Fujifilm Digital Camera Range: Making Sense of the Line-Up, What Should be Dropped, What Should Stay… and Where is the X-H Line?

Fujifilm shared this Pyramid explaining their Current Camera Line-up
Fujifilm shared this Pyramid explaining their Current Camera Line-up

I already said it in my X-S10, Attack on Sony article: the Fujifilm X-S10 makes a whole lot of sense.

And yet, I do understand one of the critiques made to Fujifilm: their line-up is huge and potentially confusing.

There are indeed some lines, that in some occasions do not not differentiated themselves enough from each other.

But this is an issue Fujifilm realized and I feel that they are taking care of it, for example:

  • the Fujifilm X-Pro3 is a unique machine, with a concept, so far nowhere to find
  • Fujifilm is aware that the the Fujifilm X-H2 must differentiate stronger from the X-T* line in order to continue to evolve separately

Fujifilm understands the problem and is finding ways to separate the lines better.

And yet… there are some lines that should be dropped, in my opinion.

Let’s take a look it at, by using an official Fujifilm media sheet that has been sent to me, which shows a pyramid with all Fujifilm X series cameras listed and ordered by Fujifilm itself.

Gear Talk Detox Corner: Stunning Selection Images Taken of Fujifilm X Series Gear (Watch it if you LOVE Photography)

From time to time, we should be reminded that light, moment and inspiration matter more than megapixel, specs and AF speed.

I mean, I am the first to admit that I find it also enjoyable to talk about gear here on FujiRumors. It’s just fun, there is no way around it. :)

But the words we speak here, the chats we have, I don’t print them big, frame them, and put them on a wall. I don’t print and frame the specs sheet of the latest camera.

What I do print instead, are the images I am most happy with.

Images impregnated with precious memories, like the first travel I made with what would become my wife in France, or the first time we slept high up on a mountain hut, and we enjoyed the sunrise over the wonderful Dolomite peaks.

Or my first travel in South East Asia, and the all new (and crazy) photographic opportunities that opened up to me there, the encounters and the surprises, the landscape.

I sometimes just need the inspirational kick that stunning work of other fellow X shooters can give me… and if it can be an inspirational kick also for a small number of FujiRumors readers, too, then that’s fine for me, and reason enough to keep these articles coming.

With that said, give it a look down below… and after that, grab your gear and go out shooting… which is what I will do now.

My old dog, my wife, my X gear… a sunny hill nearby… autumn colors… and I might get back with a nice memory captured on my SD-card today, who knows.

So, I am off now… have a wonderful day and weekend.

Fujinon XF Wildlife Photography Lenses Needed, Base ISO 100, Firmware Wishes and More – FR-Readers Wishlist Corner

Here is another roundup of wishlist shared by the FR-community to me via email at fujirumor@gmail.com.

Previous Wishlist Episodes:

Because it touches the wish expressed by Michel, Willy and Kenneth, I invite you to check out also our big Fujinon XF wildlife photography survey and other long telephoto primes articles we have previously shared (list below).

Overall, there seems to be a strong wish by the FR-community for longer primes.

But we know the stellar Fujinon XF200mm f/2.0 did not sell well, and hence it’s obvious that Fujifilm is now a bit reluctant to invest further in long lenses.

But keep in mind, the XF200mmF2.0 comes with a 1.4x teleconverter designed specifically for this lens, which transforms the XF200mmF2 lens basically in a 280mmF2.8 lens. So, with 1 single lens, here is what you get:

  • XF 200mmF2.0 = full frame 280mmF2.8 (f/2.8 DOF equivalent)
  • XF 280mmF2.8 = full frame 420mmF4.2 (f/4.2 DOF equivalent)

If you want to, you can check out our previous “long telephoto primes” related articles.

I also got many wishes regarding future cameras, but since this roundup is already hefty enough, I will share the “camera-wishlist” at a later point.

The Fujinon GF30mmF3.5 is Coming and We Celebrate Its Arrival with a Stunning GF Lenses Image Roundup

As you know, the upcoming Fujinon GF30mm f/3.5 specs have already leaked here.

We wait for nokishita to leak the images in the next few days, and as soon as it happens, I’ll report about it on FujiRumors.

Of course there will be a live blogging. When exactly? Well… let’s say you should just trust my sixth sense. I will start the live blog 0.01 seconds after the lens has been announced, don’t worry about that at all. ;)

The Fujinon GF 30mm f/3.5 equals to a much loved focal length among Fujifilm APS-C X-shooters, the 16mm (in terms of primes, there are the XF16mm f/1.4, and the compact XF16mm f/2.8).

If we want to be precise, the Fujinon GF30mm f/3.5, converted in other formats, is about:

  • Full Frame: 23mm f/2.8
  • APS-C: 16mm f/1.8

To me, that’s a very nice focal length.

The GF30mm f/3.5 also seems to be well balanced in terms of price and size, as you can see from the leaks here and from the size comparison with the Fujinon GF23mm f/4 and the Fujinon GF 45mm f/2.8 we made in this post.

The Advantage of GF lenses

Fujinon GF lenses are about the top lenses you can get on the market.

And in fact, one crucial advantage of medium format GF lenses over full frame or APS-C lenses, is that they can be designed for much higher resolution than lenses for smaller formats.

This is why, if sharp images with tons of detail is what you are looking for, then the best and most future proof system you can buy into (without breaking the bank), is the GFX system.

I am sure the new Fujinon GF30mm f/3.5 will keep the excellent G mount tradition, and deliver spectacular results, too.

Image Roundup

And in order to celebrate the arrival of the Fujinon GF30mm f/3.5, I thought I share a rounudp of GFX images, with some selected photographs taken by members of our massive Fujifilm GFX facebook group.

The roundup includes many Fujinon G mount lenses, but not only that.

The GFX system is a joy to use with adapted lenses, hence in this roundup, you’ll find GFX cameras taking picutres with the following lenses:

I hope you will enjoy the images below as much as I did, and I wish you a fantastic day ahead.

FUJIFILM Fiscal Year 2020: Imaging Division Suffers COVID-19, Operating Income Down 51%, Revenue Down 14%, Strong GFX100/X100V/X-Pro3 Sales

Fujifilm has now published its fiscal report for the fiscal year 2020 (1 April 2019 – 31 March 2020).

Fellow FR-reader Mistral has summarized it in French over at the French forum chassimages. In short:

Fujifilm as a whole is still doing well even if it has not reached the expected goals given the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic on its last quarter.

Imaging Solutions is the division with the lowest performance.

Fujifilm records a loss in the last quarter. The decline in sales of digital cameras and their lenses has accelerated throughout the year.

The only positive note: the Fujifilm GFX100 keeps up selling strong, as well as the Fujifilm X100V and Fujifilm X-Pro3 are mentioned positively in the various reports.

Fujifilm Patent Shows Compact Camera with Dual Rear Command Dials for Digital Dials Control

I stumbled on a Fujifilm patent, that shows a compact camera with dual rear dials that operate synchronized to a top LCD panel.

This reminds us at the Fujifilm GFX100 fake dials, with the difference that this time we have 2 rear command dials that can be assigned to operate different camera functions, which then will be displayed in form of fake dials on the top LCD screen.

It looks like Fujifilm is continuing to develop a hybrid analog/digital solution, in an attempt to melt the best of both worlds into one user interface.

In this case, virtual dials could allow for a smaller camera design. Who knows, maybe something for a Fujifilm X80, if something like that will ever hit the market.
