10 days ago, the Japanese youtube channel カメラのキタムラ published two interviews with a Fujifilm manager talking about the Fujifilm X-T4.
Each video is 13 minutes long, and I didn’t understand a single word, so I had to rely on the automatic google translator tool, which also had its struggles.
But I went through it, and here are the things I think I could understand.
If some Japanese FR-reader has time, you can do a summary and share it in the comments below.
EOS M50: nice quality camera. Best grip. Wonderful touch screen interface
X-T200: beautiful. Very customizable. Feels cheap holding in the hands. No AF-ON button. Handles well, grip improved
A6100: same old design
Display
X-T200: similar EVF like Canon. 16:9 aspect ration LCD
EOS M50: best EVF. Fully articulating screen
A6100: too low res viewfinder. Fully articulating screen would have been better
Image Quality
X-T200: easy win. modern sensor. Very good ISO performance. Great Fujifilm JPEG. Fastest sensor scan rate
A6100: better high ISO than Canon. Rolling shutter issue
EOS M50: oldest sensor. 24MP. Slow scan rate
Autofocus
A6100: easy win. Sony’s eye and face AF is fantastic. Great tracking. Intuitive to use. Highest hit rate. You get the same advanced AF as their Pro bodies
EOS M50: dual pixel AF. Great touch screen interface. Sticky tracking
X-T200: much better than X-T100. But other cameras have a bit better interface. X-T200 has very short buffer
Video
X-T200: 16:9 flippy screen. You can monitor audio via USB-C adapter. Beautiful 4K and nice slow motion
A6100: best AF, usable 4K. Pretty severe rolling shutter. Screen tilt upwards. If you use microphone on hot shoe, it blocks the screen
EOS M50: 4K has huge crop and no longer dual pixel AF
Lenses
X-T200: Fujifilm continues to dominate in having the best and most lenses available. No big third party support, though. But probably there is not really the need for it. It’s hard for third party manufacturers to come and compete with a company, who makes very affordable zooms, affordable primes like the XC 35mm f/2, kit lenses are often better then some of the Pro lenses other manufacturers make. Lots of Pro lenses, too
EOS M50: opposite of Sony. No higher end lenses. You need an adapter and adapt EF lenses. Not much third party support. Canon has affordable good quality lenses for users starting out. The kit lens is way better than the Sony kit lens
Sony: lots of third party support. Excellent and expensive E mount lenses. But this is an entry level camera, and needs affordable lenses. Sony lacks of such lenses
Conclusion
X-T200: well deserved win. Great AF, excellent video, sexy body, very customizable, lenses, etc. It fixes all the issues they had with the X-T100
EOS M50: affordable, capable, versatile
A6100: lack of lenses. Not sexy cameras. Autofocus is great
So why did a rangefinder lover like me buy a SLR-styled camera with selfie flippy screen? And why not wait for Fujifilm X-H2? Here are 5 reasons:
I love dials: the Fujifilm X-H2 will have a top LCD screen. I prefer to have an exposure compensation dial… as many dials as possible. That’s what brought me into the Fujifilm X system, and that’s why I remain there. And I don’t care if the Fujifilm X-H2 has 43 megapixel and new processor. Ergonomics are more important than megapixel to me.
I love compactness: the Fujifilm X-H2 will have a massive grip. That’s great for many of you, but I like my cameras to be smaller (which is why I shoot also the amazing X-E3)
there is no hiding, I would have preferred a 3 way tilt screen. But then I thought, that I use the screen maybe 10% of the time, as I am total viewfinder fan. And in those 10% of the times, I will get used to flip that screen out. It still allows for portrait orientation (which the X-T100 screen does not). And it still allows for low and high angle shots. But again… my thought… I use the EVF anyway all the time. For the rest I will just keep it flipped inwards, like the “hidden screen” of the X-Pro3.
As you know I am a teacher, and I love making more and more videos with my students, as this is an extremely motivating activity for me and for the students. So far I filmed with my X-E3, or X-E2 (which I destroyed). Now it’s time to step up my game and get a camera with IBIS and serious video specs. At the beginning of June I will be on a 1 week school trip abroad called “settimana azzurra”, and I hope to have the X-T4 to document it.
The X-H1 was close to make it into my camera bag. But looking at the massive autofocus improvements on the X-T4, I just had to pass and get the Fujifilm X-T4.
So yes, I am in. I pre-ordered the Fujifilm X-T4. Now the long waiting begins, just like all of you guys, as I have absolutely no privileged contacts with Fujifilm.
Wait… you want to know which color? Well, make your guess in the comments. I will let you know later on ;).
J. said the tilt screen will be like the one of the Panasonic S1H.
But I noticed a tendecy on the web, to attribute to FR also the S1H alike rumor.
So I just want to clarify, that all FujiRumors sources told us only about a “selfie flippy screen”, but not which kind of selfie screen it will be. Will it be like on the Fujifilm X-T200, or like on Fujifilm X-T100, or like on the Panasonic S1H? At this point, we do not know. We just know vloggers will be happy about it :).
I thought I need to set this right, as I don’t want any reader to be mislead here.
For us, this post is also a welcome opportunity to ask you, which selfie flippy screen do you prefer, X-T200, X-T100 or Panasonic S1H? Vote down below.
Down below are three videos, they all start at the point, where you see the screen in action.
X-T100 screen: tiltable up and down still centered to camera body. You can flip it out in selfie mode
X-T200 screen: classic fully articulating screen. If you want to tilt up or down, you must move it out all the way on the side of the camera. No longer centered. But you can flip it inwards, to protect the screen
S1H screen: You can tilt it down still centered to the camera. And fully articulates when moved out on the side of the camera. You can flip it inwards towards camera body, for protection. It has a more bulky design, but allows to move the screen more away from the camera, potentially keeping it more far away from the cables you might have attached on the side of the camera body
Today I got my X-Pro3 back from Fuji Service with a new firmware update vers. 1.02. That update was actually released already on 16. January regarding the Fuji Website. But when you click on it you go to the vers. 1.01 that was released in December and the file is the same too.
I did check, and indeed, on the firmware list page, Fujifilm mentiones X-Pro3 firmware 1.02 as released on January 16. As you can see from the screenshot above, it says:
The phenomenon that in rare cases, a freeze could occur is fixed
But once you click and enter on the X-Pro3 firmware download page here, all you see is firmware 1.01.
My guess? Fujifilm will release another firmware update, maybe ver.1.1, which will incorporate the bug fixed with 1.02 as well as other issues.
Now, it’s not a surprise, that the Fujifilm X-T200 will be something like an X-A7 with viewfinder.
So expect sensor and processor of the Fujifilm X-A7.
However, there is something, that might be a bit more surprising.
I just got word (thanks), that the Fujifilm X-T200 will be launched with a vari-angle LCD screen, the one Fujifilm first introduced on the Fujifilm X-A7.
I looks like Fujifilm took note of our big tilt screen survey, where the X-A7 vari-anlge screen turned out to be much more popular than the (smart!) X-T100 screen, which you can see how it works here.
Personally I was always a big fan of the X-T100 screen, as it allows you to tilt the screen up and down and keep the LCD still centered to the camera, and still had a “selfie” position. Now with the X-A7 screen, whenever you want to tilt up and down, you’ll have to flip it out all the way to the side and off-centered to the camera.
But I am aware I am in the minority here. You guys want X-A7 screen, so Fujifilm delivers!
