Fujifilm GFX100II with 3-Way Tilt Screen

When we shared the rumor that the Fujifilm GFX100II would accept the cooling fan (which we confirm), I noticed people saying in the comments that this obviously means the GFX100II will have a fully articulating screen, just like every other cameras that is currently compatible with that fan.

But sometimes, what we think is so obvious, is wrong anyway ;).

Because we have been told the Fujifilm GFX100II will have a 3 way tilt screen.

Fujifilm to Launch New Film Simulation on September 12

Usually it goes like this.

Fujifilm launches a new sensor/processor platform and gives us a new film simulation along with it.

But that did not happen with the launch of the Fujifilm X-H2S back in May 2022, and also not with all the other 5th generation gear that followed (X-H2, X-T5, X-S20).

That sucked, and I started moaning about it after the last X summit in May 2023.

But things are finally going to change on September 12.

According to our trusted sources, Fujifilm will launch a new film simulation on September 12.

LEAKED: This is the New Sensor of the Fujifilm GFX100 Successor

Finally we can share the final detail about the Fujifilm GFX100 successor sensor.

According to trusted sources, the Fujifilm GFX100 successor will sport a new 100 megapixel sensor based on the sensor architecture of the Sony A6700 and Sony FX30.

So still 100 megapixel BSI (not stacked), but optimized for faster sensor readout compared to the current 100MP sensor in use on the GFX100/S as well as in its APS-C format on the Fujifilm X-T3, X-T4, X-S20 etc.

We will have to see what benefit this sensor brings in real life, but on paper (and from what we can see on the Sony A6700), the faster sensor readout leads to less rolling shutter especially in video, allows for faster processing of files and potentially just speeds up the camera overall in terms of autofocus, EVF blackout and more.

The perfect solution to speed up the GFX system without going the super expensive stacked sensor route.

EISA Photography Awards: Fujifilm X-H2 best APS-C Camera

Only the best paying brands can let their products go through the brutally tough testing of the EISA team and cream off an award.

Luckily Fujifilm survived the brutal selection and got an award for the Fujifilm X-H2 as best APS-C camera.

Despite never touching the camera, the illuminated EISA team declared this:

The Fujifilm X-H2 is a true hybrid camera with extensive video capabilities that offers the highest resolution available in the APS-C sensor format. Its 40-million-pixel X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor produces still images full of detail, and it can create 160MP files using its Pixel Shift Multi Shot Mode. It can also record 8K/30p video in 4:2:2 10-bit colour and supports both Apple ProRes and BlackMagic Raw output over HDMI. The X-Processor 5 enables subject-detection autofocus which recognises and tracks a broad range of subjects, while the 5-axis in-body image-stabilisation system offers up to 7 stops of compensation.

This excellent summary proves that the EISA team can read the specs sheets. A specs sheet so beautiful, that EISA decided to create a category to award this camera.

Fujifilm will now pay lots of money for the right of using the EISA-bragging logo on their various photography fairs, which shows how healthy of a company Fujifilm is since they can waste money on such things.

Sadly no award for Pentax. They are either too broke to pay for it, or they are just smarter than any other company. And given that they’ve launched this very successful camera, I’d lean towards the second option (that’s the only non sarcastic sentence in this article btw).

Fujifilm has officially announced the next Fujifilm X Summit for September 12, which is old news for FujiRumors readers because thanks to our sources we told you the date already in early July here.

Also in early July we told you what will come.

Here is what is said in the video:

  • GFX challenge Grant Program updates (15 winners)

Fujifilm Financial Results for Q1 FY2023: Brisk Sales for X-T5, X-H2, X-H2S and Instax

Fujifilm has announced the financial results for the first quarter of the fiscal year 2023 (April to June).

Good news for Instax (as to expect) and for the 5th generation X series gear.

  • Revenue from digital cameras increased significantly, mainly due to solid sales of X-H2, X-H2S and X-T5, which were released in FY2022.
  • We will continue to offer attractive products by achieving overwhelmingly high image quality with the large format in the GFX series and the best balance between image quality and size in the X series

Manager Interview

David Etchells, formerly at Imaging Resource, and always highly respected for his deep technical knowledge, has now shared his talk with Fujifilm managers at the CP+ earlier this year.

As usual, David knows how to dig deep into technical details and make the right questions.

Here on FujiRumors we will provide just a short summary in bullet points for those of you who are in a hurry and want to give it a quick glance. But for the full talk you have to check out the very interesting article at petapixel.

Deep-learning based AF tracking system

  • it’s an enormous task to develop it. Tens of thousands of photos of an intended subject must be manually processed by humans
  • Fujifilm has to constantly add new elements to the training database to improve AF tracking
  • X-H2S firmware 3.0 improved mainly
    – AF tracking with fast moving subjects
    – increased the AF frequency during continuous shooting by making the algorithm more efficient and processing faster (double the AF processing speed of previous firmware)
  • they talk how certain AF improvements might come to X-T5 and X-H2 at some point – which then happened on May 24
  • Fujifilm might be the first manufacturer, who, with their latest firmware, now tightly couples AI subject recognition with conventional phase-detect-based AF tracking. David says that this is significant because AI subject recognition and conventional AF tracking are two fundamentally different processes. Getting the two to work together in close coordination is a big breakthrough.

Fujifilm X-T5: The Issue with Focus Peaking

I have received a message via the revived anonymous contact form by FujiRumors Boris, pointing me out towards an issue with the focus peaking on the Fujifilm X-T5.

Here is the issue:

When you use manual focus and a manual lens on other Fuji cameras and have some kind of focus help like peaking activated, it will show you the highlighted areas but once you half press the shutter, the focus help goes away and you see the pure image, which is very helpful for composition.

On the X-T5 that sadly doesn’t happen anymore and focus peaking stays on screen all the time and you can’t view your actual image. In some situations that doesn’t make a big difference, but when you for example take a photo in the forest or in busy environments, the entire screen is yellow, or red etc. and you basically have no idea what you are shooting.

And you also can‘t put focus peaking on a function button to quickly turn it off. In other words, manual focusing on the XT-5 became very unpractical for no reason.

I don’t know if that’s like this for all 5th generation Fujifilm cameras (X-H2, X-H2S, X-S20 and X-T5). Please let us know in the comments.

My take?

Well, having focus peaking ON all the time, even when the shutter button is half pressed, could actually make sense for example in macro when an insect for example is slightly moving and you want to make a quick adjustment before fully pressing the button. Or when you shoot handheld macro and you want to have the possibility to make quick micro-adjustment at any time, even with the shutter button half pressed.

However, I can also understand if you want to get the focus assistance out of the way once you half press the button to have a clean view over your composition (for example in landscape photography on a tripod).

The solution is simple: Fujifilm should give us the option to pick whatever solution we prefer.
