The GFX 50 Series is an ISO-less Classic

The sensor in the GFX 50 series is certainly not the fastest. Nevertheless, you should not underestimate this ISO-invariant classic with its 50 megapixels. In terms of sharpness and dynamic range, it can still hold a candle to newer developments.

by Rico Pfirstinger

Virtually all cameras of the Fujifilm X series are ISO-less (also known as ISO-invariant). This refers to cameras with sensors for which the ISO setting doesn’t matter in terms of image quality. Only the set aperture and exposure time (shutter speed) are decisive. It’s all about the actual amount of light that reaches the sensor. I have written about this before (German version, English version).

Is My Camera ISO-less?

You can find out yourself to what extent the sensor in your camera is ISO-less. Here’s an example with a GFX 50S: I first shot a consistently lit test subject at f/13, 1/50 sec. and ISO 1600. The result was a correctly exposed image. I then shot the same subject again at aperture 13 and 1/50 sec., but this time I reset the ISO to ISO 100. This is the base ISO value of the GFX 50 series, i.e. its baseline sensitivity. Of course, the second image appears four stops darker. After all, it was taken at an ISO setting that was four stops lower than the first shot, with otherwise the same exposure. To make our second image (captured at ISO 100) appear as bright as the first, we need to boost it four stops in the RAW converter (in our case, that’s Adobe Lightroom). This we do by moving the converter’s exposure slider 4 EV to the right from its zero position.

The same subject shot twice with f/13 and 1/50 sec. – on the left with ISO 1600, on the right with ISO 100 and a subsequent brightening in the RAW converter by 4 EV.

To better assess whether the GFX 50S used in this example really works ISO-less, let’s take a closer look at enlarged details of the two test shots:

BREAKING: Fujifilm GFX50SMKII to Ship in September plus Rumored Specs/Price Recap

So how the heck am I going to share this one?

I mean, worldwide chip shortage, Fujifilm announcing delays for lots of gear and unable to deliver products they announced many months ago and what not.

So telling you when the Fujifilm GFX50SII will ship is a rumor rocksolid at the moment,  but at the same time don’t be mad at me when at the date I’ll give you know there will be like 3 Fujifilm GFX50SII shipping, and then yet another biblical waiting will begin for the rest of the cameras to ship.

With that disclaimer out of the way, here is the rumor:

We haven been informed, that the Fujifilm GFX50SMKII will start shipping in September.

We also confirm once again, the the announcement itself will not take place on August 27.

Make sure to follow FujiRumors, because:

  • we have to talk more about the Fujifilm GFX50SMKII
  • we need to have discussions about more unreleased gear (to get an idea what, check out this unreleased gear timeline)
  • you might want to know about gear that has never been rumored before ;)

These are the Best Selling Fujifilm X/GFX Summer Deals on FujiRumors (Plus One Intruder)

The Fujifilm X and GFX summer deals are running. Some of them end today, some of them on July 23, and others on August 22. You can see the full details below.

In any case, if there is something you are interested in, it might be better to order today and not wait for the last second, for the reasons I’ve explained here.

With that said, I took a look at which Fujifilm X and GFX gear was selling best among the FujiRumors community, and here is what you guys picked most.

X Gear – Best Sellers

  1. XF 16-80mmF4
  2. XF 50-140mmF2.8
  3. XF 70-300mmF4-5.6
  4. Fujifilm X-T3
    Fujifilm X-T30
  5. XF 200mm F2
    XF 8-16mm F2.8

The Fujinon XF70-300mmF4-5.6 is not in offer, so it is sort of an intruder in this list, but it is selling good. I think Fujifilm hit many X shooters heart with this one. And while it might seem disappointing that the XF200 and XF8-16 are on the bottom of the ranking, the deals definitely helped to boost sales also for those lenses.

GFX gear – Best Sellers

  1. GF 50mm F3.5
  2. GF 45mmF2.8
  3. GF 32-64mmF4
  4. Fujifilm GFX 50R

The Nr.1 is taken by a lens that I myself am tempted to get, the compact GF50mmF3.5. I was hoping for a deal on it also here in Italy, but they went for other lenses, and I got myself the GF 32-64mmF4.

No surprise that the Fujifilm GFX50R does not sell strong, despite the $1,000 rebate, as this is a rebate we have already seen in the past and most people grabbed their sample back then.

Animal Autofocus Already Available on Fujifilm Cameras, just not X/GFX! A Kaizen Request to Fujifilm!

These are crazy firmware days, great joys thanks to massive new firmware and some worries due to faulty firmware.

So let’s talk firmware today.

One of the autofocus features where Sony and Canon are running away to the competition is “animal autofocus“.

And while it is probably not a feature that most of us would massively use, it would be definitely still nice to have.

Now, the FujiRumors community often asked me if Fujifilm plans to ever such a feature in future.

Well, let me say this first.

Among all camera manufacturers, Fujifilm was actually the very first company to offer something like that, with the Fujifilm FinePix F80EXR.

As you can read in the product description here:

For those who enjoy the company of four-legged friends, the F80EXR has Pet Detection, allowing users the ability to detect up to 10 faces of dogs or cats and automatically optimize the focus. The F80EXR is programmed to recognize 57% of the Fédération Cyno Logique Internationale (FCI) Registered Dogs, 80% of the Top 20 Dogs in the American Kennel Club (AKC) Ranking and 60% of The Cat Fancier’s Association (CFA) breeds. Pet Detection works by matching various dog or cat data of facial parts with patterns to detect the dog or cat being photographed.

So, considering that Fujifilm already had a similar feature, I am confident that they will offer that in future also on X and GFX series cameras, maybe extended to birds and other animals. Sure, it’s not a rumor, but looking at Fuji’s history makes me confident this is going to happen in future.
