I have written a lot about my different lenses over the years, and I even mentioned the 16-55 lens on my last blog relating to my seven year journey with Fujifilm. I am currently halfway through writing my most recent blog regarding the new style of street photography that I have implemented using the flip out screens on my X-T2’s. However, I have been so excited recently about my 16-55 lens that I have momentarily dropped all other projects, so I can write a long-term review on this wonderful lens.

Sony A7sII Vs. Fujifilm X-T2 for Video ** Lens Stars: Fujinon XF 16-55 beats G-Master Lens ** Freemod X-Cap2 Review (miXed zone)

Sony Vs. Fuji

  • Sony A7sii vs Fujifilm X-T2 for video review at Maru Films youtube. Yep, the Sony has IBIS, but the reviewer is considering to go for Fuji anyway. The colors, the overall size and more convince him that Fujifilm X-T2 is the better choice.

More Firmware Details :: FW Update for X-Pro2, X-Pro1 and Lenses (XF16-55 Less Chromatic Aberration)… Coming Very Soon!

 photo KAIZEN_zps1fdb780f.png

IT’S KAIZEN TIME

A trusted source just contacted me, and told me that not only the X-Pro2, but also the X-Pro1 and many Fujinon lenses will get a Firmware update soon. Here is what the source told us:

X-Pro2 Firmware

As already leaked here, the X-Pro2 FW 2.00 will bring a new and improved autofocus algorithm (faster and more accurate AF, more AF-points and AF tracking improvements), support for EF-X500 flash, Auto Power feature changes, and Corrected AF frame function improvement.

But the same leaked press release, said that the improvements will actually be 20. So what else will come? Well, Fuji will improve Eye Detection, additional flash settings can be located on the Q menu. Regarding the tracking, you will be able to use the electronic shutter in AF-C. There will improvements in the OVF and some bugs will be fixed, too.

It sounds overall like a huge Firmware update that will bring some big and many small improvements… well done, Fuji… you’ll make lots of X-Pro2 owners very happy soon :)

X-Pro1 Firmware

Just like the X-Pro2, also the X-Pro1 will get the Corrected AF frame function improvement. I haven’t heard of other improvements.

Fujinon Lenses Firmware

With the new Firmware, the Chromatic Aberration on the XF16-55mmF2.8 will be better controlled. Many Fujinon lenses will also get better parallax correction.

FINAL NOTE

It’s rare, but it can happen (and it already happened) that a new firmware can contain minor bugs. In the past Fujifilm usually was very fast to fix them. But I’d recommend not to update, if you need the X-Pro2 for an important job/event. Use the current firmware and wait a few days after the firmware release. Fujifilm will be monitoring the situation after the FW release very closely, also by reading the feedback from X-shooters here on Fujirumors.

It might also a good thing to read again Rico’s article “Tips for updating your Firmware

BUG :: Temporary Suspension of Firmware download for XF90mmF2 and XF16-55mmF2.8

2000px-Fujifilm_logo.svg

Notification regarding temporary suspension of firmware download XF90mmF2 R LM WR / XF16-55mmF2.8 R LM WR

The FUJIFILM X-series product range has received excellent reviews from a wide range of users since launch. The excellent build, retro design, intuitive controls and outstanding image quality combine to form a package which has delighted professional and enthusiast photographers across the world.

Unfortunately we have discovered that the latest firmware of XF90mmF2 R LM WR (Ver.1.01) and XF16-55mmF2.8 R LM WR (Ver1.10) launched on 9 June 2016 has a potential issue which may result in a failure if the upgrade is conducted with a camera whose firmware is the previous version. In this case, the LCD on the camera blinks on & off after the camera is turned on and then a “Lens Error” message is indicated. If this phenomenon doesn’t occur after the firmware upgrade, these lenses can be used normally.
Due to the above, the download service of the firmware of XF90mmF2 R LM WR and XF16-55mmF2.8 R LM WR is temporarily suspended.
We have addressed the potential issue and will release an improved firmware for both the XF90mmF2 R LM WR and XF16-55mmF2.8 R LM WR. This latest version will be released on our Global site on 21 July 2016.

Fujifilm Patents XF16-55mmF2.8… with OIS !

OIS

XF16-55mmF2.8 OIS len

egami spotted the following patent: an XF16-55mmF2.8 OIS lens… yep, with OIS!

Fujifilm received quite a shitstorm because of the lack of OIS in the XF16-55mmF2.8. The official explanation why Fujifilm didn’t implement OIS in the 16-55 can be found here:

OIS needs to move the lens inside to compensate for camera shake and as a result can cause loss of resolution in the edges of the image. In long zoom lens such as the XF50-140mmF2.8, the angle of view is narrow enough to not show this negative effect of OIS in the edges. However, the angle of view of the XF16-55mm, when set to the widest setting, is large enough for OIS to affect resolution at the edge of the image. Considering this trade-off, because we wanted this zoom lens to start wide at 16mm and F2.8, and we wanted to best edge-to-edge quality throughout the entire zoom range, we decided to not employ OIS.”

PATENT : google translated

Fujifilm patent applications corresponds to the anti-vibration 16-55mm F2.8 but is an optical system, the was released is not an anti-vibration 16-55mm F2.8 It was. Since the anti-vibration corresponding to the lens is bloated, is that of to have to dare not designed with anti-vibration. Or if there the Kai, XF FUJINON 16-55Mm F2.8 It is R LM WR good lens of reputation.

But better to hesitation that it is not in the anti-vibration would be many. Because when you pursue the optical performance lens resulting in a bloated, Sony and Olympus , as, in the telephoto lens Dual IS, I standard system is perhaps good to within the body anti-shake.

EISA AWARDS 2015-2016 to Fujifilm X-T10 + XF 16-55… and to Sony, Canon, Panasonic, Olympus, Leica, Nikon…

There is a reason to celebrate for Fujiflm… and for Canon… and Leica, Sony, Olympus, Panasonic, Nikon…

EISA declared them the best cameras of the year! It just depends in which category, and there are quite a lot of them at the EISA Photography Award!

Last year EISA was able to distinguish between “advanced CSC” (Fuji X-T1) and “professional CSC” (Sony A7r). I could never figure out what makes one camera advanced, and the other professional.

For sure CanonWatch would not call the A7 line a PRO camera, and not even the brand new Sony A7rII. He actually even calls it the most over-hyped and over-priced camera of the year… Read why here.

At least, this year EISA decided to drop the “advanced CSC Category“. Here are a few awards:

“Unashamedly aimed at Pros!” XF 16-55mmF2.8 WR highly recommended at Cameralabs & ePhotoZine… and more!

A bunch of tests about the XF 16-55mmF2.8 WR has been published over the last few days. I invite you to check out all the reviews listed in this post. But it’s pretty clear: the XF 16-55mmF2.8 WR is another optically outstanding Fujinon lens. Fuji spoiled us with truly amazing glass… so no surprise that X-shooters consider the Fujinon lenses the highlight of the X-system (see the poll at the bottom).

And now, have a good read:

1) Every good read begins with Rico’s First Looks…. and here is the one about the XF 16-55. If you didn’t still check it out, then make sure to click on this link.

2) 16-55mm f2.8 review at cameralabs: “Ultimately the XF 16-55mm is unashamedly aimed at pros, particularly event shooters who’ll want to pair it with the XF 40-150mm and know they’ll have a bright f2.8 aperture throughout a broad range and not need to worry about inclement weather. Suffice it to say wedding and street photographers will love it.”

3) 16-55 review at ephotozine: “Optically, this standard zoom from Fujifilm is up there with the best f/2.8 zooms available for APS-C format cameras. It is capable of delivering excellent sharpness, with low CA and distortion. More importantly, it handles well, and features such as weather sealing and the Nano-GI coatings applied to this lens ensure it is capable of holding its own amongst the best zoom lenses currently available.”

4) Fuji XF 16-55mm f/2.8 zoom — a hands-on review at aboutphotography-tomgrill: “If I were a wedding photographer depending only upon a Fuji equipment kit, I would add this lens to the mix for its high resolution and fast aperture. Same would be true if I only used a Fuji X camera for lifestyle or landscape photography.

5) Fuji XF 16-55 LM WR Review (Part 2) at adamkingphoto: “The Fuji XF 16-55 F2.8 is hands down the best standard zoom available to demanding Fuji shooters, and I would consider it essential for event shooting, outdoor exploration, and any high-performance work in the standard range.”

6) Review at thephoblographer: “Is this a great lens? Absolutely, but it’s one that we’d keep in our camera bag and relegate to special needs purposes when we really need a zoom lens.”

7) Spanish Field Test at dslrmagazine (translation).

8) 16-55 compared to 23 at soundimageplus and compared to the Sony A7 Mk II 35mm Prime here: “Completely contrary to my expectations, the Fuji / Zoom combination turned in a better looking file than the Sony at f/2.8 and ISO 200, even after the upsizing and the Sony A7 Mk II / prime combination turned in a slightly better performance than the Fuji at f/2.8 and ISO 3200. ?????”
