DPReview Audio Quality Comparison: Fujifilm vs Sony vs Canon vs Nikon vs Panasonic vs Olympus
DPReview compared the pre-amp of various cameras to determinate which camera has the best audio quality.
They compare:
- Sony A7III
- Fujifilm X-T3 (which DPR says has the same pre-amp of the Fujifilm X-T4)
- Olympus EM1 MKIII
- Panasonic S1H
- Nikon Z6
- Canon 1DX MK III
THE RESULTS
Proper Audio Levels
Most of the cameras sounded great. Only the Sony A7III was a shocker with how bad it sounded
Low microphone levels and boost in post
Each camera had more noise, but there were some surprises.
- Canon 1DX MK III – sounded weird
- Nikon Z6 – sort of rushing water sound
- Olympus EM1 MKIII – sort of rushing water sound
- Panasonic S1H – sort of rushing water sound
- Fujifilm X-T3 – sort of rushing water sound and high pitch
- Sony A7III – very bad
High microphone levels
- Canon 1DX MK III – performed really well and natural sound
- Nikon Z6 – more similar to Canon. Natural and usable sound
- Olympus EM1 MKIII – not as bad as the Fujifilm, but not as good as the Nikon and Canon
- Fujifilm X-T3 – a little crunchier than he’d like. You can kind of hear the limiter affecting the audio, although it didn’t clip
- Panasonic S1H – something with that limiter didn’t sound great
- Sony A7III – sounds like garbage, it is so noisy
Overall Ranking
- Canon 1DX MK III
- Nikon Z6 and Panasonic S1H
- Fujifilm X-T3 – good sounding camera
- Olympus EM1 MKIII – nowhere near as good as the other cameras tested
- Sony A7III – the amount of noise is unbelievable, it’s last in all categories and might not even be fixable in post
