Get Classic Negative Film Simulation on Fujifilm X-T3 and X-T30 with Capture One Pro 12

Fellow X shooters and FR readers,

This weekend I am extremely busy, as I meet a good friend from abroad I don’t see as often as I would like, so I will be rather fast in my articles.

It’s like one of those weekends, where I focus more on Cabernet, and less on Internet ;).

I feel I needed to make this disclaimer, because I have been told that the latest Capture One Pro 12 (v. 12..14) now allows to select “Classic Negative” film simulation for Fujifilm X-T3 and X-T30 files. Readers tested it on GFX and X-H1 files, and it did not work, though.

Sadly I can not verify that, as I had no time to upgrade my C1 version, but I got multiple reports about that. Once I have time, I will see if the X-E3 (older sensor/processor) also gets Classic Negative options, but I doubt, as the X-H1 files don’t get the Classic Negative option. It might work only with X-Trans 4 / X Processor 4 cameras.

If anyone tests this, feel free to drop a comment down below.

What we all are waiting for, though, is this nice Kaizen firmware update, which should bring Classic Negative to newer Fujifilm cameras.

P.S.: for my weekend trip with my friend, her husband, and my wife, guess what I carry around? Nothing but my X-E3 with 27mm… the perfect combo!

Why I Chose the Fujifilm X-T3 over the X-H1 for Wedding Photography

Wedding Photography with Fujifilm

Reggie Ballesteros picked the Fujifilm X-T3 for his wedding photography business, and not the Fujifilm X-H1. Why?

You can see it in the video above. Down below a summary for those, who are in a hurry and can’t watch it right now.

Why X-T3 is better for weddings:

  • Low Light AF: X-T3 has -3EV autofocus, whereas the X-H1 is at about -1EV
  • AF speed: X-T3 has fastest AF in AF-S and AF-C
  • X-T3 has 100% phase detection coverage (X-H1 only center part)
  • Good enough image quality in low light, dynamic range and ISO performance to deliver high quality images to his clients
  • X-T3 is smaller and lighter
  • X-T3 has better video specs and features
  • X-H1 has IBIS, but it stabilizes only camera shake. It does not freeze the motion of people in your picture. That you can only do by raising shutter speeds or flash
  • at weddings he captures lively images of people in motion
  • he usually shoots at 1/250s and in low light he drops down at a minimum of 1/160s. He never goes slower than that, unless he uses flash
  • one of his workhorses is the 56mmf/1.2, and with that lens, IBIS would only be effective at slower speeds than he uses

Raggie then asked other X shooters, why they think the X-H1 is better for wedding photography, and they said:

Why X-H1 is better for weddings:

  • some drop down to 1/10s to do exterior shots. But Raggie takes maybe 2% of exterior shots on a wedding
  • some say they don’t trust that their hands are steady enough
  • a good reason is if you use the 90mm f/2, where IBIS becomes effective at 1/270, which is faster than what he shoots (1/160). But the XF90mm F2 is the least use lens in his lineup
  • X-H1 ergonomics are way better than X-T3
  • X-H1 shutter is very quite and discrete
  • X-H1 has better high ISO performance over X-T3, because X-T3 has more megapixel. It’s not a huge difference, but a little bit there is difference
  • X-H1 smooths out any handheld video. It does not replace a gimbal, but gives you stable handheld look

Conclusion:

  • he could find IBIS useful in less than 5% or 10% of his shots
  • he uses autofocus 95% to 100% of his shots
  • if he must buy a camera based on better autofocus or IBIS, he goes for the one with better AF
  • there is no best camera for everybody, just cameras that suite your style better

Canon Shooter Tries Fujifilm X-T3 for the First Time: “Intuitive and Inspirational! No Other Digital Camera is so Fun to Use, But…”

Fujifilm X-T3 vs Canon EOS RP: Which Camera Will Save Your Butt if you Underexpose an Image?

Fujifilm X-T3

After his Canon vs Fujifilm colors comparison, Andrew has now published his full Fujifilm X-T3 vs Canon EOS RP comparison.

Yep, once again, Full Frame vs APS-C… and we find out, that sensor size is not all that matters.

Also sensor technology is important. Canon has its own sensors, which are great in many ways (ie dual pixel AF), but have one shortcoming: they are not iso-less (or iso-invariant) as Sony sensors are (which are used by Fujifilm).

Here is a summary of the video (full video below):

Nikon Z50: the Lucrative Sub $1,000 APS-C Market Gets a New Competitor – Z50 vs Fujifilm X-T30 vs Sony A6400 vs Canon EOS M6 II

Nikon has launched the Nikon Z50.

Just like Sony (and unlike Canon and Fujifilm), Nikon decided to use the same mount for two different sensor size systems.

The Nikon Z50 is a direct competitor to the Fujifilm X-T30, a very successful camera for Fujifilm.

The lucrative sub $1,000 APS-C market is getting a new and strong competitor, and of course we customers all welcome that.

RUMOR: New Film Simulation Coming with Fujifilm X-Pro3… and to Fujifilm X-T3, X-T30 and GFX100 via Firmware Update?

Fujifilm X-Pro3

The Fujifilm X-Pro3 will come with a new film simulation.

I think this rumor will not only make future Fujifilm X-Pro3 owners happy, but also owners of Fujifilm X-T3, X-T30, GFX100, since those cameras share the same X Processor 4 and this could mean Fujifilm can update those cameras with this new film simulation.

TO BE CLEAR: I have no rumors that Fujifilm will update all X Processor 4 cameras with this new film simulation.

Recently Elia Locardi met Minami-San, Fujifilm’s color guru for the last 50 years. Minami-San developed the original Fujifilm film colors and is now responsible for the film simulation development. You can read the whole story here.
