Kipon Baveyes EF-FX AF Autofocus “Speedbooster” Adapters Review

Kipon Baveyes EF-FX AF

When I was at photokina 2018, I stopped at the Kipon booth, and checked out the Kipon EF-FX 0.7x focal reducer (the quivalent of Metabones’ Speedbooster). Since I couldn’t test it, all I can say it that it feels very well build.

If you want to know more about it, definitely check out the Kipon Baveyes EF-FX ”Speedbooster” review at Mattias Burling Youtube.

PROS

  • all metal very sturdy build
  • USB port for firmware
  • similar results to Viltrox and Metabones focal reducers, and no so buggy like the Viltrox
  • AF for stills is pretty good

CONS

  • with some lenses swirly bokeh (the reviewers likes it, but some others might not like it)
  • X-H1 IBIS sometimes gives vignetting and ND sometimes creeps into frame
  • AF is not as reliable as native lens
  • not for streets and sports photography
  • Video AF is not great

You can purchase the following Kipon Adapters for Fujifilm:

Fujifilm X-T3 is a Phenomenal Video Camera Say DPReview and Max Yuryev

DPReview

DPReview tested the Fujifilm X-T3 capabilities and concludes that the X-T3 “lives ip to its impressive specifications“. You can check out their video related review here. Their key points:

  • stunning video that lives up to X-T3 impressive specifications
  • Zebras and magnification during shooting make it easier to capture footage
  • Video works well enough to be usable for all but the most critical work
  • Lack of in-body stabilization makes it a tripod or gimbal camera
  • Video AF: generally holding focus steady unless it finds itself with nothing it can focus on. With a little tuning we generally found we could get the result we wanted for a range of different shooting situations
  • The Movie Silent Control mode, while fiddly to use, makes the X-T3 one of the most pleasant cameras for shooting both stills and video on
  • The X-T3’s 4K appears a little more detailed than the 4K output of the Sony A7 III. 1080p output isn’t as impressive, though it’s more detailed than the A7 III’s footage. This advantage is maintained into the 120 fps mode

DPReview also allows you to compare the video stills studio test. Check it out here.

Max Yuryev

Max Yuryev says the Fujifilm X-T3 a phenomenal camera for video shooters. Some key points of the video we share below (or see directly on youtube here):

  • it’s handsome
  • kit lens feels so solid, very good performer
  • tally light when filming, so you know when it’s recording
  • eye detection during video is very impressive feature
  • so many video options
  • H265 codec needs lots of CPU power when editing on computer
  • a big step above X-T2 in almost every way
  • battery life not the best
  • no IBIS

Panasonic Says Organic Sensor Cooperation with Fujifilm Continues. Mass Production Will Take a Bit more Time

Organic Sensor

Over 5 years ago, Fujifilm and Panasonic announced the development of the organic sensor.

Now Panasonic Manager Mr. Uematsu said to personal-view here, that the organic sensor is still in development with Fujifilm, but it takes more time than expected:

As you know, since its initial announcement in 2016, there is a continuous cooperation between Panasonic and FujiFilm in development of the organic sensor technology.

The recent results are very promising. The mass production of this kind of sensor, however, will take a little bit more time, and today I cannot say when we can use this kind of sensor.”

I remind you that in December 2014, our sources told us here, that the crucial problems to be solved with the organic sensor are heat generation and battery drain.

As Panasonic officially said in February 2016 the organic sensor (with global shutter) has 123dB dynamic range.

Fujifilm X-H2: Are You Waiting for X-H2 to Upgrade/Switch or Did you Get the Fujifilm X-T3 Already? POLL

Fujifilm X-H2

After the announcement of the Fujifilm X-T3, I get countless emails, asking me when the Fujifilm X-H2, Fujifilm X-Pro3, Fujifilm X-T30, Fujifilm X-E4, Fujfiilm X100V or Fujifilm X200 with latest X-Trans sensor 4 and X Processor 4 will come.

I am working on this, and I will post updates on FR as soon as I can. So make sure not to miss them by following us on Facebook, RSS-feed, Instagram, Youtube and Twitter.

One of the guys, asking me about the Fujifilm X-H2 is FR Sacha, who wrote me:

What would you think of running a poll to get a feel for the interest with the Fujifilm X-H2?

More specifically to have an idea of how many users didn’t upgrade to the X-T3, and are actually waiting on the Fuji XH2. This is something I see come back a lot in the comments of the X-T3 reviews so I’d be curious to see what a poll would look like. It could even motivate Fujifilm to hasten the X-H2’s release date, after seeing the results of the poll :)

One note: I feel people waiting on the Fujifilm X-H2 are actually mostly non-fuji users who want to switch to Fuji but maybe are still on the fence and would like the “whole package” with IBIS to really switch. So maybe the results for Fuji users could be a bit less in “favor” of the X-H2.”

And since your participation, ideas and contributions are the heart and soul of this blog, I will be happy to take Sacha’s advice and make a poll out of it.

Check out the poll below… and read the options carefully ;)

Kai’s Fujifilm X-T3 Review: “The X-T3 is One Reason Not to go Full Frame. One of the Best Cameras of the Year”

Kai’s Fujifilm X-T3 Review

Kai just published his Fujifilm X-T3 hands on review here. Here the key points:

  • It’s quite mind blowing how much stuff they put into the X-T3
  • Looks same as X-T2, but ergonomically Fuji made a several little improvements
  • he runs over the specs we already know
  • X-H1 more robust body with top LCD screen
  • Battery life improved, but still not the best
  • face and eye AF is really good, quick, so snappy
  • focus is fantastic
  • AF tracking is good
  • 30 fps is crazy
  • low light AF is pretty acceptable
  • noise performance is good up to 12,800
  • not too expensive camera, it’s a bargain in comparison to X-H1
  • X-T3 shutter is not as super quiet as X-H1
  • there is still life in crop
  • for video, the Fujifilm X-T3 has slightly more dynamic range than Panasonic GH5
  • for video, the continous AF is quick and very accurate. Could have smoother focus transition
  • no IBIS, but with stabilized lenses works good for handheld video
  • rolling shutter quite low and very good
  • X-T3 is possibly one of the best cameras of the year
  • if you are thinking of going full frame, the X-T3 is one reason not to go FF
  • tasty Fujifilm colors
  • a hot performer for stills and video
  • if it had IBIS, it would make the X-H1 pointless

Size Comparison: Fujifilm GFX 100S vs Sony A7III, Nikon D5, Canon 1DX, Canon EOS R, Nikon Z7, Nikon D850, Fuji GFX 50R

Fujifilm GFX 100

The Fujifilm GFX 100 megapixel camera is big, but how big is compared to other cameras with integrated battery grip, the Nikon D5 and the Canon 1Dx MK II?

I thought I am going to check this out in today’s article.

Just for fun, I did throw in the brand new Fujifilm GFX 50R in the comparison.

The size is about the same of the Nikon D5 and Canon 1Dx MK II, but consider that the Fujifilm GFX 100S has a 1.7x larger sensor in it as well as in body image stabilization (IBIS), and no course no mirror.

Seen from the top (images below), the Fujifilm GFX 100S much more protruding viewfinder makes it thicker overall. I remind you, that you can remove the viewfinder on the Fujifilm GFX 100S. Might be handy if you want to store it in the bag, since it makes the camera sensibly sleeker.

At the very bottom you can see the real life size comparison between the Fujifilm GFX 100S, GFX 50S and GFX 50R, that I made at during my stay at Photokina. You can see that, with battery grip attached, the Fujifilm GFX 50S is actually slightly bigger than the Fujifilm GFX 100 megapixel.

I also added a size comparison between the Fujifilm GFX 100 megapixel versus the Sony A7III, Canon EOS R, Nikon Z7 and Nikon D850, but those cameras do not have an integrated battery grip.

RUMOR: Fujifilm GFX 100 with Pixel Shift Multishot

Fujifilm GFX 100

After having successfully told you almost a year ago (in December 2017) that the Fujifilm GFX 100S will come with IBIS, we now have more details for you.

According to our sources, the Fujifilm GFX 100S will have:

  • pixel shift multishot

Pixel shift multishot can be used with static subject. The IBIS moves the sensor into different positions and takes several images that it then combines into a single high resolution image (just in case 100 MP is not high resolution enough already ;) ).

Currently the Fujifilm X-H1 can’t do pixel shift, as the special X-Trans array might make pixel shift more complicated compared to the convential Bayer sensor. But this does not mean, that Fujifilm won’t figure it out at some point, how to bring pixel shift also to X-Trans.

The Fujifilm GFX 100, though, will feature a new Bayer sensor, hence pixel shift might be easier to achieve.

In addition to the new rumored specs today, a Fujifilm manager told us here that the GFX 100S will have:

The Fujifilm GFX 100 will surely be beast of a camera.

DPReview TV: Fujifilm X-T3 Review

Chris and Jordan from DPReview TV just published their full Fujifilm X-T3 review on the DPR youtube channel here. Some key points:

STILLS by Chris

  • X-T3 has 1/3rd stop better dynamic range over X-T2 at base ISO, but slightly worst at high ISO (a worthy trade-off for higher megapixel and full sensor PDAF)
  • Rolling shutter very good
  • Eye-Detect autofocus tracking is very good, but Sony still slightly higher hit rate.
  • by far the most capable Fujifilm focusing camera. Easily handle wedding, sports, wildlife etc.
  • Face detection can occasionally lock on something else, and not on face
  • You can’t toggle and select the face to track, if you have more faces in frame

I remind you that lab tests at Photonstophotos here, show that the X-T3 is slightly better dynamic range at base ISO as well as high ISO.

VIDEO by Jordan

  • Skin tones, colors and contrast are impressive
  • Video AF very reliable. Minimal wobbling
  • Jordan would like the ability to tab the subject on touch screen and camera starts tracking like Nikon Z7
  • Separate video/stills exposure if you use silent movie controls
  • 4K video is very clean and very sharp, does not look oversharpened
  • 120fps quality is very good, quite sharp. Less moiree and aliasing than Sony
  • image does not require much post processing
  • one of the strongest video mirrorless out there
  • He says Fuji should better come out with a Fujifilm X-H2 soon
  • X-T100 flippy screen would have been nice

CONCLUSION

  • Fujifilm X-T3 has significant upgrades
  • AF is really that much better
  • better EVF
  • can handle any kind of photography
  • only negative, is lack of IBIS
  • fantastic APS-C camera
