TIPA AWARDS :: Triple Win for Fujifilm (X-Pro2, X-T10 and XF100-400)

Triple win for Fujifilm at the TIPA Award 2016

1. TIPA BEST MIRRORLESS CSC EXPERT Award – The “FUJIFILM X-Pro2” Mirrorless Digital Camera – READ MORE
2. TIPA BEST MIRRORLESS CSC ENTRY LEVEL Award – The “FUJIFILM X-T10” Mirrorless Digital Camera – READ MORE
3. TIPA BEST CSC TELEPHOTO ZOOM LENS Award – The “FUJINON XF100-400mmF4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR” X Mount Interchangeable lens – READ MORE

The awards for Fujifilm are for sure deserved! But, as often with such awards, there are so many categories that it’s quite easy for every manufacturer to win an award.

For example, the X-Pro2 wins as best CSC Expert camera, but the SonyA7rII is the best professional CSC camera, while the Olympus E-M10 Mark II is the the best Advanced camera. I don’t really understand what’s the difference between Expert, Advanced and Professional. But more categories make more manufacturers happy.

NOTE: Next Year Fujifilm will win the Best Medium Format Camera (this year the award goes to the Phase One XF 100MP).

Fujifilm Loves Our Polls? Then here are 2 more! :: X-Pro2 4K via Firmware update + ISO dial “T-camouflage solution”

Fuji POLL Empty

*Fujifilm Reads You!
Click HERE to see the original FujiRumors Poll, that Fujfiilm used in an official presentation to the Press

It’s no secret: Fujifilm loves our Polls and reads our comments.

This has been made possible thanks to you guys and your participation, which made this blog the by far biggest source of “online feedback” for Fujifilm.

X-series related Polls gather several thousands of votes within a few days (and hundreds of comments)… and if you keep it up, then we can be sure that they will continue to read us and maybe once again even display our Poll-Results at official press events.

Now, as you know, FujiRumors is a one man show that I run in my spare time. That’s why I rely on your help and support. So keep up sharing rumors and links to news, reviews, curiosities, deals and whatever you think should be featured on FR.

And sometimes FR-readers also suggest Polls in the comments and/or via email, which I’m happy to share whenever I can. And today, upon readers request, I’m going to share two more Polls:

Poll #1 – 4K via Firmware update: As you know, Fujifilm Managers said in several interviews, that the X-Pro2 is 4K capable (and the X-T2 will have 4K, as Fujifilm said here), but the problem with Fuji’s new flagship is that it overheats when filming in 4K.

The FujiRumors community asked me for a Poll regarding this, and I’m happy to share it:

Should Fujifilm bring 4K via Firmware to the X-Pro2?

Poll #2 – ISO-Dial: In our last Poll here, the result was pretty clear: most X-shooters want an ISO-dial. Many actually seem to get used quickly to the X-Pro2 ISO/Shutter dial, as Marin said here on facebook:

ISO

However, there is still a good number of X-shooters, who’d prefer to get rid of the dedicated ISO Dial. Couldn’t Fuji make everybody happy…. maybe with some sort of “T-camouflage solution“? Let me explain it.

On current X-series cameras, when you place the shutter dial to “T”, you can control the shutter speed with the front dial.

The ISO dial of the X-T1 and X-Pro2 have no “T-like” marking. But some FR-readers came up with alternative solutions. My favorite one? If you set the ISO-dial to “H2” (which I can’t remember ever having used, so it’s useless anyway, for me), you can adjust the ISO value with front or rear dial. And what if you’d like to shoot at ISO 25600 and jpeg only (because that’s what H2 means on the X-T1)? Set the ISO dial to H1 (ISO 12800) and select in the menu if you want to shoot at 12800 or 25600.

With this solution, H2 would basically work like the “T” on the shutter dial, and H1 gives you access to both extended ISO settings.

This is just one possible solution. Feel free to drop your ideas in the comment…. and here is the Poll

Should Fuji find a firmware solution to allow us to control ISO values with front/rear dial?

Kai (DigitalRev) Fujifilm X-Pro2 Hands-on Review: “This is the X-camera to go for!”

Fujifilm X-Pro2

Kai (digitalrev) shared his X-Pro2 hands on review here. “Vastly Improved over X-Pro1. Still so cool. Glorious Hybrid Viewfinder. Images do look gorgeous in color and black & white. Better AF than X-T1 [but the Pro photographer, whom Kai talks with says it’s still no DSLR killer]. ISO dial is rubbish. There is a lot to like about the X-Pro2. This is the X-camera to go for.”

The “Leica-Killer” Fuji X-Pro2: “Nearly the FIRST EVER ergonomically Perfect Camera, Except For…”? – With POLL

“Leica-Killer” X-Pro2… the Almost Perfect Camera

eoshd is very pleased by the stills & video performance of the X-Pro2. He really loves it and says that he has “never enjoyed a camera more on a combined video and stills shoot than I have the X Pro2.

Great images, great shooting experience, logical control layout & great menu. He calls it even a “Leica-Killer”,  because it’s cheaper, lighter, faster “but just as nice to shoot with as the legendary rangefinder in terms of feel and optics. It’s even pretty close for build quality considering the gap, no, gulf in price.”

But we have already read so many good things about the X-Pro2, so let’s focus on the biggest complaints this time.

  1. “4K: The inglorious own goal however is that even though by their own admission the Fuji X Pro2 is fully equipped for 4K video, Fuji admit that due to ‘only’ 20% of their users wanting it, they have disabled it in firmware. UTTER stupidity. 20%!! Why potentially flush even 0.01% of your sales down the toilet for the sake of firmware? Are they seriously expecting ALL video users to get the X-T2 instead? Why not let us have the choice of body? […] If they don’t re-enable 4K in firmware on this camera and reserve it as an X-T2-only feature, they’re making an enormous mistake.”
  2. The X Pro2 is nearly the FIRST EVER perfect digital camera ergonomically for photography, but for one disturbing blunder… The combined shutter and ISO dial is horrendous!”

The ISO Dial

Ok, so let’s talk about the ISO dial… loved by some, hated by others.

As you can read at fujifilm-x, Fujifilm decided to go for the ISO-dial because it looks so retro and it’s practical:

the practical operation is about being able to manipulate the 4 elements [ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture, Exposure] with precision. […] when the X-T1, a camera that had a dedicated ISO dial, was announced, then people quickly realized the significance. We started getting request to “Add the ISO dial to the next X-Pro model!”

Fujifilm tested different dials. At the end they went for the ISO/Shutter combined dial, a technically rather complicated solution.

Why do we spend so much time on this one dial? Unfortunately there is no economic and rational answer to that question. But it was something that the developing team of X-Pro camera had always dreamed of achieving. And it was also something that the passionate X-Pro users strongly wished for.”

But it’s exactly this dial, that eoshd calls “horrendous“. From what I could read so far, some love the dial, other find it cool but not practical, while other would prefer not to have it at all. So I thought it’s time for a Poll.

When developing the X-Pro2, Fujifilm considered at least 3 ISO-dial options: the “Shutter/ISO” combination, the “Sub LCD” ISO dial and the “Exposure & ISO” dial. I’ll share a pic of each solution down below (via fujifilm-x). Check them out and then Vote your favorite option:

Fuji Vs. Fuji :: The Film Simulation (R)-Evolution :: All FS Improved :: See Conventional Velvia Vs. X-Pro2 Velvia!

The New Film Simulation ACROS, introduced with the Fuji X-Pro2, was a full success. Photographers love it and some call it even “a game changer”. But that’s not all.

As we know since this Fuji Manager interview here, Fujifilm also tweaked all the other film simulations. The capabilities of the new X-Pro2 sensor/processor combo allowed Fuji to evolve and improve every film simulation, and in particular Velvia, as you can see from the sample shared above.

Here is the more technical explanation:

That vivid Velvia color is still maintained, but the change in color is more expressive with the new algorithm. You can say that it has more “depth”.

The image designing and its algorithm for the X-Pro2 use a new method for converting the raw signals. To create an image, it picks up signals that were not previously picked up. The camera got “better” at extracting information from the raw signals.  So as a result, it can express more detail without supersaturation. It extracts only the needed elements for the “human eye” and “photograph” so it doesn’t affect the image quality.

But we need to balance out the image processing and the processor capability. We wanted to do the same processing for X-T1 and X-Pro1, but the algorithm was too complex that the previous processor was not powerful enough. We could not implement the image processing up until now.

Maybe we could have installed it. But that would be with the compromise on the unrealistic processing time. You would have to wait several seconds before you can take another. Another compromise would be that the images are no longer “What you see is what you get”. Either way, we would not allow such camera.

You can read more about it at fujifilm-x
