RUMOR: Bug Fix Firmware for Fujifilm X-Pro2 coming!

FW

According to a trusted source (thanks for sharing), Fujifilm will release a bug fix Firmware for the X-Pro2! This Firmware comes after FW 1.01, which fixed the Reset Issue.

What will it fix? It will probably fix black frame issue (Black Frames between shots in single shot mode) and maybe some other bugs (Full list of X-Pro2 Bugs here)

When will it come? I’m not sure yet. Maybe there will be a dedicated Firmware very soon or maybe it will be bundled with the EF-X500 or 2.0x Teleconverter support Firmware later on. The latter option could allow Fujifilm to “hide” the bug-fix behind a regular support Firmware.

Good to see Fujifilm fixing these bugs… so the Fujifilm X-T2 won’t have these issues at its launch.

Sony Sensor Factory will Resume Operations at the End of May :: Will this delay affect the release of the Fuji X-T2?

There is a further press release regarding the Kumamoto Sony sensor production facility that was hit by the earthquake earlier this month (via SonyAlphaRumors).

Sony says they will resume operations at the End of May.

As you know, Sony makes the APS-C sensors for Fujifilm. For now I still believe the X-T2 will be announced in late June / early July. However, we can’t exclude that it will be available on the market later than orignially planed.

Status of Sony Group Manufacturing Operations Affected by 2016 Kumamoto Earthquakes (Third Update)

Due to the earthquake of April 14, 2016 and subsequent earthquakes in the Kumamoto region, operations at Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation’s Kumamoto Technology Center (located in Kikuchi Gun, Kumamoto Prefecture), which is the primary manufacturing site of image sensors for digital cameras and security cameras as well as micro-display devices, were halted and currently remain suspended. With aftershocks continuing and employee safety the foremost priority, inspections of the facility and the development of a recovery plan remain ongoing. The current status of operations for the Kumamoto Technology Center is as follows:
  • Damage to the building itself has been confirmed to be primarily to the upper layer of the building, and reinforcement work will be carried out in this area.
  • The clean rooms used for wafer processing and manufacturing equipment, both located on the lower layer of the building have not been significantly damaged, and preparations are now underway to resume production. Manufacturing operations are targeted to resume around the end of May 2016.
  • Regarding back-end processes, such as assembly and measurement, as well as processing operations for components such as camera modules, which are carried out on the upper layer of the building, Sony has confirmed that there is damage to the clean rooms, manufacturing equipment and other equipment. Further analysis of the extent of this damage is currently underway.
  • Damage to finished product inventory such as image sensors at Kumamoto Technology Center is limited, and shipments of these products have already resumed. The status of semi-finished and uncompleted products is currently being confirmed.

The impact of the earthquakes on Sony Corporation’s (“Sony”) consolidated results continues to be evaluated. In the Devices segment, there is expected to be direct physical damage to Kumamoto Technology Center. Sony expects to incur expenses primarily for recovery and reinforcement work in response to the physical damage to the relevant portion of the Kumamoto Technology Center. Sony may also incur large opportunity losses, mainly in the Devices and Imaging Products & Solutions segments due to suspension of production for a certain period of time.

In addition, due to the suspension of manufacturing operations at Kumamoto Technology Center and potential disruption to the supply of components to Sony from certain third-party suppliers that also have manufacturing facilities in the Kumamoto region, it is possible that business operations within the Mobile Communications, Game & Network Services and Home Entertainment & Sound segments also may be affected. This potential impact is currently being evaluated.

Fujifilm currently focusing on development of compact WR lenses instead of XF33mmF1.0! Smart Move? Vote the POLL!

roadmap Rumor watermark2

Official Lens Roadmaps are something you should always take with a grain of salt. We have seem many times how Fuji can change specs of lenses as well as the expected release indicated on the roadmap anytime.

Moreover, as you have seen with the 2.0x Teleconverter, not every lens Fuji announces appeared previously in the roadmap (only in our rumored roadmap).

Roadmaps are never something definitive since Fuji changes its plans often… very often! But as far as I can, I’ll try to keep you updated with the latest plans.

XF33mmF1.0 Recap

One year ago, in April 2015, a New Source told us that Fujifilm is considering to produce a Super-Fast F1.0 lens around 30mm. At that time, the decision was not final, as a source told us in May 2015, who also confirmed it to be a 33mm lens. Finally, back in October 2015, another source told us that Fuji decided to go ahead and make it.

But in the past we have seen too many times Fujifilm scrapping plans on products that almost materialize, so take it with a grain of salt. In any case, I do not expect this lens to hit the market in 2016, read why here.

XF33mmF1.0 Vs. Compact WR lenses

Today I have an update for you.

I had a chat with a source (right in the past), who told me that Fuji is apparently not really in a hurry to make the XF33mmF1.0, because they consider it a priority to launch more compact and weather resistant versions of existing lenses (like the rumored soon to come XF23mmF2 – read more here). The very positive response of the X-shooter community to the XF35mmF2 might have helped Fuji to take this decision.

If true, would this be a good choice? What would you prefer Fuji to focus on first: more small compact Weather Resistant lenses (like the rumored XF23mmF2) or should the XF33mmF1.0 be the priority? Drop your vote in the Poll below… I’m sure Fujifilm Tokyo will be very interested in the results.

More details about Fuji’s latest rumored roadmap here.

Fujifilm Loves Our Polls? Then here are 2 more! :: X-Pro2 4K via Firmware update + ISO dial “T-camouflage solution”

Fuji POLL Empty

*Fujifilm Reads You!
Click HERE to see the original FujiRumors Poll, that Fujfiilm used in an official presentation to the Press

It’s no secret: Fujifilm loves our Polls and reads our comments.

This has been made possible thanks to you guys and your participation, which made this blog the by far biggest source of “online feedback” for Fujifilm.

X-series related Polls gather several thousands of votes within a few days (and hundreds of comments)… and if you keep it up, then we can be sure that they will continue to read us and maybe once again even display our Poll-Results at official press events.

Now, as you know, FujiRumors is a one man show that I run in my spare time. That’s why I rely on your help and support. So keep up sharing rumors and links to news, reviews, curiosities, deals and whatever you think should be featured on FR.

And sometimes FR-readers also suggest Polls in the comments and/or via email, which I’m happy to share whenever I can. And today, upon readers request, I’m going to share two more Polls:

Poll #1 – 4K via Firmware update: As you know, Fujifilm Managers said in several interviews, that the X-Pro2 is 4K capable (and the X-T2 will have 4K, as Fujifilm said here), but the problem with Fuji’s new flagship is that it overheats when filming in 4K.

The FujiRumors community asked me for a Poll regarding this, and I’m happy to share it:

Should Fujifilm bring 4K via Firmware to the X-Pro2?

Poll #2 – ISO-Dial: In our last Poll here, the result was pretty clear: most X-shooters want an ISO-dial. Many actually seem to get used quickly to the X-Pro2 ISO/Shutter dial, as Marin said here on facebook:

ISO

However, there is still a good number of X-shooters, who’d prefer to get rid of the dedicated ISO Dial. Couldn’t Fuji make everybody happy…. maybe with some sort of “T-camouflage solution“? Let me explain it.

On current X-series cameras, when you place the shutter dial to “T”, you can control the shutter speed with the front dial.

The ISO dial of the X-T1 and X-Pro2 have no “T-like” marking. But some FR-readers came up with alternative solutions. My favorite one? If you set the ISO-dial to “H2” (which I can’t remember ever having used, so it’s useless anyway, for me), you can adjust the ISO value with front or rear dial. And what if you’d like to shoot at ISO 25600 and jpeg only (because that’s what H2 means on the X-T1)? Set the ISO dial to H1 (ISO 12800) and select in the menu if you want to shoot at 12800 or 25600.

With this solution, H2 would basically work like the “T” on the shutter dial, and H1 gives you access to both extended ISO settings.

This is just one possible solution. Feel free to drop your ideas in the comment…. and here is the Poll

Should Fuji find a firmware solution to allow us to control ISO values with front/rear dial?

Sony A6300 Vs. Fuji X-Pro2 :: Should Fujifilm Fear Sony’s new APS-C flagship?

sony

Fujifilm X-Pro2
USA
: BHphoto / AmazonUS / Adorama / CANADA: AmazonCA / EUROPE: AmazonDE / AmazonUK / WexUK / PCHstore / AmazonITA / AmazonFR / AmazonESP /   AUSTRALIA: CameraPro

_ _ _

No Backlit sensor, not more than 24MP, and not even IBIS… no, it’s not the Fujifilm X-Pro2, but the long awaited successor of Sony’s best selling mirrorless camera (Sony A6000)… the Sony A6300!

Opinion Piece: I never hold an X-Pro2 or A6300 in my hands… and my local store is not the fastest to get new stuff

Evolution (no Revolution)

Don’t get me wrong: the Sony A6300 is a very nice camera (on paper… the look is… well, if you like it, it’s ok). No revolution over the A6000, but a nice evolution (just like the X-Pro2 is an evolution of the X-Pro1).

AutoFocus

The most noticable difference compared to the Sony A6000 is for sure the wide Phase Detection area that covers the entire sensor. This promises a great AF-performance (at least in good light conditions). And I’m sure it will perform great. Sony just makes great sensors… that’s why Fuji buys them from Sony ;) .

But here is the thing: I hear of a vastly improved Contrast (& Phase Detection) AF also on the X-Pro2. Sources confirm that the X-Pro2 can “see in the dark” and the first reviews seem to confirm what my sources say. Let’s see if the Sony A6300 can match (or even beat) this amazing Low Light Performance.

Also, with all these AF-points, the X-Pro2 joystick for quick AF-point selection is a very welcome addition… and this is missing on the A6300. Fast AF-point selection could be a rather cumbersome thing on the A6300. But as said… I never had the A6300 (or X-Pro2) in my hands, so I’ll wait go for my local dealer to have them at the store to compare them.

Image Quality

Regarding the Image Quality, I doubt the Sony A6300 will beat (or even equal) the X-TransIII X-Pro2 (focus-numerique tests say that the X-Pro2 X-TransIII is as good as Full Frame Sony A7II at ISO 6400). But we obviously have to wait for more A6300 reviews, before we can make any conclusions. Maybe it will even beat the X-Pro2… who knows. We need reviews, samples and comparisons. It’s too early now. For sure both cameras will deliver more or less great images, depending on the lens you attach on it.

Video

Videographers will for sure be happy about 4K, but probably even more about the S-Log in the A6300. And while eoshd says here, that the video quality of the Fujifilm X-Pro2 is “seriously impressive & enormously satisfying“, it has neither S-Log nor 4K. So if Video is your thing, the Sony A6300 wins hands down.

Lenses

Oh… and never forget, when we talk about Fujifilm, we always should keep in mind the great glass we X-shooters have. I don’t know if Sony’s APS-C lenses are on a par with Fuji’s lineup… for sure Sony’s glass is not superior, nor it has a wider range of available lenses. At the end of the story, everyone should just look at the lenses available for both systems, and decide which one fits better to his needs. So no winner here… even though I think that Fujinon glass is hard to beat.

Price

Now that’s the best argument to go for the Sony A6300 over the X-Pro2.

So what?

In my eyes and for my needs, the only advantage I see for the A6300 is AF… in theory. But if the X-Pro2 AF is really as good as all the reviewer (and my sources) say, then I can’t see myself ditching the great Fujinon Glass, the vintage design, the timeless “analog-alike” controls and Fuji’s Kaizen spirit for the Sony.

But I’m a fanboy.. so feel free to drop your thoughts in the comments down below. ;)

A New Hope: The retro-styled X-Pro2 kicks off Fujifilm’s next generation of enthusiast X-series cameras, based on a state-of-the-art 24.3 MP X-Trans sensor and a much more powerful processor. At first, everything seems strikingly familiar, but a closer look reveals that quite a lot has changed.

A Fujifilm X-Pro2 after a few days of light use

Four years after the introduction of the X-Pro1, Fujifilm is finally ready to open a new chapter in their book of mirrorless cameras. At first glance, the X-Pro2 looks just like its predecessor. However, it’s a different story on the inside (click here for full camera specs and here for more than 150 straight-out-of-camera and Lightroom CC RAW conversion sample images).

Fuji X-T2 coming in June (SRP) – POLL – Get the Fuji X-Pro2, wait for Fuji X-T2 or keep your current X- series camera?

 photo comparison_zpsqgtcwkhv.jpg

We have heard it previously from a New Source, but now a Source, who was right in the past, also says that the Fujifilm X-T2 announcement is scheduled for June. But the grain of salt is needed, since Fuji can change the date, just like they postponed the X-A1 announcement a few times, in order to sell more X-M1’s (reminder: the X-M1 was launched a few months before the X-A1)

Now, I guess I’m not the only one right now, who is thinking what to do (no, definitely not the only one)… buy the X-Pro2, wait for the X-T2, or just keep my X-T1?

I’m struggling with this questions. Sure, I’m aware that there is no right or wrong answer and everything is based on personal preferences and needs. But I’ve written a very personal list of considerations, why I’m right now tempted to buy the Fujifilm X-Pro2.

I’m looking forward to read your list in the comments, and you can also vote the Poll at the bottom of this post.

So let’s start:

First off, don’t get me wrong: I love my X-T1. I love the images, the look, the controls… but from what leaked so far, there are 10 main reasons why I’m considering to sell my X-T1, get an X-Pro2 and don’t wait for the X-T2.

My main 10 reason to sell my X-T1, get an X-Pro2 and don’t wait for the X-T2

1) More Phase Detection Pixels: this is what I want more than anything else.
2) The corner placement of the Viewfinder: right eye on the viewfinder, left eye free to see the scene… and also my nose will have more space ;)
3) 24MP X-Trans III sensor: unlock the Full Potential of the amazing Fujinon lenses with the new higher resolution sensor! And probably also more dynamic range, even better high ISO performance and more.
4) Lossless RAW compression
5) ACROS: New Film Simulations… I like them… the more, the merrier.
6) The X-T2 could come only in June (so say the rumors). Shipping maybe in July. It might be too late for my holidays. Also, I can’t see it having some spectacular improvements over the X-Pro2. Ok, the tilt screen, but no magical organic sensor or whatsoever. (Note: this is my personal guess, not an “offical” rumor)
7) X-Processor: the faster, the better
8) The Hybrid Viewfinder with ERF technology
9) No more flimsy Accessory Door: I’ve written about it here. No need to add anything else. Fuji must have fixed this with the X-Pro2.
10) Improved Noise Reduction: Sounds like no more waxy Skin Tones at High ISO (in JPEG) to me. Again, all I had to say is written here. With the X-Pro2 and the improved Noise Reduction, I might keep even more JPEG’s than I already do.

Sure, the X-Pro2 also has the 1/8000 mechanical shutter, the Dual SD-card slot, the Grain Effect, Pixel Mapping and a lot more. And I’m sure many of you would put some of them in their own top 10 list. But as said, no right or wrong. Just a matter of personal preferences.

My main 3 reason to wait for X-T2

1) Price: The X-T2 will maybe be cheaper than the X-Pro2 (again, not and “official” rumor, just my very personal guess). And looking at my bank account, this is the main reason for me not to get the X-Pro2 and to wait for the X-T2 (and no, I don’t get a single cent discount from Fujifilm on my Fuji gear… and as a teacher, not even tax deduction on cameras)
2) Big EVF: I like the super-size EVF of the X-T line. But on the other hand, with the X-Pro2, I get the hybrid viewfinder, which will make me happy.
3) Tilt screen: I use the viewfinder almost all the time. But there are certain circumstances where I like the tilt screen. So I’d miss that on the X-Pro2, but it’s no deal breaker for me.

Main reason to keep the X-T1

1) The X-T1 already takes such great picture
2) Comes for free, since I already have it ;)

AmazonUS: “Fujifilm Instax Film is Best Selling Photo Product of this Holiday Season!”

AmazonUS says it lound and clear: The best selling Photo Prouct of this Holiday Season is the Fujfilm Instax Film!

And believe it or not, this kind of news is very important also for the X-series, because the terrific earnings Fujfilm makes with Instax Cameras are fueling the development costs of the X cameras!

That’s why Fuji keeps up releasing new Instax models, from the brand new Selfie Instax Mini 70 to the Instax Wide 300 and the Fujifilm Instax Mini 90 Neo Classic, or even the Instax Mini “Hello Kitty”. And of course the Instax SHARE Smartphone Printer SP-1.
