Fujifilm X-T2 Roundup :: Video, Sports and Stills… the Best Mirrorless Allrounder?

X-T2: Joe Ng x Sports at Fujifilm

Lot’s of great feedback about the Fujifilm X-T2 so far. The Stills are great (no surprise), the Autofocus Tracking and Accuracy seems to be vastly improved (see TCSTV Video Review) and big surprise… 4K shooting works. No moiré, no overheating, sharp and nice images.

The Fujifilm X-T2 is Fujifilm’s most complete camera… and if all the initial excellent feedback will get confirmed in future reviews, then it might be one of the best mirrorless allrounder out there… if not the best. And if only the X-Pro2 could get those AF tracking custom settings, too….

So let’s continue our X-T2 Coverage:

Fuji Manager: “Medium Format? We can Satisfy Most People with APS-C. But in Future Our Goal is to Satisfy Everyone!”

Medium Format

Following the Fujifilm X-T2 launch, dpreview had a talk with 3 important Fuji Managers: Yuji Igarashi, Takashi Ueno and Ryouichi Takamoto.

Of course a lot of talk about the Fujifilm X-T2. But not only. Here some excerpts:

Q: Could 4K movie recording be added to the X-Pro 2 with firmware?
A: No. Because of hardware issues. We’d need to add a heatsink, which the X-Pro 2 doesn’t have because we wanted to maintain its body size.

Q: Why did you decide not to include a touchscreen on the X-T2?
One reason is that a key feature of the X-series is dial operation. And dial operation and touch operation are completely different, so combining them could be confusing. The typical way of shooting with X-series cameras is with your eye to the viewfinder, and to use a touchscreen you’d have to take your eye away from the finder.

Q: Hasselblad just released the X1D – a relatively compact medium format camera. Do you think there is an opportunity for Fujfilm in this market in the future?
A: We’re keeping our eye on that market, and the full-frame market too, but we’re still focusing on our APS-C range. […] The question of sensor size depends on what the user wants, as an output. If you’re using a medium format camera and you definitely need that for the work you’re doing, maybe APS-C is too small. But for general use, I think our [current] APS-C sensor is comparable to full-frame image quality. I think we can satisfy most people. But in future our goal is to satisfy everyone.

Read also the Following Medium Format Fujifilm Rumors: 50MP Sensor & Available 2017 + Definitely More Affordable than Hasselblad X1D + To Be Launched along with 3 Lenses+ 50MP Sensor & Available 2017+ Mirrorless with interchangeable lenses

Q: Is Fujfilm committed to the sub-APS-C market anymore, or are you focused now on APS-C?
A: We still do well with tough cameras. Because smartphones haven’t been able to replace them. So we’ve not completely abandoned that market. As long as there’s opportunity we’ll continue to look into it.

Comment from dpreview:

Publicly, Fujifilm is fully committed to its APS-C system, with its twin flagships, but I’d be very surprised if some of the company’s engineers aren’t looking jealously westward to Sweden, where Hasselblad recently announced the X1D. This, after all, is precisely the kind of medium format camera that Fujifilm used to be known for, back in the film days. Lightweight (ish), easy-to-use, and relatively affordable next to more traditional SLRs.

One of the gentlemen I spoke to last week said that ‘in future our goal is to satisfy everyone’. Only he knows exactly what he meant by that, but it’s fun to speculate. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.

Full Interview at dpreview (thanks for the link, J.)

Some Thoughts:

  1. Say goodbye forever to your dreams of a 4K Firmware for the Fuji X-Pro2
  2. It really sounds like the Manager declared the death of the X10/20/30 line. Apparently, to what belongs sensors smaller than APS-C, only the tough waterproof and shock resistant camera line of the Fujifilm XP90 will survive. Not a big surprise. Our trusted Japanese source already told us, that there is no X40 on the horizon. Moreover, the X30 and XQ2 are already officially discountinued… and not because a successor is coming anytime soon.
  3. It’s over a year now that I insist Fuji is working on a Medium Format camera. And I see around the web the Medium Format Fujifilm rumor is already taken as some kind of fact… and that’s good so, because it’s true. I tell you, if for some reason it does not come, I’ll close FR and hide somewhere forever ;) .

Preface:

About a year ago while hiking in Zion Utah, I came across a big horn sheep herd, I took some pictures with the Fuji 90mm at far too close a distance (around 4 meters), since then I’ve been hooked and keen on trying out wildlife photography as a pastime. This is what has led me into the point I am at now, with a Fuji 100-400mm a 2x teleconverter and a cropped sensor, equating to ≈ 1200mm

Equipment: Fuji X-Pro2, Fuji 100-400mm, Fuji 2x TC

Look and feel:

The combination is very easy to use, it’s still light, although too long for most bags, and wildlife begs for your camera and lens to be ready and set up, with hood on and camera setup it makes this a large, yet light package.

Durability:

Hiked through the mountains of Yellowstone Nation Park for 10 days, got rained on very hard (way to much for comfort) and the combination kept up with nary a problem in sight. It seems to be apt for the job.

Sharpness:

Well this is tricky, the Fuji 100-400 is sharp, but at the 400mm end it’s not as sharp, the setup although fantastic for shooting hand-held, isn’t bright enough to keep ISO down and shutter speeds up, not to mention swinging 1200mm is tricky at best and your movement is amplified greatly and you can overwork the Optical Stabilization quickly with quick jerks and movements, but I got really good results hand-held @1200mm’s without wearing myself out because of weight and size, I would call that a good give and take.

Image Stabilization:

It’s hands down amazing, it’s not magic, you can’t swing this combination and hope for the best, but I spoke with many photographers all of which were posting against something or had tripods, at the distances we were sharing my photos were more clear, and usually much closer.

Reach:

1200mm can be shot handheld with ease, and its much easier to fill up the frame at safer distances.

Auto Focus:

It works, and I know this sounds rather silly, but you have to spend a lot of money on the DSLR side to get 1200mm to autofocus (from what I know). It’s actually pretty fast and accurate in good light. It’s amazing to think that it is contrast based to be honest.

Conclusion:

I couldn’t be happier with this combination, I’m truly hoping that fuji comes out with a 300mm f2.8, I would buy that setup in a heart beat. As is though, Fuji is really moving quickly with filling in all the gaps with lenses, they are making wonderful optics and they truly work well and are a pleasure to use.

BUG :: Temporary Suspension of Firmware download for XF90mmF2 and XF16-55mmF2.8

2000px-Fujifilm_logo.svg

Notification regarding temporary suspension of firmware download XF90mmF2 R LM WR / XF16-55mmF2.8 R LM WR

The FUJIFILM X-series product range has received excellent reviews from a wide range of users since launch. The excellent build, retro design, intuitive controls and outstanding image quality combine to form a package which has delighted professional and enthusiast photographers across the world.

Unfortunately we have discovered that the latest firmware of XF90mmF2 R LM WR (Ver.1.01) and XF16-55mmF2.8 R LM WR (Ver1.10) launched on 9 June 2016 has a potential issue which may result in a failure if the upgrade is conducted with a camera whose firmware is the previous version. In this case, the LCD on the camera blinks on & off after the camera is turned on and then a “Lens Error” message is indicated. If this phenomenon doesn’t occur after the firmware upgrade, these lenses can be used normally.
Due to the above, the download service of the firmware of XF90mmF2 R LM WR and XF16-55mmF2.8 R LM WR is temporarily suspended.
We have addressed the potential issue and will release an improved firmware for both the XF90mmF2 R LM WR and XF16-55mmF2.8 R LM WR. This latest version will be released on our Global site on 21 July 2016.

  • * The firmware versions of cameras which may cause this issue.

Fuji X-T2 + 4K Video: “There is no Moiré. Sharp and more cinematographic than GH4. I can use it 100% for Video”

X-Trans and Video never were good friends.

Both, the X-TransI and X-TransII sensor had some serious issue with moiré in videos. However, already the X-Pro2 dramatically improved the Video Quality of Fuji Cameras.

But what about the 4K on the Fujifilm X-T2? Videographer Emmanuel Pampuri says:

Picture quality is amazing. […] It’s more cinematographic than the GH4 […] We don’t have the f-log on firmware right now, Fuji is still working on it. […] Picture quality is very sharp. There is no aliasing, no moiré… it’s beautiful. […] I can use it properly 100% for the Video […] Fuji is still developing the firmware. I get a new firmware every two days […] Battery life is not so good if you don’t use it with vertical grip […] It’s still a CMOS sensor, so there is still an issue with the rolling shutter.

Fuji X-T2 Roundup :: Fuji X-T2… why “Taurus”? :: X-T2 First Looks :: Fuji X-T2 Really Right Stuff Plates

Taurus 2

Fujifilm X-T2: USA: BHphoto / AmazonUS / Adorama / CANADA: AmazonCA / EUROPE: AmazonDE / Calumentphoto DE / AmazonUK / AmazonITA / AmazonFR / AmazonESP / PCHstore / WexUK / AUSTRALIA: CameraPro

What’s Taurus?

A weekend curiosity. When I opened the new Fujifilm Catalogue, I noticed that on my Firefox Tab, instead of “X-T2“, the name “Taurus_EN_Cover” appreared. Sounds like some kind of secret code Fuji used for the X-T(aurus)2. But maybe you have better specualtions.

And if you are a future X-T2 owner and haven’t done so far, then download the Catalogue here.

*** UDPATE *** A trusted source dropped me an email saying that Fujifilm started naming it’s prototypes after constellations. So, Fuji, I’m “Aries”… take that name for the Fuji X-E3 (Read also my LOVE LETTER to the Unborn FUJIFILM X-E3)

Fuji X-T2 – Worth the Upgrade from X-T1? :: VIDEO + POLLS… and a Bit of Love for X-T1 Doesn’t Hurt these Days ;)

Upgrade from Fuji X-T1 to Fuji X-T2

I somehow have the feeling, that Ted Vieira is not the only X-shooter out there at the moment, who struggles with this question: is the Fujifilm X-T2 worth the upgrade from the Fuji X-T1?

Well, actually Ted has no hesitations, since he says he would switch “in a heartbeat“. But he has also a few words of love for the X-T1 at the end (well done Ted… a bit of Love for the X-T1 doesn’t hurt these days).

And what about you? Worth the Upgrade? Here is the Poll

Is it worth to upgrade from the Fuji X-T1 to the Fuji X-T2?

X-T2 or X-Pro2

Upgrade from Fuji X-T1

X-T2 or X-Pro2 – VOTE

And another hot questions is: Fuji X-T2 or Fuji X-Pro2? Current Survey at the Fuji X Forum.

A month ago, I’ve launched a “Super-Poll” here, where I asked you which camera do you prefer for the different photography genres. Several thousands of X-shooters have dropped their vote, and it turns out that in most cases X-shooter prefer the X-T2.

However, the X-Pro2 shines in 3 photography styles: Street, Documentary and Travel Photography.

The Poll results show that the two cameras don’t really compete with each other. The X-Pro2 and its rangefinder style with HVF corner placement perfectly harmonizes with the small Fuji primes, making it a ideal package for documentray photography & Co. But if you are looking for the better allrounder, than I’d recommend you to grab the Fuji X-T2.

That said… you know what you mainly shoot, you know your needs. And you have the answer!

And all the Rest

Ok… I did my homework and made one of the hardest Live Bloggings ever. With about 40 links to first looks and videos, I’ve tried to cover the event as good as I could.

But the coverage continues on our forum: Fujifilm X-T2 Reviews Here. Feel free to drop your findings over there and check out what others have spotted.

The Forum now also has a dedicated X-T2 section.

There is also a dedicated Fuji X-T2 facebook Group.

And suddenly it happened…. the X-T2 became real, and all of a sudden the internet was flooded with First Looks and Information, that I’ve tried to collect in my Live Blogging here, adding a short comment to each first look.

But as much as I blog, the news stream is so big, that it’s easy to miss something, even though I’ve shared it on FujiRumors. So I’ll make a list of things you might have missed (and you can now stop sending me via email ;) ). And I’ll share also some things, that are brand new.

  1. Fuji Guy Billy First Look Video: I’ve shared many videos about the X-T2 in my Live Blogging – still ongoing. Now also the First Look of Fuji Guy Billy is online (video above).
  2. X-Pro2 + KAIZEN: As rumored, Fujifilm announced a new Firmware for the X-Pro2. It will be released in October… but knowing Fuji this means December ;). Anyway, the main course of the meal is the improved AF-speed, which will make it as fast as the X-T2. Press Release here.
  3. NEW ROADMAP + 80mm with OIS: As rumored, Fujifilm launched a New Roadmap and scratched the 120mm. The new roadmap includes three lenses: 23mmF2, 50mmF2 and the 80mmF2.8 Macro OIS…. Did you notice? I said 80mm”OIS“! Now here is the thing: I’m 100% sure that, at the time of sharing the “80mm OIS-less” rumor, this information was correct. But I also told you at the time of the rumor, the design was not final and Fuji could change plan anytime. And I like to think that the massive shitstorm the “OIS-less rumor” caused here on FujiRumors, might have made change plan at the Fuji HQ…. AND: the 80mm will be compatible with both Fuji teleconverters :-)
  4. X-T2 + 3.5mm micorphone jack Inpu on the camera. The grip has headphone jack.
  5. X-T2 + 4K: as rumored, you can shoot 30 minutes in 4K when vertical grip is attached. New Information: The X-T2 captures actually a bit more than 4K, and then sizes it down to TV resolution. Without grip you can shoot 10 minutes 4K. Oh… and it offers F-log profile (but not available in camera – although Fuji said this could be fixed via Firmware update). Shoots 4K with a 1.17x crop.
  6. X-T2 + Adobe: Adobe already supports the X-T2 files since early June! (source – riflessifotografici X-T2 Review)
  7. X-T2 + More Options for Continous AF: You can now customize the Continuous AF, choosing 5 Fuji Presets that are configured for different scenarios or make your own one.
  8. X-T2 + Price Chaos: Big Confusion here. The rumor I’ve shared said it will be cheaper than the X-Pro2. And it’s like this in USA. And in the EU? It costs 1,700 in Germany (see fotomundus24 store). The French site lemondedelaphoto says €1600 in France, but the official France Press Release says €1700. Why? Because of Brexit Fujifilm raised the price in the last second. And speaking of Brexit, the only country, where the X-T2 costs more than the X-Pro2 is UK. So you see why this time I was reluctant to share any precise price? ;)
  9. X-T2 + USB Charging?: Riddle: will the X-T2 (and the Vertical Grip) offer USB-Charging? There is absolutely no mention about it in the official Press Release. So was the rumor wrong? Everything is possible. Or maybe I confused something my sources said. In fact, as shown by Fuji Guy Billy, you can indeed charge the batteries, while they are inside the battery grip, but not via USB. You have to use a 9 volt adapter. So the batteries can be charged without having to be removed from the grip. But I’ll investigate further. UDPATE: It Works. More Here.
  10. Centered Tripod Mount: Some of you asked, now we have the answer: the tripod mount is centered to the lens
