo unusable. The percentage is low (around 10 shots on more than 200). Maybe something Fuji can fix with a firmware update because it doesn’t happen when using the full sensor area

VIDEO

  • X-T3 less rolling shutter
  • X-T3 uses face and eye detection in 4K, the X-T2 only in 1080p
  • X-T3 superior video specs

FUJIFILM X-H2

  • The elephant in the room is called Fujifilm X-H2, which mirrorlessons thinks could be out “sometime next year” and they say it could be worth to wait a bit longer to get the superior ergonomics and IBIS of the Fuji X-H2.

Do make sure to head over at mirrorlesscomparison here and read the whole in-depth comparison. It’s definitely worth your time.

And if you are interested, we have launched a few polls regarding the Fuji XH2 as well as a timeline on when we can expect the Fujifilm X-H2, Fujifilm X-T4, Fujifilm X-T30, Fujifilm X-Pro3, Fujifilm X200 and Fujifilm X-E4.

  • POLL 1: Are you waiting for X-H2 to upgrade/switch or did you get the Fujifilm X-T3 already?
  • POLL 2: If the Fujifilm X-T3 had IBIS, would you prefer it over the Fujifilm X-H2?
  • TIMELINE: Fujifilm X Camera replacement timeline from 2011 to 2018 and what this could mean for X-H2, X-T4, X-T30, X-Pro3, X-E4, X200

Fujifilm GFX 50R Street Photography, Kai Wong Hands On and Could the Fujifilm GFX 100 have an X-Trans Sensor?

Fujifilm GFX 50R

William Chua took the Fujifilm GFX 50R out for some street photography in Cologne. You can read the full blog post and see the samples at williamchua.com. Some excerpts:

  • Being a GFX 50s user, he was not too excited about this camera. But after using it for a few days, he has to say he loves it more and more
  • Its a great camera for street photography
  • might not be as comfortable to use with big glass like the GF 250mm
  • in a lot of his sample images, he used face detection, and he’s glad to say it works extremely well

Jonas Rask shares his impressions of the Photokina 2018 in the best way possible: by sharing wonderful images taken with Fujifilm GFX 50R and X100F. Check out his article “When the floor dust settles” at jonasrask here.

Kai Wong was at photokina and shares his walkthrough the various booths. Of course he also checked out the Fujifilm GFX 50R. Jump to minute 5:43 here, to check out the part about Fujifilm.

MediumFormat: First Impressions of the Fujifilm GFX 50R at mediumformat

PhoBlographer writes in his Fujifilm GFX 50R first impressions that the Fujifilm GFX 50R is the camera he’s been waiting for. They would like a 50MP X-Trans version and pay even more for it, and faster glass (such as the rumored GF 80mm F1.4) would also be appreciated. Read it all at phoblographer here.

Spanish: The Spanish site albedomedia (translation) goes hands on with the Fujifilm GFX 50R. They share their impressions as well as some media slides including an overview of Fujifilm’s camera history, which you can see below.

Fujifilm GFX 100 MP X-Trans

ThePhoblographer had a talk with Fujifilm USA manager Justin Stailey, mainly about the Fujifilm GFX 50R, but there was also a question about the Fujfiilm GFX 100.

Phoblographer: Why isn’t the GFX 100MP sensor an X Trans sensor?
Justin: I don’t think we said that it was or was not X-Trans. but…In Medium Format, the Bayer Sensor has proven to provide excellent image quality

So, despite hinting that a Bayer sensor is more likely than an X-Trans sensor, Fuji Manager Justin did not exclude the possibility it could be a 100 Megapixel X-Trans sensor. Read the whole interview at phoblographer.

We remind you that the Fujifilm GFX 100 megapixel camera should offer pixel shift multishot, which would indicated that a Bayer sensor is more likely. Read more here.
