Fujifilm X-T4 IBIS Stress Tests vs X-H1, Panasonic S1H, OIS only vs IBIS only and More

Share

Andrew comprehensively tested the IBIS on the Fujifilm X-T4. It’s a 30 minutes video.

Just so you know, when below we talk about “scientific test”, it means Andrew placed the cameras on a massage gun. That way, he was able to induce the same amount of vibration to all the cameras he tested.

Down below you will find the video and the summary in a nuthsell, for those who can’t watch the full video right now.

X-T4 and the 16-55 2.8

  • pretty good
  • important zoom lens, now usable also for video
  • heavy lens, though, so for vlogging not ideal
  • whip-type motion when you move camera fast, where the IBIS on sensor is trying to catch up to your movement. Sometimes it can be a bit errant, and it wanders on its own

X-T4 and the 16mm 1.4

  • lens is loud when it focuses, hence not so good for vlogging

X-T4 and the 16mm 2.8

  • probably one of his favorite lenses for vlogging. Small, light, silent AF
  • it’s slightly wider than the 16mmF1.4
  • he prefers the 16/2.8 over the 16/1.4 for vlogging
  • no difference in stabilization between the 1.4 and 2.8 version

X-T4 and the 16-80 f4

  • the best optical image stabilization of any Fujinon lens
  • he says that in general, when you combine OIS with IBIS, the lens and sensor stabilization can fight against each other giving not as much stability as you would expect
  • that’s the case in stills also for Fujifilm X-T4
  • in video, when zooming, everything goes out of focus for a second, and this does not make it a great vlogging lens

X-T4 vs X-H1 w/ 16mm primes

  • handheld, he couldn’t see any real difference. Maybe the X-T4 did a little bit better
  • he went on making a more scientific test, and there it’s clear that the X-T4 does a much better job in controlling the movement

X-T4 w/ 16-55 2.8 (IBIS only) vs X-T3 w/ 16-80 f4 (OIS only)

  • IBIS of X-T4 is better than OIS only of 16-80mm used on X-T3
  • also in his more scientific test, the X-T4 has a clear advantage [NOTE: the video embedded below will automatically start at that point in the video]

X-T4 vs X-T3 w/ 16-80 f4

  • Video test: OIS of lens and IBIS of X-T4 are not fighting against each other, but working together in harmony more than he thought they would
  • X-T4 OIS/IBIS combo beats the X-T3 OIS only clearly

X-T4 w/ 16-80 f4 and w/16-55 f2.8

  • X-T4 works best, when an OIS lens is attached. Better than IBIS only

X-T4 vs X-T3 w/ 16-55 2.8

  • X-T4 performs better, but not as much as he thought it would, confirmed also by his more scientific test

X-T4 vs X-H1 w/ Zeiss 12mm 2.8 Touit

  • he used the X-T4 with IBIS + DIS (ditigal image stabilization) and X-H1 IBIS only, as it has no DIS
  • X-H1 has a slight crop in 4K, and X-T4 has no crop, but X-T4 has crop if DIS is enabled, so they equal out at the end (if X-H1 is used in 4K and X-T4 with DIS)
  • X-T4 beats X-H1
  • in his scientific test, the X-T4 without DIS works better than X-T4 with DIS enabled
  • he wonders if DIS works only well with Fujinon lenses
  • he tested the XF16/1.4, and there DIS works better than with third party lenses

X-T4 vs Panasonic S1H w/ OIS lenses

  • on his scientific massage gun test, the X-T4 performed much better
  • on the massage gun, the X-T4 with 16-80 combo worked best
  • handheld, the 16-80/X-T4 combo did not work as efficiently as on the massage gun

X-T4 vs Panasonic S1H w/ prime lenses

  • the S1H is just better when it comes to IBIS only

Conclusions

  • Fuji’s DIS seems to work well only with Fujinon lenses
  • IBIS is better on X-T4 than X-H1
  • with OIS lenses, is better than X-H1
  • 16-80mmf/4 did way better than any other solution in the massage gun test (even better than S1H)
  • but handheld the 16-80mmf4, it didn’t seem to do as well, as if IBIS and OIS were competing a bit
  • IBIS does not replace a steady hand or a gimbal
