Fujifilm X Summit: Recap of A Unique Event and One More Reason to Fall in Love with Fujifilm!

Fujifilm X Summit

What crazy days we had, triggered by the wonderful Fujifilm X Summit.

Fujifilm managers, engineers and designers explained their work, gave interesting insights and answered live questions of their customers.

Fujifilm even publicly asked us which lenses and firmware we would like next, letting us vote on various options (with overwhelming response by the FujiRumors community).

The X Summit shows, that the way Fujifilm interacts, listens and follows to customer needs, is more unique than rare, and it’s one more reason to fall in love with Fujifilm!

In case you missed it, make sure to check out our compact Fujifilm X Summit summary.

Fujifilm did an amazing job, customers answered in the best way possible, and for what it’s worth, I’ve also tried to honour the event by working restlessly and publishing 14 articles over the last weekend.

However, it seems that not everybody was able to keep track of it all, since I start to get emails from readers notifying me about news I have already published.

So I thought a quick recap could help:

Fun fact: at the X Summit Fujifilm said they will cooperate with Adobe for better X-Trans support, and four days later came this news:

  • click here – First Looks at ADOBE’s New Enhance Details Feature for Sharper Fujifilm X-Trans files
  • click here – ADOBE Improves Detail Rendering for FUJIFILM X-Trans RAW Files in Camera RAW 11.2

This Guy Mounted the Fujinon XF 56mmF1.2 on Sony A7R and Shows it Covers Entire Full Frame Sensor Area

Fujinon Lenses on Full Frame Sensor

Back in 2015, John investigated the question if Fujinon X glass can cover larger sensors areas than APS-C, by projected the light passing through Fujinon lenses on a piece of paper (full report here). His conclusion:

I could be wrong in my assumptions, […] but this difference between the Samyang and Fujinon lenses is proof enough for me that the X-mount can handle a larger sensor.

But John’s test was only theoretical.

What happens if you really mount a Fujinon lens on a full frame camera? Will there be heavy vignetting or not?

Albert tried to answer this questions by modifying the mount of his Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2, and basically making a Sony E-mount lens out of it.

And it did work out very well. Albert writes:

Lucky for me, it turns out to work pretty well, the XF56mm F1.2 covered the full frame sensor nicely, and the performance is on par with the popular classic lens, such as Canon FD 58mm f1.2 and Nikkor 50mm f1.2

I wonder, which other Fujinon lenses would cover full frame, too.

I guess red badged lenses such as the XF16-55, XF50-140, XF200mmF2 and XF8-16 as well as fast primes like the Fujinon XF35mmF1.4 and XF23mmF1.4.

You can read the whole article all and see the pictures at foodgrapher here. The article is dated October 2018 but passed unnoticed to all, until a FR-reader (thanks) send me the link via anonymous rumor box and I can now share it on FR. Thanks for your support also in 2019 :).

Fujifilm will Never go Full Frame

And before you start suggesting Fujifilm should put a full frame sensor into the existing X mount…

In no way I want to suggest that Fujifilm will go full frame. I share this test only to show how big the circle of projection of certain Fujinon lenses is, and Fuji’s APS-C camera use only the central (and best) part of the light circle.

And don’t forget: Fujifilm boss (and FujiRumors “lover”) Toshihisa Iida said loud and clear: “Fujifilm will NEVER go Full Frame“. Hence, I can’t see Fujifilm going full frame in any form or shape.

DPReviewTV Best and Worst of 2018: Fujifilm X-T3 Beats Sony A7III and Nikon Z6, but Fujifilm X-T100 and XF10 Fail

Best Gear 2018

Chris and Jordan from DPReviewTV just published their best and worst gear 2018 epsiode.

The GOOD News:

The Fujifilm X-T3 wins the award for the best camera of 2018, beating the full frame Sony A7III and Nikon Z6.

The Fujifilm X-T3 has already been declared best camera of 2018 by many big youtubers and blogs. Check out our recent best of 2018 overview here.

The BAD News:

The Fujifilm X-T100 has been declared worst video camera of 2018, with a useless 4K. The Fujifilm XF10 is the thrid worst camera of 2018. Bad and unreliable focussing. Slow, laggy.

Dear Fujifilm, this is what happens if you put an old and slow processor in cameras that otherwise would have a very nice sensor.

The MISSING News:

Strangly, not a single Fujinon lens makes it into the list.

I believe the Fujinon XF200mmF2 would have deserved a top spot, and not to forget the Fujinon XF8-16mmF2.8 or the Fujinon GF250mmF4.

And maybe also the medium format Fujifilm GFX50R should have gotten at least an honorable mention.

BEST CAMERA 2018

  1. Fujifilm X-T3
  2. Sony A7III
  3. Nikon Z6

WORST CAMERA 2018

  1. Yashica Y35
  2. Pentax K1 II

  3. Sony 24mmF1.4 FE GM

WORST LENS 2018

  1. Sony 18-135mm F3.5-5.6
  2. Nikon Z lenses, particulary the 50mmF1.8. Ugly bokeh

BEST VIDEO CAMERA 2018

  1. Panasonic GH5S (FYI: no IBIS camera. And why that is good, is explained by Panasonic here)
  2. Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K
  3. DJI Mavi II Pro

Mirrorlessrumors received the first images and specs of the 7Artisan 60mm f/2.8 1:1: Macro lens.

It will be available for Fujifilm X mirrorless APS-C cameras as well as Sony E, EOS-M and MFT mount.

First sample image at the bottom of this article.

Mirrorlessrumors notes that the description contains an error when describing the lens construction, since this is a screenshot from a beta page that is still under construction and mistakes will be fixed.

Checking the complete list of current and future native X-mount lenses, I see currently only three native 1:1 macro lenses for Fujifilm X available:

The 7Artisan 60mm f/2.8 1:1 Macro lens will add to the already wide range of Chinese made Fujifilm X mount lenses. Full list below:

Fujinon XF 33mm F1.0 vs XF 35mm F1.4 vs XF 35mm F2 – SIZE COMPARISON

Fujinon XF33mmF1.0 vs XF35mmF1.4 vs XF35mmF2

As you know, I have been to photokina 2018, and I also have delivered you the worldwide first real life images of the XF33mmF1.0, XF16mmF2.8 and XF16-80mmF4 lenses, as well as a side by side comparison of the 3 new lenses on Fuji’s roadmap.

However, I keep up getting questions about how big the XF 33mm F1.0 is, compared to its little brothers, the XF 35mm F1.4 and XF 35mm F2 WR.

So based on the images I took and what I have seen with my own eyes at the Photokina Fujifilm booth, I try to give you a visual representation of how Fuji’s 50mm equivalent trinity compares side by side mounted on a Fujifilm X-T3.

Of course this can’t be super-accurate, and I’d say it’s 85+% close to perfection. However, the Fujinon XF 33mm F1.0 will hit the market in 2020, and until there, the final size can change.

In an earlier post on FujiRumors, we launched a huge poll, asking you guys if you consider the Fujinon XF33mmF1.0 is too big for you. 7,500 people voted already, and you can check the results here.

We also launched XF33mmF1.0 feature polls in the past, that you can check out here.

And speaking of 35mm lenses…

Which Older Fujinon X Mount Lenses Should Fujifilm Update Next? POLL

Fujinon XF Mark II

About 2 years ago, I asked you guys which APS-C lenses Fujifilm should make next.

Your response was overwhelming, and you recommended thousands of lenses. I meticulously collected all your suggestions, and made a 30 lenses poll out of them.

The rest is history: as you can see from the results here, you guys vote the XF33mmF1.0 followed by the XF16-80mmF4 as your most wanted lenses, which are exactly the lenses Fujifilm recently added to their X mount roadmap.

Today I’d launch another poll.

This time it’s not about completely new lenses, but about which “older” Fujinon lenses Fujifilm should update.

What does “update” mean?

Mainly it means:

I debated if I should include the XF16-55mmF2.8 and XF90mmF2, which I know many would like to have OIS. But I decided not to include them, since the workaround is to use Fujifilm X-H1 and future Fujifilm X-H2 with IBIS. And who knows if down the road there will be more IBIS camera bodies. Check out the Fujifilm X Camera replacement timeline here.

I will be very cruel to you guys and give you only 1 option to vote :)

Happy voting… and may Fujifilm listen also this time.

Top Fujifilm Manager Toshihisa Iida: “We will NEVER go Full Frame”

Fujifilm Manager Interview

DPReivew just published the interview they had with top Fujifilm manager Toshihisa Iida at photokina 2018, which includes the clearest statement I have ever heard so far if Fujifilm will go full frame or not. It’s a clear “No, never!”

He also opens to the possiblity of an interchangeable lens Instax camera and maybe even cine lenses for the GFX system.

Here some excerpts of the interview.

Q: Will Fujifilm ever enter the full-frame market?
A: No, never. Because we don’t have that legacy – luckily or unluckily. We don’t see any point in Fujifilm entering that market, particularly since we have good APS-C and medium format systems. If we entered full-frame [our systems] would just start cannibalizing each other. We’re happy to stay with two completely independent systems.

Q: Do you see many of your users upgrading from X to GFX?
A: Not quite yet. Because they’re totally different systems. […] I hope that in near future more X Series customers will step up to GFX.

Q: GFX 50R and GFX 100S
A: All GFX 50R controls must be reachable with one hand, that was our concept for usability. We wanted the camera to be more suited to street, reportage and portrait photography. The forthcoming 100MP camera is more SLR style, with a detachable viewfinder, more similar to the 50S, but with an integrated battery grip for greater battery capacity. The sensor and the image stabilization system need more power. The biggest challenge was image stabilization.

Q: Will the viewfinder experience of the 100MP camera be better to the current GFX 50S and 50R?
A: It should be a lot better, yes, because the readout speed of the new sensor is a lot quicker. The sensor and the processor itself are both upgraded. The processor is much more powerful.

Q: Video features on Fujifilm cameras?
A: The forthcoming 100MP camera will be the first 4K/30p GFX camera. […] With the X Series we have a plan, for example to extend recording time, and make the menus more usable for still and video shooting.

Q: 100MP and 4K/30p represent a huge amount of data – is SD media still appropriate?
A: I think that SD media and HDMI output are enough for now

Q: Do you welcome third-party lens manufacturers that want to create lenses for XF and GF?
A: They’re not open standards as yet, but of course our customers want choice. We’re always considering what would benefit our customers, and more lenses are generally beneficial for customers.

Q: Should we expect to see more smaller, compact lenses for GF mount, like the forthcoming 50mm pancake?
A: Yes, in the future we’d like to expand our lineup of compact lenses for GF.

Q: In the past we’ve spoken about software corrections for some lenses. Do you see a future where your high-quality lenses could be made smaller using software?
A: We always prioritize optical quality first, minimizing software correction. That’s our policy at the moment, and I don’t think it will change. That’s why the APS-C format is important to us. We make the lenses as small as possible, without [a lot of] software correction.

Q: What are the challenges of designing fast focusing large-aperture lenses?
A: A brighter lens means that each element is heavier. So we need to build in more powerful focus actuators, but there’s limited space. So it’s always a tradeoff of lens brightness, focus speed, and how heavy the lens is.

Fujifilm Wins “Good Design Award 2018” with 29 Products in Recognition of their Design and Performance

Good Design Award

Fujifilm won 29 awards at the Good Design Awards 2018.

Now, I don’t know how the Good Design Award works, but if it’s like EISA and TIPA, then don’t take it too seriously. We have documented here, how EISA and TIPA work. Check the article out, if you want to know get clarity about the (not so transparent) award business.

With that said, Good Design gave an award to 29 Fuji products. Here are the cameras and lenses:
