Fujifilm X-T3 Look Up Table for F-Log Available Now and First Feedback

Fujifilm just released the LUT for the Fujifilm X-T3.

This LUT file is to edit the movie data below when the data is edited by a movie editor on your PC or Mac.

*4K movie data of X-T2 recorded in external HDMI devices with the mode of the “HDMI F-Log” under the “4K MOVIE OUTPUT” in the “MOVIE SETTING”
*4K and Full HD movie data of X-T3 and X-H1 recorded on SD cards or in external HDMI devices with the mode of the “F-Log RECORDING” in the “MOVIE SETTING”

The FR-reader, who passed me the link (thanks) also gave me his first impressions:

“In this update, Fuji simply added X-T3 support, interestingly, the LUTs for X-T3 are brand new and contain different values compared to X-T2/X-H1 versions, it’s safe to assume that Fuji used a different sensor colorimetry in X-T3. If you apply X-T3 LUTs on X-T2/X-H1 F-log footage, the image shows a subtle but visible green bias, compared to the correct LUTs.”

Fujifilm X-T3 in Stock

The Fujifilm X-T3 is now in stock at BHphoto here and Adorama here.

AmazonUS seems to have sold out its stock already, and now expects to ship them within 1 or 2 months. You can still find it at AmazonUS via third party seller.

I just hope this is not a bad sign, meaning that once the first batch is sold, we will have to wait months to get the next one shipping.

The Fujifilm X-T3 is in stock also at CameraPro (AUS) as well as in some EU stores. Check out the full list below.

Fujifilm X-T3 Significantly Improves AF Speed of Older Fujinon Lenses – VIDEO

Dylan Goldby compared the performance of three “older” Fujinon lenses on the Fujifilm X-T3 and Fujifilm X-T2.

  • XF 35mmF1.4 (min 3:18 on X-T3 and min 4:44 on X-T2): Used on the X-T2, it takes more time to lock focus and hunts more. On the X-T3 it is definitely faster and no hunting.
  • XF 23mmF1.4 (min 5:25): This lens seems to benefit the most from the new X-T3
  • XF 56mmF1.2 (min 6:33): X-T3 locks on things more confidently, the X-T2 tends to hunt around and miss
  • Tracking (min 10:25): X-T3 is a big upgrade. Much more keepers
  • Face/Eye detection (min 12:59): works very well. Only thing when the person moves out of the frame, then gets into the frame again from a different distance, then it needs more time to find the face again.

Fujifilm has released the first update for the Fujifilm X-T3, which fixes a few bugs, including the lock-ups.

Along with that, Fujifilm also updated the following software, mainly to add support for Fujfilm X-T3.

The software update Ver.1.3.0 incorporates the following issues:

The software update Ver.1.11.0 from Ver.1.8 incorporates the following issue:

The Evolution of Fujifilm Colors from X-Pro1 to Fujifilm X-T3 and Why DPReview RAW Lab Tests Don’t Show Fujifilm Colors

I am one of the few on this wonderful globe, to have had the privileged to own and shoot with all X-Trans cameras (except the X-Trans 4, until now).

And when in these days I read that the colors on X-Trans 4 might be slightly different from those on X-Trans 3, this does not surprise me at all.

In fact, Fujifilm has always slighlty fine-tuned and changed colors with every Fujifilm X-Trans/processor generation. And they even say it openly here, that they change colors trying to reach “the ideal vision” or “the ideal color reproduction” by taking advantage of new technologies (new sensors/processor).

It’s all about improving Fujifilm colors/film simulations, mostly based on customer feedback.

For example, when people complained that red colors with X-TransII in Velvia are too strong and lose texture too quickly, Fujifilm desaturated the reds a bit with X-Trans III.

So, there is nothing like “THE Fujifilm colors“.

Fujifilm colors change with every new sensor and processor generation. Then it’s up to you to see if they changed for the better or for the worst.

The Problem With DPReview Lab Test

The problem with DPReview lab test is that their Fujifilm X-Trans RAW samples we pixel peeped yesterday don’t show you the Fujifilm colors.

Why?

Because RAW file colors depend on the RAW converter you use (and in case of the X-T3 it’s even just a beta support). And as far as I know, RAWs don’t really have “colors”, but “luminance”. Colors are created during the demosaicing (correct me if I am wrong).

To get the closest results to “real” Fujifilm colors in Lightroom, you would have to apply to the RAW file one of the Fujifilm film simulations presets in Lightroom (Astia for example is great if you want the best skin tones), and then continue to edit your image from there… if there is any need for editing at all, given how amazing Fujifilm film simulations are ;).

Of course, the film simulation profiles in Adobe Lightroom do not match 100% the “in camera” film simulations (or “in X RAW STUDIO”), but they are Adobe’s attempt to get as close as possible to Fujifilm colors, which is already much better than their standard stuff ;) .

So when yesterday some of you compared the RAW file colors, just know that these are not really the “Fuji colors”.
