Fujifilm Releases Significant Firmware Updates for Many XF/GF Lenses (plus X-A3, X-A10, XA20)

Fujifilm has released firmware updates for plenty of lenses that will make the autofocus more silent, the aperture operate smoother and also give better tracking performance while zooming.

That’s a very nice upgrade especially for video shooters.

Not all lenses will get all these three updates. You can find the full detailed list below.

CineD Interview with Tamron Manager: Why f/2.8 on Tamron 11-20mm F2.8 Matters (vs Fuji’s f/4)

CineD had a talk with Tamron managers at the CP+in Japan.

The talk gravitates around the new Tamron 11-20mm F/2.8 Di III-A RXD for Fujifilm X mount, which will come in Spring 2023.

The manager says:

  • it’s a small and compact lens, because to go with a Fujifilm camera, it has to be small and compact. That’s what customers are looking for
  • same optics of the Sony version
  • they wanted a wider range than 14mm, but at the same time keep the size compact, so they decided to start at 11mm. If you start at 9 or 10mm or go up at 24mm, the lens would become a bit bigger
  • the hard part of planing new products is to find the balance. It’s always a big discussion
  • Tamron lens utility App (an App that can control lenses via USB-C connector). The Tamron 11-20mmF2.8 does not have that USB-C connection. That’s because the original lens was made for Sony and at the time there was no lens utility App
  • in future new lenses will have the system for the Lens Utility App
  • Tamron is planing to target also videographers with future lenses
  • final price for the Tamron 11-20mmF2.8 has not yet been set
  • Fujifilm does have the XF10-24mmF4. Tamron saw the opportunity to offer a similar f/2.8 version of that lens
  • in APS-C you have better chance to have better exposure with an f/2.8 lens rather than an f/4 lens
  • minimum focus is 15cm (from the sensor). So nice for macro

Great interview. Just one comment from my side.

I rarely use f/4 on my XF10-24mmF4. I use it mainly for landscape and there I stop down anyway. And if I use it in low light, it’s on a tripod anyway (like in this shot in Prague). But that’s my use. I am well aware that for many others f/2.8 might be a big deal on a wide angle zoom.

Coming Spring 2023

When my Old XF23mmF1.4 Beat Sony Full Frame and other Wonderful Moments (but now Welcome my New XF23mmF1.4 R LM WR)

It’s Here

It’s never easy to let go gear you used and loved a lot. Gear like my good old Fujinon XF23mm f/1.4 R for example.

But now the time has come.

I’ve just received the new Fujinon XF23mm f/1.4 R LM WR and I’ve explained the reason why I bought it here already.

The Magic of Making Money by Buying Gear ;)

I bought the lens at Amazon IT here, as they had a better price than my local store and are also qualified for the Fujifilm cashback.

Convincing my wife of this investment went like this:

  1. I don’t need to pay for the lens, because I am paying it with the money I made from the X-T4 sale
  2. there is a sweet deal on the new XF23mmF1.4
  3. by buying the new XF23mmF1.4 I can get rid of the old XF23mm and make even more money
  4. I’ve booked a table for 2 for dinner at a fancy restaurant tomorrow. Yes, only for 2! It will be our first dinner without our son after 2+ years. Grandma is informed, she will watch after our son

This tells us one thing: photography is definitely an expensive hobby when you build up your system, but it gets much cheaper once you can fund new gear by selling old one.

Remember the Good

But I don’t let go my good old Fujinon XF23mm f/1.4 with a light heart, as I had many great moments with it. Let me name a few “episodes”.

Beating Sony ;)

Here is the list of savings available starting from February 16 in Germany (and very likely in many other European countries too).

On February 16 I will pay a visit to my local store to get the Fujinon XF23mm f/1.4 R LM WR ;).

Fujifilm Lays Out its Digital Camera Range without Fujifilm GFX50R and X70 (So What About Successor – SPECULATIONS?)

DO NOT GET ME WRONG!!!!

THIS IS NOT A RUMOR and NOTHING FUJIFILM HAS OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED

All the below are my thoughts, guesses and speculations based on an slide Fujifilm showed and on hints dropped in past Fujifilm statements.

At no point Fujifilm said that both lines are 100% axed. And a slide shown by a regional outlet of Fujifilm has less value than what the official Fujifilm headquarter in Japan says.

None… I repeat, NONE of my sources has told me the Fujifilm GFX50R or X70 won’t get a successor.

Fujfiilm Digital Camera Range

You might remember how a few months ago, Fuji Guy Billy explained the digital camera range of Fujifilm.

The list Billy made gave us indication on which lines are very likely to see a successor and which ones not.

However, in the list Billy did GFX cameras and fixed lens cameras were not included.

And this brings us to today’s article.

I have received the slide you can see above that Fujifilm used during a press meeting.

Just like with Billy’s list, also here we see no entry level X series camera anymore.

In addition to that, this slide contains the Fujifilm X100V, which means it’s a solid part of the family and will get a successor at some point.

The new Fujifilm X-H2 is missing, but only because the slide was shown to press before the launch of the Fujifilm X-H2.

Totally missing though are the Fujifilm X70/XF10 and the Fujifilm GFX50R.

So what does this mean?

Well, the fact that neither the GFX50R nor the X70 are in the list certainly shows that those cameras do not play an important role in Fuji’s lineup anymore.

Regarding the Fujiifilm GFX50R, Fujifilm managers made some conflicting statements: the first one said that they see no need for a GFX50R successor due to the reasons we explained here, and the second manager clearly expressed his wish for this line to continue. So I guess not even in Japan the final word on the GFX50R successor has yet been spoken.

As far as the Fujifilm X70 goes, Fujifilm should not blame the camera for its failure. It was destined to fail due to horrible (can I say “stupid”?) decisions Fujifilm made and that we explained in this article. And to make things worst, they tried to fix it with the Fujifilm XF10, which is just another error in planing. I believe this could be a very successful line… if Fujifilm finally decides to treat it with dignity!

But sure, in times where camera companies struggle, I would not be totally surprised if those cameras, that are not vital for the system, get dropped. It would save R&D to focus on other more popular models.

Also, APS-C is marked as “X-Trans”, so this might indicate that there is no space anymore for Bayer in the APS-C lineup (which so far was reserved for lower end models).

The Latest and Greatest…. NOT!

Not that it is my fault… but I certainly do not help.

I mean, I am attracted by the latest and greatest, my GAS is in constant frenzy (and my wife in constant worries ;)).

My techy-nerdy side is always looking at the details that make the latest and greatest Fujifilm gear better than the one I already own.

With one little distinction: my focus on the latest and greatest does not remain contained to my private life, but I share it publicly here on FujiRumors.

Tens of thousands of fellow X shooters follow me every day in my “obsession” with the latest and greatest, and sometimes the message here on FR might pass, that only what’s brand new and shiny is worth to be considered for this blog.

So let me re-focus, let me for one time ignore whatever Fujifilm has launched in terms of super new gear, and share a roundup that focuses on not so new gear that still brings great joy every day to many of us.

So, I am sorry, Fujifilm X-H2, X-H2S, XF56mmF1.2 R WR, GF20-35mmF4 and even Fujifilm X-T5 and what not. This is not your article. This is not your space.

Nope, this space is for all that gear that came before you and made Fujifilm great, before you even ever saw the light of the day.

Important Note Added by Fujifilm Regarding XF Lenses Supporting 40MP Sensor on X-H2 (and Fujifilm X-T5)

When Fujifilm launched the 40MP Fujifilm X-H2, they also published a list of lenses that get the maximum benefit from the new high resolution sensor.

This led quite some folks (also here on FujiRumors) to believe that the lenses not on the list will not profit at all from the increased resolution.

Some even said that because of this, they won’t upgrade to the 40MP Fujifilm X-H2 (and also the upcoming 40MP Fujifilm X-T5)

I did try to explain that you have to see in other terms: the new sensor will finally let all XF lenses express at their best in terms of resolution. it’s just those not on the list won’t go quite up all the way to 40MP.

Finally Fujifilm understood that the message they put out was potentially confusing and now added a note on their official Fujifilm X-H2 page:

*The list specifies our selection of lenses that have high resolution performance from edge to edge at maximum aperture, allowing you to fully experience all that the 40MP sensor has to offer. Lenses not listed will also allow you to experience the improved resolution performance of the 40MP sensor.”

So if you want 40MP resolution from edge to edge at maximum aperture, then only the lenses on the list will deliver (see list below). But Fujifilm now clearly says that lenses not listed will also deliver improved resolution performance when used on the 40MP sensor.

Hence, if you want more resolution, buying a Fujifilm X-H2 or the Fujifilm X-T5 will give you that also by using lenses that are not on the list.

And from how I read it, some might even resolve all the 40MP when stopped down at least in the center of the frame. Would be nice if Fujifilm would be even more specific on that.

List of Fujinon XF Lenses that Get Maximum Benefit from Fujifilm X-H2 (and X-T5) with 40 Megapixel Resolution

What’s Best on 40MP

Let’s be clear: more or less every single Fujifilm XF lens will perform better on the 40MP sensor. So even if an older lens can’t really resolve all the 40MP, they will still perform better than on the current 26MP sensor. Some might resolve 30MP, others 33MP, others more or less.

In short: the new 40MP sensor will make every single XF lens perform at its best possible in terms of resolution.

And yet, not all take full advantage of the new 40MP sensor. And Fujifilm was kind enough to provide us with a list of lenses, that will get maximum benefit from the X-H2 40MP sensor.

The lenses are:

RUMOR: Fujinon XF150-600mmF5.6-8 with Internal Zoom

Fujifilm has a Fujinon XF150-600mm on the roadmap.

Back in April we unveiled the aperture range: Fujinon XF150-600mm f/5.6-8.

Today we can add one more detail about this lens, that I think will please many of FR-readers who plan to buy this lens: it will have an internal zoom, meaning the size of the lens will always remain the same even if you zoom in all the way at 600mm (900mm equivalent).

Back in 2021 Fujifilm did provide us with some technical sketches about this lens and we used it to make a size comparison to the Fujinon XF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 and the Fujinon XF200mmF2. You can see the size comparison here.

BREAKING: Fujifilm to Release Fujinon XF150-600mm f/5.6-8 (in XF200mmF2 alike Color)

Thanks to our sources, we can now report the aperture range of the Fujinon XF150-600, a lens that has been initially leaked here on FujiRumors back in January 2021 and Fujifilm officially disclosed in September 2021.

According to the information provided to us (thanks!), Fujifilm will release the Fujinon XF150-600mm f/5.6-8. Also, it will be similar in color to the Fujinon XF200mmF2.

Back in 2021 Fujifilm did provide us with some technical sketches about this lens and we used it to make a size comparison to the Fujinon XF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 and the Fujinon XF200mmF2. You can see the size comparison here.

And to be clear, the image above is just a rendering based on the technical sketch of Fujinon XF150-600mmF5.6-8 provided to us directly by Fujifilm. So shape and size are identical to what Fujifilm already disclosed. We just have it rendered in white here and mounted a Fujifilm X-H1 camera.

More rumors are coming… stay tuned ;)
