IBIS on Fujifilm Cameras: Could This Solution Bring it to X-Series Cameras?

Before we start, I will make clear that I’m not an expert in designing and developing cameras. So I don’t know if the solution recommended by FR-reader CUCKOO is realistic. I’ll just share it here so that we can think about it.

IBIS or OIS, which is better?

Just quickly, in the past we already had an IBIS Vs. OIS debate here (including CaNikon statements about the 3 reasons why OIS is better than IBIS).

Also, remember that OIS/IBIS compensates only for the shakiness of your camera, but not for the “shakiness” of the world outside. The best OIS and IBIS on earth can not freeze the movement of people and animals around you or of branches and flowers dancing in the wind.

With that said, OIS/IBIS is still very handy feature, and I consider it a pity, that Fujifilm did not implement OIS in the XF 16-55mm F2.8 and the XF 90mm F2. If these two lenses would have OIS, I think the Fujifilm X system would not need IBIS, unless…

  • you shoot with adapted (and slower) glass
  • you shoot video

A Possible Solution for IBIS on X-cameras?

Did you know that there is already this Fujifilm camera with IBIS? Sure, the XP120 is not an X-series camera, but it’s interesting to know that other digital Fujifilm cameras already have optical sensor shift technology.

Now, Fujifilm said it clearly: X-mount is not compatible with IBIS, because IBIS moves the sensor, which means the amount of light at the corners is reduced when the sensor is shifted. You’ll basically get more vignetting that Fujifilm could correct digitally, but they do not want to do it because “we don’t want to compromise our image quality.”

Ok… so Fujifilm does not want to digitally correct vignetting created by IBIS. But what about the solution proposed by FR-reader CUCKOO in the comments to this post (especially thinking at video with X-gear)? I quote:

“[For video] Fujifilm must swallow their pride and construct a stabiliser solution. If there’s a will there’s a way. For stills I agree with them 100%. For video I disagree 100%.

I think most (all?) videographers today agree that a stabiliser is quite essential to shoot video in many cases, especially if you’re doing it all by yourself, like many artists, YouTubers, one man bands and small production teams are doing it.

The most obvious way to implement a stabiliser would be to crop the readout area a little bit when IBIS is turned on. Enough crop for the stabiliser to work within the image circle. It shouldn’t be too much crop needed actually. This would be invaluable to a lot of video shooters. Turn off the IBIS to have full sensor again.

I recently got a Panasonic GH5 out of necessity. Its yucky colours leaves a lot to be desired. IBIS and no recording time limit however is more important. Colours can be improved a lot afterwards.. Shaky footage is more painful to improve in post.. and it cannot improved as well.. love-hate relationship with ge GH5.

To me, this sounds like a relative simple workaround. But as said, I am no expert, and FR-reader CUCKOO and myself might miss something.

Feel free to drop your considerations in the comments.

enjoy your Saturday :)

Kaizen? Sorry Fuji, We Can’t Get Enough :) ! New 30+ Wish List of Future Improvements!

 photo KAIZEN_zps1fdb780f.png

Dear Fujifilm, we love the Kaizen love you give to our cameras. But you know… we can never get enough :)

So here are some more firmware ideas for the future, shared by FR-reader Fujica (high time to share it :))

And you know it… Fujifilm Top Managers Read you!

  1. Interlock AF Type setting to AF Focus setting
For example if you switch to single shot Focus (S) on the camera to then switch to Single Point focus automatically. If the camera is set to Continuous Focus to then automatically switch to Zone AF. – Of course the user should be able to set his own AF Type preference for each of the Focus settings (S / C).
  2. Live histogram when shutterbutton is being half pressed
  3. Set maximum number of images in CL / CH
  4. Cooked RAWs of Film Simulations
  5. Cooked RAWs for double exposure
  6. Cooked RAWs for panoramic shots
  7. Cooked RAWs for Dynamic Range Settings (DR200 / DR400 / AUTO)
  8. Reala Film Simulation
  9. Color Chrome Effect
  10. E-Front Curtain Shutter
  11. Date & Time to seconds
  12. More Customisable Q-Menu – More options to choose from (especially RAW options)
  13. AI Focus Intelligent version of One Shot Focus (S) and Continuous Focus (C) (Choose automatically depending upon the fact if the subject is moving or not).
  14. Move Pixel Mapping option under the Wrench (This is not an image IQ option but a maintenance tool)
  15. Quickly Select AF-Custom setting via rear command dial
  16. New Leveler with Tilt & Pitch (as found in the GFX)
  17. Star Rating to be compatible with Lightroom
  18. Eye Sensor while shooting + LCD Menu
  19. Auto ISO WARNING when below recommended shutter speed (Highly needed)
  20. RGB Histogram
  21. Anti Flicker AF option
  22. Noise reduction to ‘Off’
  23. Point-AF Follow Focus within Phase Detect area for moving subjects in AF-C. (sort of widea-area tracking, but different and better).
  24. Focus Tracking with Lock-on: Nikon has added additional options here for erratic or steady subjects allowing me to fine tune my autofocus for every given situation.
  25. Point-AF extension 1 (normal) – 5 (cross)  – 9 points (extended).
  26. CH mode: 6 + 7 fps
  27. Create Tone Curve (As Nikon Picture Control Editor)
  28. Improved ‘Add Noise’ as is calculated with the ACROS film simulation but then available to other Film Simulations. (So with no noise in the highlights and deepest shadows)
  29. 4k Video Image Capture: I can now take 8mp stills while shooting 4k video or extract them frame by frame after the fact.
  30. Slow Motion video Recording / playback
  31. F-Log to SD card

X-Pro2 Specific

  1. ISO set via rear command dial when ISO is set to L
  2. 4K video

What else?

Well, I (Patrick) would really like to have a highlight priority metering mode.

And you?

Fujifilm GFX 50s: First “Significant” Firmware Update Coming in May – Source Right in the Past

According to a source, right in the past, the first “significant” Firmware update for the Fujifilm GFX 50s will come in May.

I don’t know at the moment what “significant” means exactly, but sure it sounds more than just a little bug fix. However, I doubt it will be a huge update like the one that the X-T2 and X-Pro2 recently got (and more will come at the end of May).

As always, it’s a firmware rumor, so even if the top Fuji manager itself would announce it, you should take it with a grain of salt.

However, it’s time for GFX owners to make their first Kaizen wish-list… so don’t hesitate, and drop it here in the comments. You know Fujifilm reads us ;)

X-T2 Video with Zhiyun Crane and Blackmagic Video Assist :: X-TransIII (X-T2) Vs. Bayer (A7II) Texture & Detail Comparison (miXed zone 2/2)

Fujifilm X-T2 Videos
USA: BHphoto / AmazonUS / Adorama

Since the launch of the X-T2 last year, we have all learned how good the 4K video on the X-T2 is. Now, I will not bore you again with cold video tests and comparisons. At this point it’s far more interesting to see what creative photographers and videographers can produce with it.

One of those photographers is Kjetil Kevin Madsen. He made a series of videos using a Fujifilm X-T2 with a Zheyun Crane and Blackmagic Video Assist.

He shared his experience and the videos in his blog post: “Shooting video with the Fujifilm X-T2, Zhiyun Crane and Blackmagic Video Assist” at kjetilkvienmadsen

TransIII Vs. Bayer

Fujifilm X-Trans III vs. Bayer (X-T2 with Fujinon 56mm f1.2 APD against the Sony A7II with Zeiss Batis 85mm f1.8) – Texture & Detail Comparison at thephotofundamentalist: “What I have personally concluded is that when a top quality 24MP Full-Frame sensor and the 24 MP APS-C X-Trans III are compared using vaguely comparable lenses, the results at low ISOs are very close indeed when using Adobe Lightroom CC.”

Fujifilm X-T1 WPJA Award

French wedding photographer Bogarte has been awarded by WPJA (wedding photojournalist association) with 2 pictures shot with his X-T1 and XF16mm 1.4. Would a Fujifilm X-E3 without Tilt Screen be a Dealbreaker for You? – POLL

Fujifilm X-E3 Vs. Rest of the X-World

NOTE: This is NOT a rumor that says the X-E3 has no tilt screen

In my love letter to the X-E3 back in June 2016, I launched several polls, to see which camera X-shooters would prefer to buy: X-E3, X-Pro2, X-T20 and X-T2.

Well, the X-E3 is the clear winner.

Coincidence or not, a few months later, Fujifilm officially said that “we are aware of the many requests for Fujifilm X-E3“.

The rumors? In December 2016 I’ve shared that the X-E3 is back on Fuji’s To-Do list and just recently a new source told us that the X-E3 could come this fall.

Now believe me, I’m a guy that has its feet well set on the ground, but I can’t stop thinking that Fujifilm was motivated to revive plans for the X-E3 after they saw the overwhelming positive response it got here on FujiRumors. And it wouldn’t be the first time, you guys influenced Fujifilm decisions.

They read you guys… your opinions even make it into official Fujifilm meetings with the press ;)

The Problem with the X-E3 Poll

But there was something in the X-E3 Vs. Rest of the X-world polls we should consider: I told you to imagine an X-E3 with tilt screen, and then vote on it.

But what if the X-E3 had no tilt screen? Would you still prefer it over the X-T2, X-T20 and X-Pro2?

To answer this question I will launch the same poll again, and see how good (or not) a “tilt-screen-less” Fujifilm X-E3 performs in the survey compared to an X-E3 with tilt screen.

happy voting :)

Fujifilm GFX: Landscape, Studio… and Look at This Shadow Recovery

Fujifilm GFX 50S – Unboxing, studio test and my first thoughts at ThePhotonauts youtube… shows also the shadow recovery capability of the camera (see image below and video at 3:12)

1) Fuji GFX-50S | Hands-on Review at wexphotographic youtube

2) Landscape photography in Madeira with the Fujifilm GFX in German at 0816fotograf (translation): ” The camera perfectly supports my very conscious and focused landscape photography and my other photographic aims. Thus the Fujifilm GFX is the ideal tool for the future. It is a professional tool that delivers top results when used correctly.”

3) Fujifilm GFX experience in Norway at williamchua (shooting northern lights with the GFX and testing weather sealing and battery life in extreme conditions): “The details and dynamic range is fantastic. Coupled that with the Fuji colors and the black and white film simulation, its definitely a winner.”

4) GFX 50s First Impressions at fotograficoweb: “The GFX is a pure medium format camera – quintessentially. Feels smaller, like a DSLR, follows the X series brilliant ergonomics and disappears from your hand after a couple of hours letting you focus on photography. And this is probably one of the better attributes of the GFX. It is not an extremely desirable object like a X100F or a X-Pro2 from the design point of view but it is highly functional, specially because it produces MF files […] Is it better than a full-frame DSLR? It is DIFFERENT and not comparable. ”
