Anonymous source says the XF 90mm F2 will come in July and be “Fujinon at its best!”

 photo k_zpsxbc6jzs7.jpg

An anonymous source (with nick-name) just shared with us the following rumor: the XF 90mm F2 will come in July.

The source also claims it had the opportunity to see some samples taken with a prototype circulating in the US and says it is “Fujinon at its best. Probably best XF prime!”

I remind you that Fuji Guy Greg said to BigHeadTaco here that it will be weather sealed.

INTERVIEWS: X-PRO2: “We need more New Technologies!” X100S: “No More FW Updates!” 2x converter “Could come!”

 photo chall_zps60k38jog.jpg

Time for another series of interviews with Fujifilm Managers… let’s start with the main points in the one imaging-resource had with Makoto Oishi from the Sales & Marketing Division, Optical Device & Electronic Imaging Products Division.

4K:”Currently, our X-Trans CMOS II [sensor] cannot realize 4K videos because it has a smaller number of pixels, like 16-megapixel. Also, if we [want to] realize 4K video, the sensor itself should have much faster reading speed.”

I remind you that our trusted Japanese source confirmed a few weeks ago, that Fuji’s plans are to make the X-PRO2 4K capable.

X100S firmware: “While we have provided firmware upgrades for the X100S many times, now we have the X100T, we’re finished, no firmware upgrades [for the X100S] anymore.”

Frankly disappointing, if true. I can understand that they hold on with the FW release, since the X100T is relatively new, and a new X100S firmware would probably influence negatively the sales… but on the long term Fuji must update the X100S. X100S owners are a VERY important part for Fuji’s success, so they deserve an update. At least Classic Chrome… David Hobby himself said here to have used it on his X100S… so why not all the other X-shooters too?

X-PRO2: “But if we launched an X-Pro, we’d need more new technologies, and we’re still developing and investigating. Especially the new devices like the processor or sensor, we’re still preparing.”

There is more to read at imaging-resource, for example about the gyro sensor used for the OIS in the 50-140. A technology missing in the 16-55… and in another interview at fujifilm-blog another manager (Mr Soga, the man responsible for the lens roadmap) explains the true reason for the lack of OIS: it’s not about size, it’s not about costs… it’s about IQ at the wide end (16mm)! He says:

OIS needs to move the lens inside to compensate for camera shake and as a result can cause loss of resolution in the edges of the image. In long zoom lens such as the XF50-140mmF2.8, the angle of view is narrow enough to not show this negative effect of OIS in the edges. However, the angle of view of the XF16-55mm, when set to the widest setting, is large enough for OIS to affect resolution at the edge of the image. Considering this trade-off, because we wanted this zoom lens to start wide at 16mm and F2.8, and we wanted to best edge-to-edge quality throughout the entire zoom range, we decided to not employ OIS.”

Mr. Soga also confirms that teh XF 35mmF2 will have faster focussing and “we may create a 2x converter in the future although this has not been confirmed.”

Dpreview posted some hands on photos will all the unreleased lenses in the roadmap… and some information:

XF 35mmF2: faster AF than the 35mmF1.4 – weather sealing not confirmed – available last quarter of 2015
XF 120mmF2.8: will have OIS – WR still unconfirmed –  focus limiter – available 2016… and I can’t see any tripod mount in the pictures
XF 16mmF1.4: coming soon – AF speed similar to 23mmF1.4
XF 100-400: not the final design

I repost also an updated version of the new roadmap. In the previous versions there was a bit of confusion, because Fujifilm ordered the lenses from left to right according to their focal length, and not their estimated release time… making the time indication much more vague. Well, now in this roadmap, you can see the lenses ordered more clearly, this means with the horizontal position showing the release time.

So we can see that:

XF 16mmF1.4 & XF 90mmF2 should come in the first half of 2015
– XF 35mmF2 somewhere around next fall (right in time for the X-PRO2??)
– XF 100-400 early 2016
– XF 120mmF2.8 1:1 Macro around spring 2016

 photo asasaaaag_zpsv4qkuiiv.jpg

FujifilmXworld published another teaser of the unreleased lenses. This time it’s about the big brother of the XF 60mmF2.4.

XF Lens has the half macro lens XF60mmF2.4 R and recently added macro extension tube in the lineup. And we will soon have the 1:1 Macro lens XF120mmF2.8 R Macro as the latest addition.
This lens will be like a big brother of XF60mm, and XF60mm has the highest resolution capability among any XF lenses, so you can expect a lot from this lens. Start counting days for the release in 2016.”

The Spanish site dslrmagazine (translation) had the opportunity to take some shots with the Fujifilm XM-FL Filter Lens Cap (officilly announced here, price around $90). It includes full size JPEGs.

Over at the Japanese site dc.watch you can find some more images of the new lenses. You want see nothing really new compared to the set of images shared yesterday. But it’s funny to see the big 16-55 mounted on the selfie X-A2… and the a cut of the 16-55 and 50-140.

There is also another high-res image of the upcoming lenses, spotted by FR-reader DIS. You can clearly see that the 90mmF2 is not marked as “Weather Resistant”, although Fuji Guy Greg said that it would be weather resistant. To know more about, check out this post.

FujiXseriesJapan shared the first images of the 120mmF2.8 1:1 Macro (with OIS, focus-limiter and also WR!), XF 100-400,  XF 35mmF2, XF 16mmF1.4, XF 90mmF2 and 1.4 Teleconverter.

– XF 16mmF1.4 : WR & Clutch mechanism – filter 67mm
– XF 35mmF2 : WR – filter 43mm
– XF 90mmF2 : no WR (???) & no OIS  – filter 62mm [admin: Fuji Guy Greg said it will be weather sealed] – XF 120mmF2.8 macro : focus-limiter, WR & OIS (!!!) – filter 62mm
– XF 100-400 : can’t read any information

ONLINE: New Fuji Lens Catalogue. Shows new XC OIS II lenses + Some details about upcoming XF lenses (with POLL)

 photo specs_zps070500eb.jpg

Fujifilm updated its lens catalogue (download here). It now includes the new XC 16-50 and 50-230 OIS II lenses and shows also the 16mmF1.4, 90mmF2 and 140-400mmF4-5.6 lenses.

Fuji has shown mock-ups of the 16, 90 and 140-400 in the past, and in this catalogue we can’t really see more specs about them than already known. You can get an idea of the size of these lenses compared to other Fujinons (size can change until their release, though).

FR-reader Jonavin made a list (published after the poll) with all his findings after looking at the catalogue. And I agree with Markus, who wrote an email saying: “Fuji is bringing all the right stuff. ” :-)

But tell us, of the three lenses, which is the one you are waiting for more than any other?

Between the Fujifilm X100F and X-E3, I would buy the...

XF 140-400mm
– looks like f/4-5.6
– size, it’s as tall as the XF50-140 but a lot beefier/thicker; and no doubt heavier
– filter size?  probably 82mm [86 according to FR-reader The Green Balbo] – Nano GI coating

Fuji’s first half 2015 (rumored) X-gear roadmap: 2 new X-series cameras, 1 more lens and a new flash!

 photo rumorroadmap_zps7e662a5f.jpg

Do you remember 2013, when Fujifilm released the X100S, X20, X-M1, X-A1, X-E2, XQ1, XF 14mm, XF 55-200mm, XF 27mm, XF 23mm, XC 50-230mm and XC 16-50mm? Well, times seem to be over, when Fujifilm frantically released X-gear after X-gear in order to build up an entire system from zero.

Maybe in 2015 we won’t see such an avalanche of new products as in 2013… but it could nevertheless be very interesting year, especially because…

… because of the Fujiflm X-PRO2. All the eyes (especially mine ;-) ) are focused on it. However, I try to keep my radar finely tuned also on the rest of possible Fuji X-gear.

So I’ve summed up rumors shared here on Fujirumors, focusing, for now, on the first half of 2015.

I did NOT include the X-PRO2 in the first half of 2015 list because, at the moment, release dates are simply too contradictory. They go from early or first half 2015 to second quarter and even to fall 2015 (at least they all say 2015 :-) ). I’ll wait for trusted sources to find out the facts and will then post an update with the release date.

And of course, you can help my rumor sleuthing by sharing your knowledge. Just contact FR at fujirumor [at] gmail [dot] com (with fake email account, if you want), or 100% anonymously via rumor box (possibly with nick-name, so that I can eventually recognize you in future).

First half 2015 rumored X-gear

I think that CP+ this year (February 12 to 15) could be way more interesting than the CES. So what could come in these first 6 months? Here is the list:

2 new X-series cameras:

  • an entry-level camera: my personal guess, X-A1/X-M1 replacement/successor (trusted source – read rumor here)

  • a fixed lens camera (Anonymous Source – read rumor here). There were rumors in the past about an X70 (read rumor here), an entry level version of the X100 series with 23mm f/2.8 lens. It was definitely in Fuji’s plans in 2013, but such plans were dropped later on (information of trusted source). I have NOT heard of a comeback of the X70 until now, but it’s the only fixed lens camera I have heard about in the past. However, it could well be a completely new camera… if the anonymous source is right, of course.

X-T1, XF50-140mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR, Lightroom

Hello again!

Yesterday, I brought you a comparison of the XF56mm lens and the new APD version. Today, Fujifilm officially announced its latest high-end general purpose zoom lens, the XF16-55mmF2.8 R LM WR, which is covering the popular 24-84mm full-frame equivalent.

This lens is quite substantial. It’s also fast, expensive and weather resistant, and it doesn’t feature any kind of optical image stabilization (OIS). So better use a tripod or shoot with faster shutter speeds.

X-T1, XF16-55mmF2.8 R LM WR, Lightroom

It’s no secret that the majority of Fujirumors readers voted for OIS in this lens, but it seems like Fuji is okay with selling it to the minority who’s happy without OIS. Or maybe we’ll see a “Mark II” version with built-in OIS in a year or two?

X-T1, XF16-55mmF2.8 R LM WR, Lightroom

It would have been possible to include OIS in this lens, but according to my Fuji sources, this would have resulted in an even larger, heavier and more expensive product. Alternatively, image quality would have suffered. So this lens appears to be a compromise of many things—except for image quality.

X-T1, XF16-55mmF2.8 R LM WR, Lightroom

The XF16-55mmF2.8 R LM WR is a well-built lens (anything else would be an insult) with snappy, silent autofocus. It also features Fuji’s new Nano-GI coating that was introduced in the XF50-140mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR. Excluding protection caps and the (plastic) lens hood, the zoom weighs 655 grams, which is still bearable. I recommend using an additional grip on your camera, though. For the X-T1, I prefer the vertical battery grip.
