Concerns with Quality of Fujifilm GF Medium Format Lenses (and Overall Fujifilm Camera/Lenses)… and a Little Ode to Local Stores

Check Your Lenses… and a Little Ode to My (and Your) Local Store

One of the reasons why I like to buy my gear at the local dealer (instead of ordering online), is that I can always inspect the gear before buying it.

So, when last month I bought the XF10-24 and XF27mm, my dealer opened the boxes, checked if there was any issue such as dust spots inside the lens, and he even checked if the latest firmware for the lenses was installed (it wasn’t, so he updated the lens firmware in store for me… AWESOME!)

So far, with ALL Fujinon lenses I have ever bought, I never had any dust spot issue. Actually I always perceived my lenses as excellently build. I mean, my XF35mmF1.4 still works perfectly, even though it was minutes completely under water, the day I destroyed my X-E2 in a river.

Anyway, I know things like dust spots in the lens happen, and I experienced them in the past when I used other systems. Since then, my habit is to visually check lenses, before buying them.

If small, then dust spots will have absolutely no influence on image quality.

However, when you pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars for a new lens, you do want it to be perfect out of the box, and personally I would change any new lens, even if it has the smallest dust inside it.

With that said… let’s talk about Fujifilm quality.

Why I Bought Fujifilm X-E3 (and not X-T20, X100F, X-H1)… and Why All this Hate for XF27mm? – FIRST IMPRESSIONS

I’m packing. I’m leaving. A long car ride all to way to Prague is waiting for me.

But before I leave, here is a blog post about why I bought the X-E3, XF27mm and XF10-24, as well as some initial feedback… sadly also something negative amongst it.

But first… make sure to follow our Fujifilm X-E facebook group.

New X Gear Arrived at the FujiRumors Headquarter… Guess What ? – UPDATE

Hey all…

X-mas came a few days earlier here at the FujiRumors headquarter (right in time for my weekend trip to Prague).

Make your guess what you think could be in those 3 nice FUJIFILM boxes :)

I going to grab my dinner now, and then I will update this blog post with the answer.

In a separate article I will cover more comprehensively why I decided to grab this specific gear and not other Fuji X gear (one decision was particulary difficult), as well as give your first (postive, but also negative) feedback about it.

Now let’s see how accurately you read FujiRumors, because I dropped some hints now and then about the gear I’m lusting after… and starting from today, I finally own it :)

And I got the XF10-24, too

Fujinon XF80mmF2.8: Sharper is Impossible. Better Than XF90mm… but is it Too Sharp for Portraits?

Up to date, the XF90mmF2 and XF16mmF1.4 are considered to be Fujifilm sharpest lenses on the market. But the Fujinon XF80mmF2.8 is going to raise the bar even higher. That’s at least what we can hear at the German ishootyou youtube, where they already had the opportunity to test the lens.

Interesting to note is that they consider the XF80mm to be too sharp for portraits. Really, how can sharpness be a problem? The reviewer compares it to spicy food. If you make your meal too spicy, you don’t get a nice well-balanced organic taste. A too spicy meal distracts your attention from the real taste of the meal to its spiciness only.

Watch it all here (with image samples), but if you are in a hurry now or do not understand German, you know… I’m a kind guy… so I translated the main points for you down below :)

  • Macro lenses are great allrounders, also for filming, and the XF80mm has great OIS
  • OIS is so good, that you can shoot Macro handheld. Fujifilm has the best OIS that the reviewer knows of
  • Extremely Sharp. Maybe even too sharp for portraits
  • Bokeh on XF90mm is better (round bokeh bolls). On XF80mm it’s has more an egg-form bokeh
  • The clinical sharpness and not optimal bokeh, make the XF90mm still the better choice for portraits. But it’s excellent for Macro, video and still a flexible tool
  • The 80mm raises the bar… and one can only look forward to the performance of future XF lenses

And here are a few more XF80mm reivews and hands on.

  • I get emails from readers linking to this Fujifilm PDF about the Fujifilm Macro extension tubes. I know, we already reported about it back October 12 here :) . The XF 80mm Macro is in the table for MCEX-tubes. With MCEX-16 magnification will be x1.27 at minimal 8cm distance between lens and object.

TheCameraStoreTV Fujifilm Live Edition: XF 80mm Macro, X-E3 and More

What a coincidence… just when I had my babysitting break of 1 hour, TheCameraStoreTV started a live stream with Fuji Guy Jarry Julien.

So I could intereact with the show and also with prominent Fuji Guys like Billy, who was active in the comments. Btw, Billy said in the comments he thinks he saw me taking a picture of him at Photokina 2016. Yep, that’s the image… and I’ve found Waldo, too :D

Fujifilm Releases New Firmware for Fujifilm X-T2, X-Pro2, XF 10-24 and XF18-55

Fujifilm just released a firmware update, that fixed the X-T2 and X-Pro2 lock ups when shooting in CH

  • 1. The phenomenon is fixed that in rare cases, a freeze could occur during repeated CH (continuous high speed) shooting and so on.

There are updates also for the XF 18-55 and XF 10-24

  • 1.The phenomenon is fixed that in rare cases, a focal length could be displayed wrongly and/or shaking could be seen in a peripheral part of images even if a focal length and a focus are fixed.
