Fujifilm X-A7 Discontinued after Only 11 Months: Fujifilm X-A8 Coming or X-A7 Failure?

The Fujifilm X-A7 is actually a lovely little entry level camera launched just almost a year ago and hit the market about 11 months ago.

But now it is already marked as discontinued at BHphoto here, it’s on low stock or backordered at Adorama here and it’s unavailable also at AmazonUS here (where you might find some via third party only) and FocusCamera.

For a long time, the Fujifilm X-A line was an absolute best seller in Asia, especially in Thailand. In fact, pushed by the X-A line, Fujifilm was able to outsell all other camera brands (Canon included) and reach an incredible 50% mirrorless market share.

Don’t believe me, but check out the official Fuji-data leaked by FujiRumors here and other Fujifilm manager statements listed below.

Now the options are two:

  1. the camera is going to be replaced already and we will soon get a Fujifilm X-A8
  2. the X-A line lost its magic appeal in Thailand and sold terribly bad

Looking at the Fujifilm X-A line release timeline, we can see that there was a successor about ever 16 to 18 months. If Fujifilm would stick with that, then the Fujifilm X-A8 should come in early 2021. So in my opinion, it’s a bit too early to discontinue the X-A7, but maybe Fujifilm doesn’t think so, or they are really going to replace the X-A7 earlier than expected.

More likely in my opinion is that the X-A line just lost its magic in Asia, especially in Thailand, and that it fell victim to the rise of smartphones and to COVID-19.

Fujifilm X-A line success story:

  • Fujifilm managers said in March 2018 to dpreivew: “In Thailand, our market share for mirrorless is over 40%.”
  • Fuji Guys Billy said in February 2017, that “Fujifilm is Nr.1 brand in Thailand“. He does not specify if DSLR is included, but it seems from the video he is including DSLR cameras, too.
  • in 2016 a source told me that “Fujifilm was the best-selling MILC in 2015, outselling all the Canon interchangeable lens cameras (DSLR and those EOS-M lines) combined“
  • a Manager said to Spanish website in 2016, that ““there is a little known fact: in Thailand, for example, X-A series outsells Canon!”

I guess the point of these posts, is just to share little curiosities, because I have fun collecting these things, and if it’s fun for me, it helps me to run FujiRumors with even more joy. So, in case you are not interested, just skip these handful of posts a year, and wait for the 60+ rumors I share a year or the rest of the 1,000+ free articles a year.

Astrophotography with Fujifilm: Get Stellar Results with Fujifilm APS-C and Medium Format Cameras

I have received an email from a fellow member of our Fujifilm Astrophography facebook group, which said:

I was thinking you could perhaps share some of the pics taken on the FB group “Astrophotography with Fujifilm” that you manage. Lots of awesome pictures there! We often hear you need an expensive full frame camera or big telescope, but that’s just wrong, as this group suggests.

That would be great to attract more Fuji shooters to this group, it’s a very nice community where we help each other and learn from our experiences.

Astro can be daunting for the newbie, but it shouldn’t. Also, there aren’t a lot of Fuji shooters in the astro community, so I’m sure it could spread the virus — the good one!

Oh well, here it is.

Fujifilm X Webcam for Mac Released

Fujifilm X webcam for Mac has now been released. This software allows to run all tethering capable Fujifilm cameras as a webcam (all except X-T1, as that one has too old hardware).

The compatible Fujifilm cameras are: GFX100, GFX 50S, GFX 50R, X-H1, X-Pro2, X-Pro3, X-T2, X-T3, X-T4.

You can download Fujifilm X Webcam for Mac here.

Now, Fujifilm offers two different “webcam” solutions:

  • via Fujifilm X Webcam software for tethering capable X/GFX cameras
  • built-in directly in camera, for X-A7 and X-T200

The Fujifilm X-Pro3 will Save Photography and More Companies Should Take the Risk to Do Unique Things

GxAce published his Fujifilm X-Pro3 long term review with the title “the camera that will save photography“.

So, why should the X-Pro3 save photography.

in a world of fully articulating screens and in body image stabilization, cameras these days are getting pretty stale to me. They all pretty much look the same and they all pretty much have the same features, except for one: the Fujifilm X-Pro3

I think it’s awesome that Fujifilm basically ignored everything and made a camera that is unique. It’s such a cool idea, what photography needs to be doing to stay relevant.

I hope more camera companies will take risks, do unique things, have unique ideas.

We have reached the point where every cameras is amazing, they all pretty much can do the same things. What I think will be the differentiating factor going on in the future will be how we interface with the camera.

Let’s Fly High: About Montaigne, Nietzsche, Travel Photography with Fujifilm and Why Travelling is the Best School for Our Soul

According to a chart published somewhere, you get 0.05% sharper images using lens x vs lens y

No, wait… that’s not that kind of post… today we fly high… and we fly far… we are going to meet the wonderful diversity on this world.

And who could introduce us better to post like this, than big tech vloggers Michel de Montaigne, my most loved author ever, who once said:

Travel is in my opinion a very profitable exercise; the soul is there continually employed in observing new and unknown things, and I do not know a better school wherein to model life than by incessantly exposing to it the diversity of so many other lives, fancies, and usances, and by making it relish a perpetual variety of forms of human nature. The body is, therein, neither idle nor overwrought; and that moderate agitation puts it in breath.

In the spirit of Montaigne’s quote above, I share a Fujifilm X travel images roundup that hopefully inspires you to go out, meet, embrace the wonderful diversity there is on this planet.

Fujifilm BAYER vs X-TRANS Blind Test: 88% of Preferences Go To…

Almost 2 years ago, I wrote a comprehensive article comparing the virtues of Bayer vs X-Trans sensor, giving you reasons why Fujifilm should stick with X-Trans, and on the other hand telling you also why for other reasons Fujifilm should leave X-Trans for its APS-C sensors.

Attention: it’s a long article. So do not click this link, if you don’t like it when my articles are too long.

I stand by everything I said back then.

Of course the debate is not ending. Hence, Andrew did what probably is the best thing to do, to evaluate which sensor is better: a blind test.

200+ people commented on his video, and since people do not like long articles, I will leave it to you to read them all, take paper and pen, and note all the results.

There were some (not many) cases, where people didn’t have a clear preference and said that both are very good.

In most cases, people had a rather clear preference.

Fujifilm launches “FUJIFILM X Webcam” to Run Your Fujifilm X/GFX Cameras as a Webcam

Fujifilm has just launched FUJIFILM X Webcam, which will allow you to run some Fujifilm cameras as a webcam.

A few notes from FujiRumors:

  • It is only for PC… but…
  • also the much praised Canon Webcam Utility software is PC only
  • it looks to be compatible with the same list of cameras that you can tether with
