You might remember dc.home forum member joofei, who shared a bunch of wild rumors about Fuji’s upcoming gear at the Chinese forum (see wild rumors 1and wild rumors 2).
Well, he just shared some new information here at dc.home. Some sound very weird… but I’ll just report them here and leave any considerations to you.
Joofei says that there could be 2 versions of the X-PRO2.
VERSION 1: This version matches exactly with the rumors shared here on FR over the last months: APS-C sensor, 24MP, Dual Card slot… so nothing new.
VERSION 2: The second X-PRO2 version will have, according to joofei, the following specs:
– 25.6 x 17.3 APS-X sensor
– 25-27 MP
– OLD LENS WITH 1.x FACTOR [admin: if I understand the google translated version correctly, all current XF lenses will be compatible with this new sensor]
– BIG OVF + EVF
I have no rumors about an X-PRO2 with a completely new 25.6 x 17.3 APS-X sensor format (that’s between APS-H with 27.9×18.6 and APS-C with 23.6×15.6). For now I give to this rumor a very low rating. I’ll just note that, if you look closely at the April’s Fool Joke made up by an official Fujifilm X-photographer here, you’ll see that some of his “fake” features match with those of joofei. Here are the X-photographer specs:
– Sensor 10% bigger than the previous one, so that you can use the “old” lenses, with a crop factor of 1.2x [admin: FR-reader David calculated a drop factor of 1.4]
– 27 MP
– Hybrid viewfinder (as X100T, but with X-T1 dimensions)
As the X-photographer himself said in the comments about his joke: “Who knows how many of these features will be in the next Fuji?”
Now, either both are just having fun and posted similar fake specs, or there is something worth to investigate behind these very wild rumors.
Let’s start this week with a very fresh rumor brought to you by our top trusted Japanese source, who dropped me an email a few hours ago, with a rumor that I guess will make some X-shooters out there pretty happy.
The source says, that the Fujifilm X-PRO2 will have a mechanical shutter (MS) speed that goes up to 1/8000 of a second.
That’s it…. now feel free to spread the word… and if possible quote FR as the original source ;) .
And here is the updated X-PRO2 specs list.
(TS= trusted source / NeS =New Source / AS = Anonymous Source / SRP = source who was right in the past / OS = other sites)
– APS-C sensor (TS + AS + AS)
– 24MP sensor (AS) – More than 16MP (AS)
– 1/8000 of a second mechanical shutter speed (TS)
– dual SD card slot (NeS)
– coming late 2015 (TS + AS)
– coming September / October (OS + OS)
– tilt screen (AS)
– WiFi (AS)
– Non organic ASP-C X-Trans sensor (OS)
– Price about 20% to 30% more expensive than the X-T1 (AS)
– 4K video (TS + NeS)
– Faster Processor EXR III (TS)
– smaller than X-PRO1 (OS)
– Sync Speed faster than 1/180th
Earlier today I posted an April’s fool Trick about a leaked image of a prototype X-PRO2. The guys behind this funny joke told me yesterday that they’d appreciate the support of FujiHumors… and I didn’t want to be the spoilsport ;).
But now let’s go back to FujiRumors… and this time it’s about the X-PRO2 release. We now have 2 more confirmations that the X-PRO2 will probably come in late 2015 (September or October).
SEPTEMBER: According to Tom Grill (aboutphotography-tomgrill) the X-PRO2 could be released in September. In an article written on March 23, he says:
“The impetus for this post came because I heard last week that the X-Pro1 would be replaced by a newer X-Pro2, probably in September of this year.”
OCTOBER: DicaHub spotted (on March 31) a slightly different release date. It was shared by SLRClub user Daniel SON. Here is the translated text:
“I’m not a user of Fujifilm digital camera. I have a job related photography and am working in U.S.A. For this time when I visited WPPI at Las Vegas, I heard this from Fujifilm booth. Because I was considering to use Fujifilm cameras for shooting, I had tested X-Pro1 and X-T1 at Fujifilm booth and talked with Fujjifilm rep. He said X-T1, recently launched, might be better than X-Pro1 in overall performance and new model in X-Pro1 line is ready to be launced about Oct. of this year. Because he is staff of Fujifilm, might his words be sure? I bring this information because I think there might be someone to get information.”
There is light at the end of the tunnel… and I can see the contours of the Fujifilm X-PRO2… under my X-mas tree … let’s hope … ;)
UDPATE: THE TRUTH: It’s an April’s fool Trick. The guys behind this funny joke told me yesterday that they’d appreciate the support of FujiHumors… and I hate to be the spoilsport ;) .
“A friend of mine (we will call him Mr. Ma Ni), from Japan, sent me this stolen picture of the new Fuji X-Pro2. The quality is not good, but it looks to be a working prototype.
Some specifications he say could be true, he received from a man at Fujifilm:
4k Video
Sensor 10% bigger than the previous one, so that you can use the “old” lenses, with a crop factor of 1.2x
Processor EXR IV
Dual Sd
27 Mpx
Magnesium and anticorodal alloy
Hibryd viewfinder (as X100T, but with X-T1 dimensions)
LCD that twist & tilt
Radio TTL control of Fuji, Profoto and Nicephoto flash
Radio (manual) control of Nikon and Canon speedlights, with an optional adapter
Customizable versions they called “Sakana” with lizard, iguana and shark skin.
Chanel Limited Edition: shark skin white colored with black details, in a limited edition of 31 pieces, as the first Chanel boutique, in Paris, Rue Cambon 31.
We could call it also HVF vs EVF or Rangefinder vs DSLR style: it’s the decision between the Fujifilm X-PRO2 and Fuji X-T2.
SAME SAME …
Now, in order to be able to answer today’s poll, we will assume that the Fuji X-T2 will have the same specs (*), as the rumoredX-PRO2 specs: 24MP X-Trans sensor, EXR III processor, same AF-performance, tilt screen, 4K…
… BUT DIFFERENT
The main differences between the Fuji X-T2 and Fujifilm X-PRO2 would remain the HVF vs EVF, Rangefinder vs DSLR-style and some controls/ergonomics (like no ISO-dial on the X-PRO2, better grip on the X-T2 etc.)… and the price, of course. Due the Hybrid Viewfinder, I think it’s reasonable to assume that the Fuji X-PRO2 will be more expensive than the Fuji X-T2.
So here it is, the battel of Fuji’s future flagship cameras… and I’m really curious to see which one you’d pick up between X-PRO2 and X-T2. Personally I have a preference, but I’ll drop it down later in the comments ;)

Time for another series of interviews with Fujifilm Managers… let’s start with the main points in the one imaging-resource had with Makoto Oishi from the Sales & Marketing Division, Optical Device & Electronic Imaging Products Division.
4K:”Currently, our X-Trans CMOS II [sensor] cannot realize 4K videos because it has a smaller number of pixels, like 16-megapixel. Also, if we [want to] realize 4K video, the sensor itself should have much faster reading speed.”
X100S firmware: “While we have provided firmware upgrades for the X100S many times, now we have the X100T, we’re finished, no firmware upgrades [for the X100S] anymore.”
Frankly disappointing, if true. I can understand that they hold on with the FW release, since the X100T is relatively new, and a new X100S firmware would probably influence negatively the sales… but on the long term Fuji must update the X100S. X100S owners are a VERY important part for Fuji’s success, so they deserve an update. At least Classic Chrome… David Hobby himself said here to have used it on his X100S… so why not all the other X-shooters too?
X-PRO2: “But if we launched an X-Pro, we’d need more new technologies, and we’re still developing and investigating. Especially the new devices like the processor or sensor, we’re still preparing.”
There is more to read at imaging-resource, for example about the gyro sensor used for the OIS in the 50-140. A technology missing in the 16-55… and in another interview at fujifilm-blog another manager (Mr Soga, the man responsible for the lens roadmap) explains the true reason for the lack of OIS: it’s not about size, it’s not about costs… it’s about IQ at the wide end (16mm)! He says:
“OIS needs to move the lens inside to compensate for camera shake and as a result can cause loss of resolution in the edges of the image. In long zoom lens such as the XF50-140mmF2.8, the angle of view is narrow enough to not show this negative effect of OIS in the edges. However, the angle of view of the XF16-55mm, when set to the widest setting, is large enough for OIS to affect resolution at the edge of the image. Considering this trade-off, because we wanted this zoom lens to start wide at 16mm and F2.8, and we wanted to best edge-to-edge quality throughout the entire zoom range, we decided to not employ OIS.”
Mr. Soga also confirms that teh XF 35mmF2 will have faster focussing and “we may create a 2x converter in the future although this has not been confirmed.”
Let’s start the week with a fresh rumor update coming from our top Japanese source. The source contacted me this weekend to let us know that:
Fuji indeed plans to launch a 4K capable X-PRO2
The Fujifilm X-PRO2 will feature a new and faster processor (EXR III)
We know from Fuji engineers here that X-TRANS sensor requires a lot processing power when shooting video. The current EXR II processor apparently has some difficulties to calculate all the video-data, and this is a reason why the huge advantage of the X-Trans sensor to mitigate moiree in stills doesn’t apply to video. A new and faster EXR III processor could help to sort out this issue.
A couple of days ago I asked over at the FR-facebook page here, if you are excited about the possible 4K capability of the X-PRO2… well, maybe some of you might be surprised with what the majority of followers answered. Check it out here.
Today I have a fresh rumor about the Fujifilm X-PRO2. A new source (thanks!) just told us that the Fujifilm X-PRO2 will be capable to shoot 4K video! Of course, the grain of salt is mandatory for now, at least until I get some confirmation from tursted sources.
So it’s time to update the FujiRumors X-PRO2 specs list. As always, feel free to spread the word… and to quote FujiRumors as the source ;).
Fujifilm X-PRO2 rumored specs list
(TS= trusted source / NeS =New Source / AS = Anonymous Source / SRP = source who was right in the past / ORS = other rumor sites)
– APS-C sensor (TS + AS + AS)
– 24MP sensor (AS) – More than 16MP (AS)
– dual SD card slot (NeS)
– coming late 2015 (TS + AS)
– tilt screen (AS)
– WiFi (AS)
– Non organic ASP-C X-Trans sensor (ORS)
– Price about 20% to 30% more expensive than the X-T1 (AS)
– 4K video (NeS)
Let’s be clear… this is not really a rumor, but the conclusions of the Spanish site dslrmagazine (google translation) after having had a talk with the Fuji Manager at the CP+ in Japan. They tried to read “between the lines” of his statements, and came to the following conclusions:
1) HYBRID VIEWFINDER: The XF 35mmF2 looks a lot like the Leica Summicron-M 50mmF2 [admin: let’s just hope it won’t be that expensive!!!… even with the [shoplink 32741 ebay]terrfic price drop at cameraland right now on the 50mm Summicron APO[/shoplink], this lens is worth about 1/3 of my yearly teachers salary!!… though this version costs “just” $2,100 (discounted)]. But back to the XF 35mmF2: the compact size makes it perfect for cameras with Hybrid Viewfinder – ERGO: the X-PRO2 will feature a Hybrid Viewfinder. In the interview, the manager also said that customers demand to keep the X-PRO1 concept. DSLRmagazine thinks that this statement is another hint for an X-PRO2 with Hybrid Viewfinder.
2)MORE COMPACT: After the talk with the manager, DSLRmagazine concludes that the X-PRO2 will have the elegance and great operability of the Leica CL… it won’t be as small as the Leica CL, but smaller than the actual X-PRO1.
3) X-TRANS: It will have an evolution (not revolution) of the X-TRANS sensor.
4) Not X-PRO2 related, but the manager says that the 56 APD version isn’t really selling well. You can find a [shoplink 32731 ebay]BIG $300 price drop on the 56mmAPD at cameraland[/shoplink].
5) The X-M line is dead. Long live the X-A line!
At the end they make clear again, that these are just their suppositions after the talk with the manager. Of course, there is much more to read at dslrmagazine (google translation).
FujiRumors says: HVF is a must, X-Trans evoltutions sounds interesting… but smaller? What do you think? Should the X-PRO2 keep the X-PRO1 size or become smaller?
