Matt Granger Fujifilm X-H1 Review: “Phenomenal, Best Ergonomics, Survives Water Bucket Attack and Quite Good Battery Life”

Fujifilm X-H1 Review by Matt Granger

After Jared Polin’s very controversial Fujifilm X-H1 review, now it’s time for Matt Granger to share his thoughts about the X-H1.

Here is what he says about the X-H1 (tested while travelling through wonderful Laos, where he also used the X-T2):

Jared Polin (Not so Positive) Fujifilm X-H1 Review Vs. Sony A7III

Fujifilm X-H1 Review

Jared Polin reviewed the Fujifilm X-H1 and compared it with the Sony A7III. The review is 33:19 minutes long. He uses firmware ver 1.10 (and not the latest ver 1.11, which fixes some bugs).

If you notice horizontal flashing lines in the review, it’s not Fuji’s fault. The review was filmed with a Sony A9 camera.

Here is a summary:

Tamron 150-600 AF on Fujifilm X-H1 through Fringer EF-FX adapter (firmware V2.30 Coming Mid-August)

Tamron 150-600 AF on Fujifilm X-H1

Just a few days ago, Fringer released ver. 2.20 of their smart adapters for the Fujifilm X and GFX system.

Now they are already working on the next firmware update ver.2.30,which will be released in mid-August.

As a teaser, Fringer posted a video showing the Tamron 150-600 F/5-6.3 autofocus on the Fujifilm X-H1 using the Fringer EF-FX adapter (see video above or on Fringer’s youtube here).

One of the main critics when looking at the Fujifilm system, is the lack of autofocus third party lens support.

Well, all those nice AF adapters that are now on the market (full list below), should definitely weaken these critics, since more and more Canon, Tamron, Sigma and soon also Nikon lenses will work just fine with AF on your Fujifilm camera.

So DO NOT sell your beloved Canon & Co glass to quickly, when you switch to Fujifilm. If there is a lens you abolutely love (and is not covered by native Fujinon lenses), you might get one of those adapters to make it work on your Fujfiilm camera.

Firmware 2.20 for Fringer EF/FX Smart AF Adapters Available – Fujifilm X-H1 IBIS Works Properly

Fringer EF-FX Smart Adapter

Fringer Press Text

Finally, X-H1’s IBIS works properly!

The new firmware has changed IS control logics of both IS lenses and camera’s IBIS functions.

– For lenses with IS (or OS/VC)

When IS switch on the lens is on, IS function is controlled by camera menu. Mode 1 (Continuous): IS function is always on. Mode 2 (Shooting only): IS function is activated when shutter release button half-pressed and deactivated about 2 seconds after its release. Be noted that if camera body has IBIS, it will be disabled if a lens with built-in IS function is installed.

– For lenses without IS function installed on a camera with IBIS.

Begin with V2.20, IBIS function of X-H1 works properly. It’s controlled by the menu, i.e. Mode 1 (Continuous), Mode 2 (Shooting only) and OFF, which is similar to native XF lenses without built-in IS function.

Be noted, IBIS performance of lenses longer than 100mm may be poor.

In addition to IS function change, following lenses have been added to tested and opimized lens list.

And following lenses have been improved in AF performance or new lens firmware compatibility.

Visit my website to download the detailed release notes and V2.20 firmware file.

Make sure current firmware of your adapter is V2.x before installing the new firmware. If it’s V1.x, please install V2.10 first. Read the release notes for more details.

Fringer EF-FX Pro adapter is open for pre-order now. This batch would begin to be shipped before August 3. Please visit my web store to place your order.

Thank you!

Huge Deals on Fujifilm X-H1, X-T2, X-Pro2 and X-E3 Coming. Big Sell-Out Before Arrival of Fujifilm X-T3

Fujifilm Deals

Fujifilm is getting ready for the next wave of big deals.

In fact the Polish Fujifilm page here already uploaded the list of gear that will get a huge discount from July 1 to September 30, 2018.

According to the Polish Fujifilm page, you will save between €200 and €300 on the following items:

  • Fujifilm X-H1 body only or with vertical grip
  • Fujifilm X-T2 body only or with XF18-55
  • Fujifilm X-E3 with XF23/2, XF35/2 or XF50/2
  • Fujifilm X-Pro2 with XF23/2, XF35/2 or XF50/2

Of course if Fujifilm Poland launches these deals, we can expect the same deals to be available in many other European countries, too.

And since this is evidently the big sell-out before the arrival of the Fujifilm X-T3 in September, I would not be surprised to see this sale offered also by Fujifilm North America.

But keep in mind one thing: the Fujifilm X-T3 will not have IBIS, so if you want all your (Fujinon or third party) lenses stabilized, then you have to go for the Fujifilm X-H1.

DON’T BE AFRAID to miss the deals. Just follow FR and you can rest assured that I will notify you the very same second that the deals go live via Facebook, RSS-feed and Twitter.

NEW FIRMWARE

We already shared ZedProMedia’s X-H1 old vs. new firmware comparison here, as well as feedback coming from our fantastic X-H group and X-T group… and it’s all very positive feedback :)

Mostly we noticed a drastically improved AF in video as well as no exposure flickering in video anymore.

But of course it doesn’t stop here, so here are a few more:

Fujifilm X-H1 Old Vs. New Firmware Test: Mindblowing Autofocus, No Exposure Flickering, and Any Bugs to Report?

Fujifilm X-H1 Old Vs. New Firmware Test

ZedProMedia compared the old Fujifilm X-H1 fimrware ver.1.02 with the brand new firmware 1.10, also using a Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 lens with Fringer smart adapter

He notices that:

  • the AF improvement during video recording is massively improved with lenses like the XF56mmF1.2 and better also with XF10-24. Smooth and accurate AF.
  • with the Fringer with the Sigma 18-35mmF1.8 more jumpy AF
  • Auto ISO exposure not flickering anymore, very smooth
  • this update will make a lot more people happy

You can see the video at ZedProMedia here and don’t forget to follow the dedicated Fujifilm X-H facebook page.

Mindblowing AF

ZedProMedia is not the only one, who thinks Fujifilm got it right. Our Fujifilm X-H facebook group is starting to fill with enthusiastic comments as well as Keno’s video demonstrations here.

I was super close switching to Sony … I couldn’t use the X-H1 on a gimbal with AF. Had to use my X-T2s […] Now I can sell my X-T2s finally and buy a second X-H1 ?”

It does look blazing fast indeed… and if it’s too fast and not smooth enough, you can set the a different AF transition speed :) .

Firmware: The Good and The Bug

Here is some more firmware feedback, but it’s still from the previous firmware version (X-T2 ver. 4.00 and X-H1 ver. 1.02). The current versions are 4.10 for the X-T2 and 1.10 for the X-H1.

… and the Bug

5 Things I Like and Dislike About the Fujifilm X-H1 – ZedProMedia

5 Likes & Dislike about the Fujifilm X-H1

ZedProMedia just shared a video about the 5 things he dislikes about the Fujifilm X-H1, mostly for video use. You can check out the video here.

  • Battery Life
  • Video File splitting every 5 minutes and record limit
  • 120fps has lots of moirè and aliasing (probably a procssing limit. X-T3 will have faster processor ;) )
  • jerky IBIS in video. Does not look so natural like GH5
  • video AF is not that reliable and hunts, but really depends on the lens you use (fixable via firmware update)

In his following video he shares the 5 things he loves about the Fujifilm X-H1. You can check out the video here.

  • buttons, handling and grip, feels like a beastly chunk of a camera
  • EVF super bright, definitely better than X-T2
  • Eterna film simulation. Very easy to grade if you don’t shoot Flog
  • autofocus system, really fast and snappy (for stills)
  • silent shutter. Insanely quite. Great for weddings
  • BONUS: 200 mbps 4K

Tony Northrup Fujifilm X-H1 Review (Vs. Sony A7III)

Fujifilm X-H1

Tony Northrup published his Fujifilm X-H1 review. Check out the full video at youtube here. Some excerpts:

  • loves mechanical dial
  • awesome eye detection AF
  • X-H1 is better camera than any Canon and Nikon APS-C camera, expect for battery life and not so much glass as for Canon and Nikon
  • touch screen sucks
  • for sports a Nikon D500 is better
  • he sees no difference between Bayer and X-Trans, and actually a disadvantage because he uses Lightroom
  • Sony A7III has better buffer and has eye detect AF in continous focus. Better battery and IQ, and you can upgrade to higher MP with A7rIII, but with Fuji APS-C you are limited to 24MP
