DPReview: Fujifilm X-T3 Image Quality Very Competitive at Low ISO and Changes in Adobe’s Processing

Fujifilm X-T3 Image Quality

DPReview is completing their full Fujifilm X-T3 review, and right now they anticipated their Fujifilm X-T3 image quality conclusions. They write:

  • The X-T3 slightly lower base ISO (160) provides a small but measurable improvement over its predecessor
  • The highest ISO settings fall behind the best of its peers
  • Raw detail: X-T3 does well, relative to its peers, but with no sign of moiré
  • Overall, the X-T3 is very competitive in terms of noise until its very highest ISOs
  • JPEG color lives up to Fujifilm’s usual high standard
  • The default sharpening seems to strike a good balance between emphasizing detail without going over-the-top

Regarding Adobe, and the difference they notice between X-T2 and X-T3 at ISO 25,600 and 51,200, they write:

  • significant differences between the X-T2 and X-T3 at high ISOs. Read noise measurements suggest difference around 1/3 of a stop but visually the Adobe Camera Raw conversions look more like a whole stop
  • A discussion with Adobe revealed that they’ve made some changes to “increase accuracy of shadow (near-zero) values in raw files,” which can give deeper blacks and more contrast in dark regions of the image. Even re-processing the X-T2 files using this revised processing still doesn’t fully account for the differences we’re seeing at very high ISOs

So they tried Capture One, and they write:

  • With noise reduction minimized, the X-T3 still exhibits more noise than the X-T2. Not quite as dramatically as in ACR, but the difference is still there

Their explanation and conclusions are

  • The most likely explanation we can think of for this discrepancy is a very slight increase in read noise as a result of running all the electronic components faster, to allow the faster sensor readout. At the highest ISOs even a tiny increase in read noise would be amplified many, many times. If this is the case then the slightly reduced high ISO performance is the price you pay for the camera’s increased speed. Whether this trade-off makes sense for you is likely to depend on how often you use ISO 25,600 and 51,200

Kai’s Fujifilm X-T3 Review: “The X-T3 is One Reason Not to go Full Frame. One of the Best Cameras of the Year”

Kai’s Fujifilm X-T3 Review

Kai just published his Fujifilm X-T3 hands on review here. Here the key points:

  • It’s quite mind blowing how much stuff they put into the X-T3
  • Looks same as X-T2, but ergonomically Fuji made a several little improvements
  • he runs over the specs we already know
  • X-H1 more robust body with top LCD screen
  • Battery life improved, but still not the best
  • face and eye AF is really good, quick, so snappy
  • focus is fantastic
  • AF tracking is good
  • 30 fps is crazy
  • low light AF is pretty acceptable
  • noise performance is good up to 12,800
  • not too expensive camera, it’s a bargain in comparison to X-H1
  • X-T3 shutter is not as super quiet as X-H1
  • there is still life in crop
  • for video, the Fujifilm X-T3 has slightly more dynamic range than Panasonic GH5
  • for video, the continous AF is quick and very accurate. Could have smoother focus transition
  • no IBIS, but with stabilized lenses works good for handheld video
  • rolling shutter quite low and very good
  • X-T3 is possibly one of the best cameras of the year
  • if you are thinking of going full frame, the X-T3 is one reason not to go FF
  • tasty Fujifilm colors
  • a hot performer for stills and video
  • if it had IBIS, it would make the X-H1 pointless

Let the Fujifilm X-T3 Review Victory Parade Begin: “Images of Outstanding Quality” – 5 Stars and Essential

Fujifilm X-T3 Review

Now that the Fujifilm X-T3 is falling into the hands of more and more photographers, the reviews are popping up on the web like mushrooms after a rainy autumn day.

Here on FujiRumors we regulary make major Fujifilm X-T3 review roundups, for example check out this gigantic one here or the DPReview TV X-T3 review here.

This time I’d like to inform you, that the first reviews are now appearing at the dedicated Fujifilm X-T3 AmazonUS customer review page.

As you can see from the screenshot above, they are mostly enthusiastic, but of course not all of them. Check them all out here.

And also photographyblog has published its full Fujifilm X-T3 review here. From the conclusions:

The Fujifilm X-T3 produces images of outstanding quality. It records noise-free JPEG images from ISO 80 all the way up to 6400, with a little noise at ISO 12800 and more visible noise and slight colour desaturation at the faster settings of ISO 25600 and 51200, an amazing performance for a camera with an APS-C sensorThe RAW files were also excellent, exhibiting more noise but still producing very usable images from ISO 80-12800. […]

The Fujifilm X-T3 is the best APS-C mirrorless camera on the market, whether you’re a photographer, videographer or a mixture of both. […]

Sure, it may not be one of the new breed of full-frame mirrorless cameras that have dominated the photography news pages for the last few months, but its definitely one of the best mirrorless cameras around, proving that sensor size is not the be all and end all…

The Fujifilm X-T3 will cream off quite some more review awards I am sure :).

DPReview TV: Fujifilm X-T3 Review

Chris and Jordan from DPReview TV just published their full Fujifilm X-T3 review on the DPR youtube channel here. Some key points:

STILLS by Chris

  • X-T3 has 1/3rd stop better dynamic range over X-T2 at base ISO, but slightly worst at high ISO (a worthy trade-off for higher megapixel and full sensor PDAF)
  • Rolling shutter very good
  • Eye-Detect autofocus tracking is very good, but Sony still slightly higher hit rate.
  • by far the most capable Fujifilm focusing camera. Easily handle wedding, sports, wildlife etc.
  • Face detection can occasionally lock on something else, and not on face
  • You can’t toggle and select the face to track, if you have more faces in frame

I remind you that lab tests at Photonstophotos here, show that the X-T3 is slightly better dynamic range at base ISO as well as high ISO.

VIDEO by Jordan

  • Skin tones, colors and contrast are impressive
  • Video AF very reliable. Minimal wobbling
  • Jordan would like the ability to tab the subject on touch screen and camera starts tracking like Nikon Z7
  • Separate video/stills exposure if you use silent movie controls
  • 4K video is very clean and very sharp, does not look oversharpened
  • 120fps quality is very good, quite sharp. Less moiree and aliasing than Sony
  • image does not require much post processing
  • one of the strongest video mirrorless out there
  • He says Fuji should better come out with a Fujifilm X-H2 soon
  • X-T100 flippy screen would have been nice

CONCLUSION

  • Fujifilm X-T3 has significant upgrades
  • AF is really that much better
  • better EVF
  • can handle any kind of photography
  • only negative, is lack of IBIS
  • fantastic APS-C camera
