Steelsring EF/GFX Firmware 3.04 Released (Includes Lens Correction Profile Support)

Share

Steelsring has released firmware 3.04 for their Steelsring EF/GFX adapter. It added Lens correction profile support to EF/GFX adapter, AF accuracy and performance update, and some bug fixes.

Firmware Details

From v3.03, Steelsring added LCP – lens correction profile( distortion and TCA correction ) support to EF/GFX adapter (more about it below – video demos included). CBAF focus accuracy was also improved a lot, make it work better in GFX 50 series camera bodies.

3.04 is a quick update to add more lenses to the support list of LCP suport, more lens support will be available soon.

Lens Correction Profile Support in Steelsring adapters for FUJIFILM cameras

Since 3.03 firmware releases, Steelsring EF/GFX adapter officially supports distortion and TCA correction for selected EF lenses, and Steelsring will add LCP support to their other lens adapters for FUJIFILM cameras.

Steelsring profiles EF lens optical characteristics, convert the distortion and chromatic aberration correction parameters to FUJIFILM model, then incorporates them into EF/GFX firmware releases, and provide to FUJIFILM camera body when being required. These correction parameters are used in following scenarios:

  1. In  camera JPEG production
  2. Lens profile info in RAF file headers
  3. Movie shooting

Steelsring noticed there are some differences in using these correction data when adapter works in different modes. In adapter mode, the distortion correction are disabled or ignored in JPEG productions and RAF files by the camera, an wild guess is to avoid conflicts with those manually correction parameters under adapter setting item of camera body menus. The RAF output file will contain a fake or zero effect distortion correction info to make it totally useless in post processing (can be verified in Photoshop or RawTherapee), in-camera JPEG file was not calibrated either. In FUJIFILM lens mode, everything is normal, in-camera JPEG files are calibrated, and correct parameters are embedded in the RAF files. Even better, user finally can decide how to apply them when importing RAF files in Adobe Camera Raw, just like importing RAF files shot with FUJIFILM GF lenses.

Steelsring EF/GFX adapter customers are suggested to carefully choose adapter’s work mode based on the requirement for Lens Correction Profiles. If a customer wants it in both JPEG and RAF files, please let adapter works in FUJIFILM lens simulation mode.

For an EF lens not profiled by Steelsring yet, it doesn’t matter which working mode adapter is, only a fake or zero effect lens correction profile will be used for JPEG or being embedded for RAF files. For supported lenses, please check firmware release notes.

Comments to videos (videos themselves at the bottom of this article).

  • Video shooting with EF 17-40mm @ 17mm, with distortion and TCA correction
Shoot with GFX 100s and EF 17-40mm f/4 L @ 17mm. In FUJI lens mode, in camera distortion correction is always active when shooting. This video shows the real effect of distortion correction, please ignore any possible influences caused by handheld panning of camera.
  • Video shooting with EF 17-40mm @ 17mm, without distortion correction.
Shoot with GFX 100s and EF 17-40mm f/4 L @ 17mm. In adapter mode, camera turns off in camera distortion correction, but keeps TCA correction. This video shows the real video without distortion correction, please ignore any possible influences caused by handheld panning of camera.
  • Post processing of RAF file by EF 17-40mm f/4 L @ 17mm
At 17mm of EF 17-40L, we see moderately strong barrel distortion, with lens correction profile from Steelsring, it was able to be calibrated when in-camera JPEG production and for post processing of RAF files. When opening RAF file in Photoshop, customer can undo/redo or adjust the amount of lens correction base on our profile. BTW, as we found, usually PS did a little bit better job in TCA correction than FUJI camera does.
  • Post processing of RAF file by EF 17-40mm f/4 L @ 40mm
At 40mm of EF 17-40L, we see mild pincushion distortion, can also be calibrated with built-in lens correction profile from Steelsring adapter for in-camera JPEGs and RAF post processing.
  • RAF file post processing with distortion and TCA control in Photoshop
At 17mm of EF 17-40L, we see moderately strong barrel distortion, with lens correction profile from Steelsring, it was able to be calibrated when in-camera JPEG production and for post processing of RAF files. When opening RAF file in Photoshop, customer can undo/redo or adjust the amount of lens correction base on our profile.
