Fujifilm Releases Kaizen Firmware Updates for Fujifilm GFX100, GFX50R and GFX50S

Fujifilm has released firmware updates for all their Fujifilm GFX cameras.

The firmware update Ver.2.00 from Ver.1.03 incorporates the following issues:

New Features Guide: English, Français, Deutsch, Español, Italiano, Nederland, Polski, Svenska, Norsk, Dansk, Pусский, Suomi, 中文简, 中文繁體, 한국어, ภาษาไทย, Arabic

Expanding the use of outstanding image technology based on unique color reproduction

1) Addition of the new Film Simulation modes below.
・“CLASSIC Neg” mode, simulating color negative film traditionally chosen for snapshots.
・“ETERNA Bleach Bypass” mode, which simulates the film processing technique of the same name.
2) “Color Chrome Blue”　is added, which adds depth to color and tonal reproduction in blue skies and other primarily blue subjects.
3) Additional functions of GRAIN EFFECT (SIZE, ROUGHNESS).

Improving autofocus performance

1) Fast and highly-accurate phase-detection AF even in low-light conditions at -5EV.
2) Improvement of the Face / Eye AF performance.
The face / eye detection accuracy and stability are improved when shooting multiple people, so as to make portrait photography easier than ever before.
3) Auto mode will be added to focus bracketing.
Specify the starting and ending points and shooting interval, and the camera can automatically determine the number of frames and steps required.

Enabling video recording control from Gimbal / Drone via USB communications

Combining the GFX100 with Gimbal / Drone that supports this function, will allow users to start / stop video recording, specify exposure settings for video (shutter speed, aperture value, ISO sensitivity and exposure compensation), and make manual focus adjustments.(*1)

3) “COMPRESSED” is added to RAW RECORDING.

Features RAW video data output to ATOMOS NINJA V field monitor-recorder(*6)

GFX100 will be able to output maximum 4K/29.97P(*7) 12bit RAW video data using HDMI to an ATOMOS NINJA V, in Apple ProRes RAW. New firmware for NINJA V will be released by ATOMOS. RAW video data gives maximum flexibility for exposure adjustment or color grading in post-production for professional videographers. Also, simultaneous output of RAW with Film Simulation / F-Log / Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) is also available.

*6:GFX100 can record ProRes RAW only with ATOMOS NINJA V (as of June 30th 2020).

Does current IBIS fit in Fujifilm X-T4? And GFX100 IBIS in GFX50R / 50S

Back in March 2018, I have used Fujifilm technical X-H1 IBIS scetches and put them into the Fujfiilm X-T2. See the article here.

The result was the image you see above.

It’s my pleasure to see that over one year later, the topic is coming up again (better late than never), so I am glad to share it again with you.

The Fujfilm X-T4, if it keeps the size of the X-T3 and X-T2, will have a hard time to fit IBIS into its body. But Fujifilm has repeated many times, that they are working to make IBIS smaller.

And since we talk IBIS…

I had a personal curiosity to see how the Fujifilm GFX100 IBIS unit fits in the Fujifilm GFX 50S and Fujifilm GFX 50R.

So I took the IBIS unit displayed at the Fujifilm GFX100 live stream event, and mounted it on the Fujifilm GFX50R/S.

As you can see below, the IBIS unit is too big for both cameras, but not by a large margin. So there is hope that, with further development, the next generation IBIS will be small enough to make it fit also in the GFX R and GFX S line of cameras.

Fujifilm GFX100 Size Comparisons

Fujifilm GFX 50R Roundup

Yes, I am a Fuji fanboy, otherwise I would not have opened FujiRumors in times, where many of you probably didn’t even knew that Fujifilm makes digital mirrorless cameras.

But this does not stop me from sharing everything, the good and the bad, that people say about Fujifilm.

In today’s roundup, 100% focused on the Fujifilm GFX 50R (which now costs $3,999 only!), I will share a huge amount of Fuji GFX50R reviews.

On the positive side, we notice the ePhotozine review, which highly recommends the Fujifilm GFX 50R and says:

“Delivering medium format image quality, the camera is a step up in performance compared to a full-frame DSLR or mirrorless camera, with excellent noise control, and exceptional levels of detail possible. […] the next step up in image quality […] Highly Recommended“

Also lensrentals is happy and says:

“Incredible price point for camera and exceptional image quality“

On the negative side, we can find Matt Granger’s review, who says it has the “worst ergonomics on any camera he ever used” and he is disappointed with its focus tracking capabilities. He does not recommend to buy this camera.

Matt has spoken very good about Fujifilm many times in the past, so do not start attacking him about being a Nikon/Sony fanboy or biased in any way. It’s just his opinion after having used the camera.

DPReview Declares Fujifilm X-T3 Best Consumer Stills/Video Camera 2018 and Fujifilm GFX50R Runner-Up High-End ILC

The Fujifilm X-T3 has been highly praised by all top review blogs and youtube channels out there. And if you take a look at the Fujifilm X-T3 customer reviews at AmazonUS you will also find overwhelmingly enthusiastic feedback.

Yes, the Fuji X-T3 a fantastic allrounder.

And now, after winning three categories in the DPReview buying guides, the DPReview team declared the Fujifilm X-T3 the best consumer stills/video camera of 2018, beating illustrious competitors like the Sony A7III, Fujifilm X-H1 and Nikon Z6.

DPReview writes:

“At first glance very similar to its direct predecessor the X-T2, this year’s model is in fact a major upgrade, offering a substantially improved set of video and stills features. In fact, despite its lack of IBIS, the 4K/60-capable X-T3 is arguably a better 4K video platform than the nominal video flagship of the X-series, the X-H1. Its ability to capture 4K/60p footage in 10-bit even puts it ahead of the latest models in Panasonic’s video-centric GH series.

All of this is made more impressive by the fact that until quite recently, Fujifilm’s X-series lagged seriously behind its competition in terms of video. The X-T3 is the clearest indication yet that Fujifilm has well and truly joined the game.”

The Sony A7III, though, beats the Fujifilm X-T3 in the “Best midrange ILC” category, with the Fujifilm X-T3 grabbing the second spot, beating the Canon EOS R and Nikon Z6.

DPReview also nominated the Sony A7III best product of 2018, with the Fujifilm X-T3 runner up. They write:

“Picking the single best product of the year is always a difficult task, and if we’re being honest, it’s impossible. Everyone’s needs are different. There has never been a better time to be a photographer, and in 2018 there are fantastic cameras, lenses and accessories out there for everyone.

But pick we must. This year’s shortlist is comprised of those products that represent, in our collective opinion, four of the best bits of gear released in 2018. Two of them really stood out, though. Runner-up is the Fujifilm X-T3 which – in case you didn’t already get the message – we really like. Fujifilm didn’t need to make the X-T3 as good as it is – hell, Fujifilm didn’t even need to replace the X-T2 yet – but they did, and they did. And the resulting camera is one of the best APS-C format ILCs money can buy, even rivaling some full-frame models.”

Compared to the Sony A7III, the Fujifilm X-T3 offers better weather sealing, less rolling shutter, less banding in electronic shutter mode, superior video specs, better EVF, better colors, dual UHS-II SD-card slot, video eye-tracking, blackout-less EVF at 30 fps and more for a cheaper price.

But, well, the Fujifilm X-T3 is not “full frame“, and these two little words just make the difference, probably more in our minds, than in real life shooting. But hey, that’s it. Now let’s talk medium format :).

Fujifilm GFX50R

When it comes to the best high-end ILC category, the Nikon Z7 wins and the Fujifilm GFX50R takes the second spot, beating the Panasonic GH5s and Panasonic G9.

“This year’s runner-up spot is taken by the camera with the biggest sensor of all – the Fujifilm GFX 50R. Designed for active photographers, the 50R takes the best bits of the more costly 50S – including its most important feature – the excellent 50MP CMOS sensor – and packages them in a smaller, more affordable, rangefinder-style body. Medium-format has never looked more attractive.”

The Fujifilm GFX50R owner’s manual is now available in html version and PDF version.

If you follow our fantastic Fujifilm GFX User Group, you will be able to chat with the first Fujifilm GFX50R owners out there, and enjoy their images.

At the moment it’s not that easy to find the Fuji GFX50R in stock. Adorama for example marked it as “backordered“.

I hear the demand for Fuji GFX50R is pretty good, and fulfilling all pre-orders might take longer than Fujifilm originally planed. So brace yourself with a bit of patience.
