Sigma Joins Fujifilm X Mount with 16mmF1.4, 30mmF1.4 and 56mmF1.4 AF Lenses – First Looks, Samples and Pre-Orders

So, Sigma has finally done it, and announced their first autofocus lenses for Fujifilm X mount.

Just as FujiRumors already told you a couple of weeks now, the lenses are the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN, the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN and the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN. Sadly this little fantastic Sigma APS-C mirrorless lens is not yet included in their starting Sigma X mount offering.

Compared: Sigma 16mmF1.4 vs Fujinon XF16mmF1.4, Sigma 30mmF1.4 vs XF33mmF1.4 and Sigma 56mmF1.4 vs XF56mmF1.2

We told you regarding the upcoming X mount Sigma lenses, that we don’t believe they will suffer the same faith of the X mount Zeiss Touit Trinity.

The main reason: the Zeiss Touit X lenses were more expensive than their Fujinon XF counterparts but did not offer a better image quality that would justify the price jump.

On the other hand, the Sigma X mount lenses will come in at a sensibly lower price tag than their Fujinon XF competitors and probably at the same time offer a very good image quality, too.

Well, today I’d like to go a bit more in depth and compare also some of the other specs thanks to the very useful B&H Photo comparison tool.

Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN vs Fujinon XF16mm f/1.4 R WR

  • the Sigma is 55% more affordable than the Fujinon lens
  • the Fujinon is 7.5% lighter than the Sigma
  • the Fujinon has better close focus distance capability (15cm vs 25cm)
  • full specs comparison here (filter size, optical design etc)

Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN vs Fujinon XF33mm f/1.4 R LM WR

  • the Sigma is 58% more affordable than the Fujinon lens
  • the Sigma is 26% lighter than the Fujinon
  • both have the same close focus distance capability (30cm)
  • full specs comparison here (filter size, optical design etc)

Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN vs Fujinon XF56mm f/1.2 R

  • the Sigma is 52% more affordable than the Fujinon lens
  • the Sigma is 31% lighter than the Fujinon
  • the Sigma has better close focus distance capability (50cm vs 70cm)
  • full specs comparison here (filter size, optical design etc)

Given the gentle price and probably also the great performance, I believe the Sigma X mount lenses could potentially be an attractive option for many Fuji X shooters.

What I believe could be the biggest “deal breaker” is not that they are too close to existing Fujinon lenses, but that all the Sigma lenses mentioned above do not have an aperture ring, which is something many of us love and consider a key part of the Fuji X shooter experience.

At least for me it’s like this, so much so that I sold my original XF27mmF2.8 to get the new XF27mmF2.8 R WR just to have an aperture ring on the lens.

But other than that, I am happy Sigma joins the X mount with whatever lenses they want and I look forward to more in future.

Expected Price and Specs of Upcoming Fujifilm X Mount Sigma 16mmF1.4, 30mmF1.4 and 56mmF1.4 DC DN Contemporary

FujiRumors already informed you that the upcoming Sigma X mount autofocus lenses will be:

  1. Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary
  2. Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary
  3. Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary

Since not everybody is familiar with the Sigma system, and I already started to receive emails asking me if these were new lenses (pretty much as the Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 was when it was launched for X mount), I feel I need to clarify that these Sigma DC DN lenses already exist for other mirrorless mounts.

So first here is a mini Sigma abbreviation guide:

  • DC: lenses designed for APS-C
  • DN: lenses designed for mirrorless
  • Contemporary: Featuring the very latest technology, and combining optical performance with compactness

The price range for the above mentioned lenses (for other mounts) goes from $339 to $479 depending on the lens and it remains consistent across the various mount options.

Hence, it is safe to assume that also the Fujifilm X mount version will cost about the same and also have basically the same specs.

There is one more DC DN lens in the Sigma range, the new and lovely Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN, but if my sources are accurate, this lens will not be part of the Sigma X mount launch party. However, it should not break Sigma’s bank to offer that one for X mount too at a later stage. So let’s hope for that (not a rumor, just a hope of mine).

SIZE COMPARISON: Fujinon XF18mmF1.4 vs XF16mmF1.4 vs XF23mmF1.4

Just as we rumored, Fujifilm included the Fujinon XF18mmF1.4 on the official new X mount roadmap.

I took the technical sketch of the upcoming XF18mmF1.4 that Fujifilm showed us at the recent Fujifilm X summit and used it to compare its size to its closest internal f/1.4 competitors, the Fujinon XF16mm f/1.4 and the XF23mm f/1.4.

The result can be seen above.

Based on what Fujifilm provided us, we can say that the size will be basically identical to the one of the Fujinon XF16mm f/1.4.

If you want to see the size comparison between the Fujinon XF70-300mmF4-5.6 and other Fujinon lenses, check out this article.

DPReviewTV Fujinon XF 8-16mm f/2.8: “Optically Fantastic, but for Most People the Fujinon XF 10-24mm F4 is a Better Choice”

DRPreview TV reviewed the Fujinon XF 8-16mm f/2.8. Here are their findings:

  • professional line of Fujinon lenses
  • well-built, heavy and expensive
  • well suited for cameras like Fujifilm X-H1
  • manual focus ring feels sloppy
  • no OIS, but it’s typical for lenses in this range. But they miss it anyway, unless used on X-H1 with IBIS
  • XF 10-24 more well suited for lighter bodies and has OIS
  • no filter threads, typical for lenses that wide
  • powerful autofocus motors. Fast and accurate
  • coma very well corrected, excellent for astrophotography and cityscape
  • vignetting and distortion very well corrected
  • sunstars are not bad, but not the best they have seen
  • close focusing is similar to the XF10-24 (9 feet)
  • XF8-16 optically fantastic, very sharp
  • 8mm at f/2.8 a little bit weird in the corners, but stopping down cleans up beautifully
  • wide open it is sharper than the XF10-24, but stopped down difference gets smaller
  • It’s admirable that Fujifilm gives us lenses that give us full frame equivalent look, like the Sony 12-24mm f/4 G
  • the Sony 12-24 is lighter and $300 cheaper
  • if you want FF look in APS-C, you are not going to save money
  • for most people, the XF 10-24mm F4 is a better choice, since landscape you stop down anyway
  • XF 8-16mm F2.8 is a niche lens
