RUMOR: Fujifilm GFX100 Replacement is Next GFX Camera coming in 2023 (Trusted Source)

The Rumor

Many asked me if a new Fujifilm GFX camera would come in 2023.

Well, yes, definitely!

In fact, trusted sources (THANKS) told us that the next Fujifilm GFX camera to come will be the replacement to the Fujifilm GFX100.

So, not the replacement to GFX100S, or the GFX50R or anything else. What we will get is the successor to the Fujifilm GFX100.

That’s 100% sure and solid!

You know I’d never trick you with fake rumors to make traffic. I simply respect you guys too much to do that.

The GFX100

The Fujifilm GFX100 was launched back in 2019 and it was definitely revolutionary for its time, with a backside illuminated 102 megapixel sensor and IBIS, giving medium format speed and flexibility unseen until then in the digital medium format world.

I did go hands on with the Fujifilm GFX100, but these are the three main reasons I did not buy it:

  1. too expensive
  2. too big
  3. I didn’t find it intuitive to use. I much prefer Fujifilm cameras with dedicated dials or at least dedicated PSAM dial.

Fujifilm fixed all these three issues two years later with the Fujifilm GFX100S, a camera that I now own and enjoy using especially for landscape photography but also to document family life.

Personally I’d have looked more forward to a Fujifilm GFX100S with 5th generation goodness or a GFX100R. But I know also the Fujifilm GFX100 has its loyal fellowship and I am working on all the details.

So definitely stay tuned on FujiRumors if you want to know more about it.

Panasonic Says their Organic Sensor is Close to Practical Use

Panasonic has now stated that their organic sensor is close to practical use and that they expect to use it in commercial devices “in a few years“.

In a few years” might not sound that close for many of us, but considering that the announcement of the organic sensor development was made 10 years ago, being let’s say 2 or 3 years away from the finish line can be indeed perceived as “close” for engineers working on it for so long.

Also other companies work on the organic sensor (for example Samsung), but Panasonic says they lack behind in the development and Panasonic is leading in this case.

Back in June 2013 Panasonic and Fujifilm announced that they are developing the organic sensor together. The last time we heard of Fujifilm being still involved in the development was back in October 2018.

At this point, in 2023, I don’t know if Fujifilm is still involved or not.

Panasonic Announces Development of Organic CMOS Sensor that Realizes Good Color Reproduction under all Kinds of Light

Myth of the Organic Sensor

10 year after the joint Panasonic and Fujifilm announcement, where the organic sensor was first unveiled to the masses with great optimism and claims of glorious performances and dynamic range, we haven’t seen anything coming to the market, expect for a camcorder prototype shown by Panasonic back in 2019.

The last update we got was back in October 2021, when Panasonic unveiled a 35MP organic Super35 CMOS sensor with global shutter.

Well, today we got another update from Panasonic, where they announced the “development of organic CMOS image sensor technology that realizes good color reproduction even under all kinds of light sources“. You can read the full press release below.

Is Fujifilm Still Involved?

Unlike the first announcement in 2013, that was made by Panasonic and Fujifilm together, this time it’s only Panasonic, who released a press release regarding the organic sensor development.

So the question I guess is if Fujifilm has pulled out of the organic sensor development.

The last statement in this regard comes from Panasonic, who in October 2018 said they are still working on it with Fujifilm.

So at least until 2018, Fujifilm and Panasonic did work on it together, but I don’t know if that’s the case still today. I will try to figure that out and in case let you know.

These Specs Make the Fujifilm X-T5 Great for Landscape Photography

Tips for Landscape Photography, Using the Fujifilm X-T5

 by Reza Malayeri

Full disclosure: This article was brought to you by Adorama. Adorama did not pay FujiRumors to publish this article. But, as usual on FR, this article contains affiliate links.

The Fujifilm X-T5 is the culmination of five generations of evolution in Fuji’s X-Series lineup of mirrorless cameras. Released in November 2022 — nearly a decade after the release of the original X-T1 — the X-T5 features a revolutionary 40-megapixel X-Trans 5 HR sensor, X-Processor 5 AI image processing, and a more compact version of the beloved classic X-Series camera body. This makes it an optimal choice for landscape photography.

Weighing in at just 557 grams, the Fujifilm X-T5 is a lightweight powerhouse. The combination of the smaller size, weight, and high resolution 40-megapixel sensor is a joy to use and travel with. I’ve been enjoying the convenience of shooting landscape photography with such a compact setup. I can pack the X-T5 and several Fujifilm lenses into a small backpack to create stunning high-resolution images.

Higher Resolution and Increased Dynamic Range

Fujifilm has included several improvements to the X-T5 which make it an amazing camera for landscape photography. The all-new 5th generation X-Trans 5 HR CMOS sensor features an enhanced image processing algorithm that boosts resolution, without compromising signal to noise ratio. In addition to its enhanced image processing algorithm, the X-T5 also features an improved pixel structure, which allows light to be captured more efficiently. This also enables a lower base ISO value of 125. The combination of these two technologies offers increased dynamic range and higher resolution, both of which are highly desired features for landscape photographers.

Fujifilm GFX100 Discontinued at Some Stores in Japan

Fujifilm GFX100 Discontinued

In Japan, the first stores are marking the Fujifilm GFX100 as discontinued, as reported by the Japanese website asobinet.

The Fujifilm GFX100 was launched back in 2019 and it was definitely revolutionary for its time, with a backside illuminated 102 megapixel sensor and IBIS, giving medium format speed and flexibility unseen until then in the digital medium format world.

But then…

… on January 27, 2021

… just one day after the birth of my son

… Fujifilm launched the glorious Fujifilm GFX100S: much smaller, much cheaper, much better ergonomics (in my opinion) than the GFX100.

The GFX100S was pretty much superior under every aspect to the GFX100, so much so that Fujifilm USA launched arguably their all time best advertising about the GFX100S with the subtle admission that there is almost not point in buying the GFX100 anymore (in addition to give FujiRumors a shout-out ;))

Sales for the Fujifilm GFX100 plummeted after the GFX100S announcement and since 2+ years it hardly sells anymore.

Miraculously, though, Fujifilm still kept producing it (albeit in very limited numbers) and in fact you can find it still in stock pretty much everywhere in USA and Europe. But it seems that this is going to change soon, as Japanese stores are starting to inform their customers that there won’t be any new shipments for this camera.

DPRTV Declares Fujifilm GFX100S Best Camera for Landscape Photography

Which are the best cameras for landscape photography?

DPRTV looks at three different price points and makes its recommendations.

There is also a Fujifilm camera among the winners, the Fujifilm GFX100S, in the “money is no object” category.

DPRTV says:

There is no disputing that the Fujifilm GFX medium format cameras are the best option for landscape. Our choice is the Fujifilm GFX100S. What is not to love: you get that amazing 100MP sensor clearly well suited for landscape photography. We also prefer the GFX100S body over the GFX100 because it is more compact. You get nice ergonomics. The Fuji style tilt screen is certainly nice for landscape when you are at awkward angles and it is just easier to travel with.

Fujifilm also has an excellent line of lenses, including the GF20-35mmF4, which is very rare in medium format to have an ultra wide range like that and it’s also a very sharp lens.

It has IBIS and it’s very effective.

If you need more megapixel, you can shoot in multi-shot and get 400MP images.

There is simply no better pick for landscape photography than the Fujifilm GFX100S, if money is no object.

Fujifilm X-Lab X-T5 Edition – Making the Fujifilm X-T5

Fujifilm managers and engineers sat down together to give us insights on the Fujifilm X-T5 development.

Nothing revolutionary is said, but I grab the occasion to make a recommendation to Fujifilm: please give us an English translated version of your X lab episodes, as using the automatic live google translation is a real pain.

It should not break your bank to do that, dear Fujifilm.

Dear FUJIFILM, We Decided: Make These 6 X-Mount Lenses Next!

It’s pure sadness.

I mean, if you look at the current X mount lens roadmap, it is just sadness, with only one X mount lens stoically standing all alone trying to keep up excited about the future.

So we decided to help Fujifilm in gathering some ideas, and you guys dropped hundreds of lens suggestions for the future here, which I then summed up in 40 options to vote on here.

Well, here are the results:

TOP 6 LENSES OVERALL:

  1. XF 23mm f/2 Pancake (fan made rendering here)
  2. XF 16-55mm f/2.8 MK II
  3. XF 18mm f/2 MK II
  4. XF 12mm f/1.4
  5. XF 16-35mm f/2
  6. XF 11-30mm f/2.8

There were really a lot of suggestions in the wide angle zoom range. So many, that I decided to give 2 options to vote on, the XF16-35mm f/2 and the XF 11-30mm f/2.8.

But if we were to merger even those two lenses into one single lens, we could get something like the XF 14-30mm f/2.0. In that case, we would have the following result.

  1. XF 14-30mm f/2.0
  2. XF 23mm f/2 Pancake (fan made rendering here)
  3. XF 16-55mm f/2.8 MK II
  4. XF 18mm f/2 MK II
  5. XF 12mm f/1.4
  6. XF 70mm f/2 (fan made rendering here)

TOP 6 PRIMES:

  1. XF 23mm f/2 Pancake
  2. XF 18mm f/2 MK II
  3. XF 12mm f/1.4
  4. XF 70mm f/2
  5. XF 10mm f/2
  6. XF 35mm f/1.2

TOP 6 ZOOMS:

  1. XF 16-55mm f/2.8 MK II
  2. XF 16-35mm f/2
  3. XF 11-30mm f/2.8
  4. XF 16-70mm f/2.8-4
  5. XF 16-135mm f/4
  6. XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 MK II

And if we were to merge the two lenses as we did above, we would get:

  1. XF 14-30mm f/2.0
  2. XF 16-55mm f/2.8 MK II
  3. XF 16-70mm f/2.8-4
  4. XF 16-135mm f/4
  5. XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 MK II
  6. XF 23-55mm f/2

CONCLUSIONS
Wide Angle Reality vs Telephoto Dreams

When you go around in forums, you’ll often see people complaining about Fujifilm not offering enough long lenses.

And to a certain degree I agree with you: long primes especially are needed!

But then there is the reality.

And the reality is that the vast majority of Fujifilm shooters simply do not see long lenses as a priority. What they really want is the total opposite: more wide angle zooms and primes.

We have to be clear about this: any of the lenses that made it to the top of the list in our survey would outsell by a large margin any long prime or zoom lens Fuji would launch.

That’s something Fujifilm knows (and has openly declared here).

And yet, there is at least one lens I feel Fujifilm must give us: the (already patented) Fujinon XF 400mm f/4, which made it in the top 15 of our list and fellow FR-readers already made mock-ups of and it is consistently your top wished telephoto lens.

So, even though it did not make the list, I strongly advice Fujifilm to give us a long prime lens.

Fujifilm X-T5, X-H2 and X-H2s – The Higher End Trinity Review Roundup

Here is a roundup of the three newest higher end Fujifilm cameras: the Fujifilm X-T5, Fujifilm X-H2 and Fujifilm X-H2s.

And yes, it is true that the Fujifilm X-T5 is nor marketed as “high end”. But unless you need long bursts with deep buffer or the highest possible video power, then the Fujifilm X-T5 is just right up there in performance with those other guys.

So, enjoy the roundup.
