Digital Camera Market Share 2019: Canon is King, Fujifilm Stable 4th, Nikon is Falling, Olympus is Out

You might remember, how back in 2019 we reported Techno System Research data (a major marketing research company located in Japan) regarding the global mirrorless camera market share. We saw that Fujifilm was on an impressive 3rd position, very close to Canon. Check it out here.

Now Techno System Research has published the data regarding the digital camera market share (hence DSLR and Mirrorless combined). The data takes into account the 14.8 million cameras sold last year (2019).

As to expect, the ranking changes quite a bit compared to the mirrorless only data.

  • Canon: 45,4% (+2.4%)
  • Sony: 20.2% (+0.9%)
  • Nikon: 18.6% (-1.6%)
  • Fujifilm: 4.7% (-0.4%)
  • Panasonic: 4.7% (0.0%)

Nikon lost its Nr.2 position and sees the biggest market share loss of the top 5 companies. Olympus is out of the ranking, replaced on the 5th position by Panasonic. Sony dominates mirrorless, but DSLR sales are still high and keep Canon first.

And Fujifilm?

Well, Fujifilm stayed rather stable on the 4th position, with a 0.4% market share decrease. Not sure if we should rejoice, because they found their safe niche, or worry that they didn’t gain market share.

Also interesting to note: the digital camera market saw a year-to-year decrease of about 20% in 2019 and also in 2018.

New Fujifilm Financial Results: X-T4/X100V Sales Increasing Despite Severe Market Challenges, but Imaging Solution Down 33%

Fujifilm has just published the financial results for the first quarter of this fiscal year (1 April 2020 to 30 June 2020).

Here is what Fujifilm writes in its report about the imaging solution:

Imaging Solutions

In the Imaging Solutions segment, consolidated revenue amounted to ¥49.8 billion (down 33.2% from the same period of the previous fiscal year). The sales of products and services in general decreased due to impacts of stay-at-home orders, business shutdowns including temporary closure of retailers, and self-restraintor cancellation of events worldwide under the spread of COVID-19 pandemic. Consolidated operating loss amounted to ¥3.0 billion. […]

In the electronic imaging field of the optical device and electronic imaging business, temporary closure of retailers and less opportunities to take photos due to the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a decline in revenue. The sales of FUJIFILM X100V, a high-end model of compact digital camera launched in February 2020 and FUJIFILM X-T4, a mirrorless digital camera highly known for its high-speed AF and high video performance, launched in April 2020, are steadily increasing, despite the digital camera industry is facing severe challenges. We will continue providing value-added products and revitalizing the market, along with sharing the joy of taking photos.

In the optical device field, revenue decreased, reflecting a decline in demand for broadcast and cinema lenses, as well as reduced sales in vehicle-mounted lenses due to stagnation in automotive industry. With an aim to accelerate business growth, we are expanding business fields by developing and launching innovative products that satisfy changing needs of the market, such as ultra-short throw projectors and long throw security cameras.

Fujinon XF30mmF1.0, XF35mmF1.0 and XF33mmF1.0 Patents Spotted and Fujinon XF 50mmF1.0 Coming Soon

Finally, 5+ years after our original Fujinon XF33mmF1.0 rumor, the patent for that lens has now been spotted by hi-lows-note.blog (via j-platpat.inpit.go.jp).

And not only that!

It looks like Fujifilm looked into slightly different variations of that super-fast lens, more precisely:

XF35mmF1.0
Focal length: 34.686 mm
F number: 1.03
Angle of view: 45.4

XF30mmF1.0
Focal length: 30.369 mm
F number: 1.03
Angle of view: 51.0

XF33mmF1.0
Focal length: 33.489 mm
F number: 1.03
Angle of view: 46.8

As you know, back in 2018 Fujifilm officially added the Fujinon XF33mmF1.0 to the lens roadmap, but later on in 2019, Fujifilm officially canceled plans for the Fujinon XF33mmF1.0 in favor of the Fujinon XF50mmF1.0 for the reasons we already elaborated in this article.

As we could see in a live stream youtube video we reported about here, the Fujinon XF50mmF1.0 is out for Beta testing, meaning Fujifilm will be able to respect the original timeline, hence be able to release this lens within 2020.

From the first sample visible during the live stream, I can confidently say that an impressive lens is coming our way.

If it was really more needed than a Fujinon XF33mmF1.0, given the fact that we already have (and I personally own), the stunning Fujinon XF56mmF1.2, that’s up to you to decide.

For sure, the Fujinon XF50mmF1.0 will incorporate the smoothest and best autofocus, it will be weather sealed, hence addressing two of the major complaints with the XF56mmF1.2.

Plus, the XF50mmF1.0 will be priced surprisingly well, and this is why I believe, that Fujifilm is about to drop a real winner.

WELCOME and Meet the New Official Fujifilm Creators

Back in July, Fujifilm announced significant changes in their Fujifilm X Photographers program, including an explanation on the 3 step on how you can become an official Fujifilm X photographer.

If you want to know all the details, check out this article.

Now the first Fujifilm Creators have been selected, and Fujifilm welcomes them in a dedicated page here.

I thought that maybe also the FujiRumors community would like to give them a warm welcome and check out their work at the fujifilm-x page here.

Congratz guys, and keep the Fujifilm flag flying high out there :)

LIVE NOW: Fujinon XF50mmF1.0 Beta Tester Shows First Sample Images

UPDATE: the video live stream has been interrupted

Youtuber John Branch has a live stream now, where he said the images were taken with a lens he can’t talk about. The samples look stunningly creamy and have all the pop you can desire ;).

Turns out that, when he scrolled over his images, the metadata shows “Fujinon XF50mmF1.0 R WR”.

Looks like the beta testing phase has started. And no wonder, as Fujifilm promised this lens to come within 2020.

FujiRumors has already leaked the estimated price, which you can find here.

The live stream can be found below.

What’s the point of these posts?

Well, surely not to tell you “look, this famous guy shoots Fuji, so you should too“. For that purpose, it might be more convincing to know, that photographers using Fujifilm X cameras creamed off all (!!!), top awards at the recent World Press Photo Awards.

I guess the point of these posts, is just to share little curiosities, because I have fun collecting these things, and if it’s fun for me, it helps me to run FujiRumors with even more joy. So, in case you are not interested, just skip these handful of posts a year, and wait for the 60+ rumors I share a year or the rest of the 1,000+ free articles a year.

Gear Talk Detox Corner: Enchanting and Inspiring Fujifilm APS-C Image Rounudp

There is something I can promise you: in terms of gear talk, we have exciting times ahead. Fujifilm ain’t sleeping ;).

But as exciting as it will be to talk rumors and specs, we should never forget that at the end of all this talk, there is one single goal: get the picture!

And little it matters, that the images down below have all been taken with Fujifilm X-T APS-C cameras and shared at our Fujifilm X-T facebook group.

Today it’s all about inspiration, motivation, ideas and art.

So, may this post motivate you to close that browser tab, where people discuss about the “zero-point-something” difference at 400% magnification between camera X and Y, grab your camera, and simply go out and take pictures.

Oh, and don’t forget:

… the by far fastest growing Fuji X community, is our Fujifilm film simulation group, where we showcase the unedited power of the much praised Fujifilm colors. Make sure to follow that group too, if you want to see what you can get right in camera.

RUMOR: Fujifilm to Release a New Mid-Range Camera that is NOT an X-T30 or X-E3 Successor

Tell me, what would be the fun, if Fujifilm would just release what we customers expect? No fun at all, right?

So Fujifilm decided to surprise us and give us something unexpected ;).

But I invite you to read carefully to avoid misunderstandings!

A few months ago here, we told you that Fujifilm will release two mid-range cameras within the end of the Japanese fiscal year (March 2021). Of course if COVID-19 does not force Fujifilm to change plans again.

Now here is the thing.

When FujiRumors shared that rumor, 99% of you guys said “easy, those must be the long awaited X-T40 and the revived X-E4.”

Well, not really.

I can tell you today, that one of those two cameras will be a new mid-range camera line, hence not a direct successor to the Fujifilm X-T30 or Fujifilm X-E3. It’s something different.

And to be clear: there will be two mid-range cameras. This means, besides this new camera we rumor today, there will be another one, which could be a refresh of something we already know, or Fujifilm could surprise us also with the second one.

Hence, in terms of mid-range cameras, here is what we can expect in the next few months:

  • new mid-range camera NOT direct successor to Fujifilm X-T30 or X-E3
  • another mid-range cameras (unknown if a refresh of current camera lines or something new)

And now have fun speculating on what it could be in the comments (although I am pretty sure that nobody of you will make the right guess ;) )

Now that the I am on holiday from my teaching job and I am back from my 2 weeks trip in South Italy, I am working on this and many (!!!) more rumors. The right time to drop the rumors will come, and when it happens, make sure to be instantly notified by following FR on Facebook, RSS-feed and Twitter.

Take care guys, and have a fantastic day ahead!
