Fujifilm X Summit September 20: Big Announcements, Cool Insights and New Lens/Firmware Roadmaps?

Fujifilm X Summit

Fujifilm just announced the Fujifilm X Summit for September 20 at 1PM GMT. This means it will take place at:

  • 9AM New York Time
  • 3PM Berlin Time

There will be a LIVE STREAMING here on FujiRumors.

Fujifilm writes about the event:

Following the first round in Dubai, we are pleased to announce that the second X Summit will be held on September 20th 1PM GMT!

This time, the X Summit will be held in Shibuya, Tokyo – the mecca of street photography in Tokyo. What will happen this time?

Make sure to tune in on September 20th.

Now, Fujifilm can’t tell you this, but of course they mean to stay tuned on FujiRumors for non stop real time coverage, just as we did last time back in February with the Dubai X Summit. ;)

So, make sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, RSS-feed, Youtube, Flipboard and Twitter.

What Will Happen?

Let’s take a look what Fujifilm did at the last Fujifilm X summit in Dubai:

  • they asked the Fujifilm community to vote on future lenses
  • they asked the Fujifilm community to vote on future firmware
  • they showed early Fujifilm GFX concepts, including a modular GFX
  • Fujifilm engineers talked about the X and GFX lenses and camera development
  • Fujifilm managers showed us mock-ups of future lenses such as the the XF33mmf/1.0
  • the showed a Fujifilm GFX100 prototype
  • they explained the Fujifilm color science approach
  • there was a Q&A with the community

That’s about it, and for a compact summary of the entire X Summit of February, just check out this article.

Now, you can see that Fujifilm actually did NOT announce any new gear at the last X summit, so chances are, that also this time we won’t get a full and final announcement of any new camera or lens.

In fact, our sources confirm that the final announcement with full specs and pre-orders for the Fujifilm X-Pro3 will happen on the second half of October.

However…

I know many of you are hoping to see a Fujifilm X-H2 or maybe a Fujifilm X-T3s with IBIS.

I have not heard about it, and if something like this comes, it was Fujifilm’s best kept secret ever. But yes, there is this third mysterious camera registered, and if it comes out 2019, then I honestly have no idea what it could be.

You guys, though, seem to be much more confident: you see high chances for a Fujifilm X-H2 or X100V (but X100V will surely come in 2020 only)

What can be expect more realistically?

Well, the main course of the meal could be other things, like:

Also, there will be several Fujifilm managers to go on stage and give us technical insights, disclose further projects, show even more mock-ups and more. Also gifted photographers like Bert Stephani, David Hobby and Tomasz Lazar will be there.

One Thing is Sure!

One thing is sure:

September 20 will be a very exciting day for the Fujifilm community, and my fast fingers will cover the event at 360° non stop, to make sure you at home don’t miss a single tidbit.

Photons to Photos: Fujiflm GFX100 vs Sony a7rIV Dynamic Range and Other FULL FRAME Compared

Photons to Photos added the Sony a7rIV to their database, and you can now compare it to all other cameras, including the Fujifilm GFX100.

The new Sony a7rIV performs slightly worse at high ISO, but that’s not surprising, giving the higher resolution.

I decided to compare the Fujifilm GFX100 with the following full frame cameras: Sony a7rIV, Nikon Z7, Panasonic S1R, Sony A7rIII and Canon EOS R.

You can manipulate the chart here.

Fujifilm GFX 100 Cartoon Published: Fuji’s Counterattack to Sony’s Marketing Consisting in Flying Influencers to Events Around the World

Fujifilm just decided to use its social media platform, in this case Weibo, to promote the Fujifilm GFX100 with a mini cartoon you can see here.

I guess the message is about preserving memories with the Fujifilm GFX100, print those pictures and to show why we love photography.

“Maybe you forgot, but the photos are still there!”

Ok Fuji, nice, really.

But besides that, do it also like Sony and just fly every charismatic youtube influencer around the world to nice events. I have the feeling that this would work as good marketing, too.

Sure, it’s not as romantic and nice as a cartoon about the love to photography, but I have the feeling it would be very efficient marketing.

Three Fujifilm Cameras Registered, But When Will they Come? Time Span Between Fujifilm X/GFX Registrations and Announcement

Fujifilm has recently registered three cameras:

The inevitable question that pops up in the comments when this happens, is how long the time span is between registration of a camera and its announcement.

To answer that, I looked back to the past time span between registrations and announcements, and here is what we see:

  • 1 month = 4 cameras (X-T2, X-E3, X-T100, X-T30)
  • 2 months = 3 cameras (X-T20, X100F, XF10)
  • 3 months = 3 cameras (X-T3, GFX50R, GFX100)
  • 6 months = 1 camera (X-H1)

It’s clear that we usually get a camera between 1 and 3 months after registration (with exception of X-H1, which needed 6 months).

Clearly this would indicate of 3 cameras coming within November, although the X-H1 shows that a longer wait is not impossible, hence an announcement within February 2020 (6 months).

What could these cameras be?

The contact form on FujiRumors is open for any hint (thanks), and the comments for the wildest speculations :).

The Fujifilm GFX100 is surely a game changer for the medium format world, and as such the coverage is massive (and sales are excellent).

I had the pleasure to shoot with it, and I can fully understand the hype, and I think it deserves all the best success.

Fujifilm Officially Recommends to Turn On OIS for Tripod Use on Fujinon XF 16-80mm F4 and XF 200mm F2

Best Friends: OIS and Tripod

We have all grown up with the idea (some call it “myth”), that we always should turn off OIS when working on a tripod.

Also Fuji X guru Rico Pfirstinger recommends this in his top rated Fuji X eBooks (at least the ones I have read).

And indeed, I feel like it’s still a good idea to switch off OIS. And in the comments Bob Cooley tells you why you should definitely switch it off for video.

But, looking at the owner’s manuals for all X and G mount lenses, I’ve noticed that Fujifilm officially recommends to keep OIS on, even when working on a tripod, on the following two lenses:

The Photography Community is Toxic? The Fujifilm X Cure in this Fun Image Roundup!

A couple of influencers have recently published videos and blog posts, saying that the photography community is toxic.

Well, I don’t notice such a toxicty here on FujiRumors. Maybe, as also Hugh Brownstone said here, most Fujifilm shooters are just more on the cooler side of life. So I am lucky to have you guys on board ;).

I just allow myself to notice, that sometimes it’s the influencer, who provokes and clickbaits people. So don’t just blame people, who comment, for toxicity. Always first ask yourself, if the way you share your content is maybe good for clicks, but leads inevitabily to strong reactions.

With all that said, FujiRumors is on a mission: bring lightness and fun back into the photography community.

And how do we do that?

Well, in the good old Fuji X shooter style: using the power of the images!

So, if you have just been irritated by somebody, who does not get it how to convert focal lengths from FF and MF, or who claims that APS-C is dead and only full frame is for Pros, I hope that these images can put a little smile back on your face.

Turth is: sometimes we might hit hard on each other in the comments, but if we would sit together on a beer, we would discover that there is so much more that unites us than what divides us, no matter if you shoot APS-C, Fuji, Sony, CaNikon, Full Frame, Pentax, GFX or whatever: we are united by the passion for photography.

Take it easy,
Patrick
