FINAL COUNTDOWN: Fujifilm X Summit Starts Soon – What we Expect, What Not and What We Hope

The Fujifilm X summit in Omiya is about to start (October 15 at 9AM New York Time).

Feel free to stay tuned on FujiRumors, where we will cover the event live.

Thanks to our sources and past leaks on FujiRumors, we have a pretty clear idea what could happen. But it’s possible that there will be surprises, too.

So let’s run over it and see what we expect, what not and what we hope.

Pre-Order Open Very Soon!

WHAT WE EXPECT

WHAT WE DON’T EXPECT

  • New Fujifilm GFX camera – according to our sources, it won’t happen until early 2021… and it will be pure awesomeness :)
  • Fujifilm X-E4 – expected for early 2021
  • We don’t expect any full announcement for the following lenses: XF18mmF1.4, XF70-300mmF4.5.6, XF27mmF2.8 MKII and GF80mmF1.7

WHAT WE HOPE

To be clear, there are no rumors I have in this case. This is just a mere wishlist of mine.

  • Firmware announcement also for other X series cameras (besides X-T3)
  • Firmware update release announcement for Fujifilm GFX100 pixel shift
  • Fujinon G mount lens roadmap – it would be high time for a new one
  • Protoypes Show – in past editions, Fujifilm showed some camera and lens prototypes/concepts. Would be fantastic if they would show us some also this time

WHAT IS SURE

Sure is, we are going to have a lot of fun today… so definitely follow us here on FujiRumors ;)

Fujifilm X-S10: Attack on SONY (& Co), Why it is NOT an X-T40/X-H10 and VOTE NOW if You Like it or Not

The Vintage Departure

The debate initially fired up when I accurately described you the Fujifilm X-S10, and was then fueled up again when the X-S10 images leaked.

In short: that ain’t’ really that retro-feel we all fell in love with, right?

Indeed, if you are one of those, who grabbed a Fujifilm because of its vintage manual control layout, with dedicated ISO, shutter and exposure compensation dial, then the X-S10 ain’t for you.

But I really believe Fujifilm needed this camera, and it’s a brilliant move that they made it exactly like this.

Why the X-S10 was Urgently Needed

Fujifilm X-S10 IBIS Unit Significantly Smaller than X-T4 IBIS Unit

Some guys out there think that the Fujifilm X-S10 will have the same IBIS of the Fujifilm X-T4.

I contacted my sources about it, and this is the answer I’ve just received:

The IBIS unit on the X-S10 is NOT the same we find on the X-T4. It is actually significantly smaller than the one we find on the X-T4. As a matter of fact, it’s Fuji’s smallest IBIS unit ever made (ok, if we don’t count this one ;) )

Remember, shrinking IBIS is one of the top priorities identified by top Fujifilm manager Toshihisa Iida (who now left the imaging division) in a recent interview. And they seem to proceed very well with this.

Fuji really went a long way from that day back in 2016 when they said IBIS is not compatible with Fujifilm X mount to 2020, when they are able to squeeze a 5axis 6 stops IBIS in a camera as small as the Fujifilm X-S10.

FINALLY!!! Fujifilm X-S10 Full AUTO Mode will Capture also RAW files

LEFT: AUTO mode on X-T30 *** RIGHT: X-S10 mockup by FujiRumors (not real camera)
LEFT: AUTO mode on X-T30 *** RIGHT: X-S10 mockup by FujiRumors (not real camera)

Oh boy, I am complaining about this since at least two years already, and finally Fujifilm listened.

The issue?

When you shoot full AUTO, the camera records only JPEG files.

Some say this makes sense, as the AUTO mode is supposed to make it all for you and simplify your life.

And although I never shoot AUTO on my X-E3, it happens sometimes that I handle the camera to a friend or relative (or even to one of my little students). And since they are not familiar with photography, the AUTO switch comes in very handy.

The problem: it will write only JPEG files on the SD card. But even if it’s not me taking the pictures, it’s still my camera and my SD-Card, and I want always both, RAW and JPEG on my SD-card, as you never know, maybe there is some nice image there that could need a little tweak.

Also, here is another example a FR-reader made, and that shows how useful RAW capability in Full AUTO would be.

The FR-reader did set up the camera for long exposures, all full manual, and suddenly a beautiful bird came and rested shortly on a stone nearby. Without messing around with the settings, the FR-reader quickly switched the camera to AUTO and grabbed a picture of the bird before it flew away. And while in this case the Auto mode allowed him to capture the decisive moment, he would have loved to have the RAW file of that image too.

I strongly hope other Fujifilm cameras having the AUTO capabilities will get the AUTO-RAW capability via firmware update in near future. It would make the AUTO mode more useful for me.

And let’s hope they will adress also my other two big firmware complaints I have.

Fujifilm X-S10: Fuji’s First Mid-Range Camera with a Deep Grip

Fujifilm X-S10 mockup by FujiRumors (not the real camera)
Fujifilm X-S10 mockup by FujiRumors (not the real camera)

According to our sources, the Fujifilm X-S10 will have a nice deep grip, which I know many of you will love to hear.

It will be Fuji’s first mid-range camera with a deep grip, as the X-E3 and the X-T30, but also the X-T200 and X-A7, have none to very small grips only.

The only other Fujifilm X series camera with a deep grip is the Fujifilm X-H1.

Tony Northrup – Who Will Survive the Mirrorless War? Fujifilm is Safe, but Tony Keeps Doing One Error (With Respect to Tony)

Tony and Chelsea Northrup have updated their mirrorless predictions.

In short, they are most optimistic about Canon and Sony and they also think that Fujifilm is here to stay. About Fujifilm they say:

  • Fujifilm stock are doing great (unlike Nikon stock, which saw a massive long term drop)
  • loyal fanbase
  • when you get used to a Fuji and switch to something else, that something else feels ugly. Fun to shoot Fuji
  • X-T3 sales are really strong
  • Fujifilm said the camera division needs to justify itself with profits
  • cameras are 16% of overall Fujifilm company revenue
  • X-T4 is $1,600. But there are full frame cameras that are same price or cheaper (Nikon Z5 and Canon RP)
  • Fuji should improve AF
  • Fuji has less lens development than other camera brands
  • Tony says Fuji will stay in game and is not worried about its future
  • Fuji will gain market share as Panasonic and Olympus will leave camera industry
  • there will be lots of firmware updates and there will be a smaller GFX100

This is perfectly in line with the mirrorless shipment data we recently published, where Sony, Canon and Fujifilm are on top.

Fujifilm X-S10 Coming with X-T4 alike Selfie Screen

You guys are really getting better ;).

When we shared the first rumors of the upcoming Fujifilm X-S10, many of you predicted it would have a selfie screen (or let’s call it “vary-angle screen“, which sounds more “professional“).

Well, you were absolutely right.

The Fujifilm X-S10 will indeed have a selfie screen, and to be more precise, the X-T4 selfie screen (not the unique X-T100 screen).

In my opinion, unless you shoot selfie video/photos, the 3-way tilt screen of the X-T3 is the better way to go, as it will always stay nicely centered to your camera and never go in the way of your strap (I wrote about how annoyed I am that my Peak Design strap always covers the X-T4 selfie screen when I tilt it out).

Yep, you can tilt the X-T4 screen inwards to protect the LCD, but a ridiculously cheap X-T4 screen protector will do the same job.

The real advantage of the selfie screen is one, and only one: when tilted inwards, the camera looks even more vintage. And I like that :).

But if you stand behind the camera, and not in front, a regular 3-way tilt screen is just better.

To be fair, as a teacher during COVID-19 times, I must admit the selfie screen on my X-T4 served me very well. But if it wasn’t for that, I’d see no point in selfie screens.
