Fujifilm X-Trans vs Bayer Sensor Quick Blind Test Comparison: Which One do you Prefer?

X-Trans vs Bayer Blind Test

Little weekend game :)

Since we recently talked about Fuji colors vs Nikon, Sony and Canon, let’s do a fun little (and non scientific) blind test with you guys.

This time we compare the Fujifilm X-T20 X-Trans with the Fujifilm X-T100 Bayer CMOS sensor cameras.

Both cameras were used with the Fujinon XC15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS PZ.

Keep in mind that this is not only a comparison between X-Trans and Bayer, but also a comparison between different processing engines.

I did the test, and my score is 1 to 5 for X-Trans. Only for 1 case I could not see a significant difference, in all other cases I went straight for X-Trans.

To my taste, the color rendition of the Fujifilm X-T100 was in some cases a bit exaggerated and less natural, for example in the cloudy sky or the rusty chain. Also, in my eyes, on the X-T20 green/yellow leaves overall looked more natural and less plasticky.

Maybe that’s due to the more aggressive processing applied by the processor used in Fuji’s Bayer cameras, which is something we have analyzed already back in 2013 here, when we compared the Bayer X-A1 to the X-Trans X-M1.

Good Design Award

Fujifilm won 29 awards at the Good Design Awards 2018.

Now, I don’t know how the Good Design Award works, but if it’s like EISA and TIPA, then don’t take it too seriously. We have documented here, how EISA and TIPA work. Check the article out, if you want to know get clarity about the (not so transparent) award business.

With that said, Good Design gave an award to 29 Fuji products. Here are the cameras and lenses:

Fujifilm X-T100 and X-A5 Firmware Updates Released

Fujifilm Firmware Updates

Fujifilm has just released new firmware updates for Fujifilm X-T100 and X-A5.

Fujifilm X-T100 Firmware Ver.1.10 – download here

  1. Advanced Filters “Rich & Fine” and “Monochrome [NIR]”
“Rich & Fine” filter is recommended for food and other tabletop photography. It simulates brighter and more vivid colors at the center of the image and adds slight shadow at the four corners to emphasize the subject. “Monochrome [NIR]” simulates Monochrome effect as taken by near-infrared cameras. These modes will allow photographers to add additional artistic flair or film-like color tones to their photos.
  2. SQUARE MODE: The “SQUARE MODE” allows users to switch to 1:1 format with a single flick on the touchscreen. The “SQUARE MODE” enhances compatibility with social media networks where 1:1 format has become the standard image format for posting photos.
  3. Initial setting of ISO is changed to “AUTO” when switching to P, S, A, M, Adv modes.
  4. Improvement of AF accuracy when pressing the shutter button halfway in AF-C mode.
  5. The phenomenon is fixed that the AF frame in the navigation window in the EVF can shift from the set position when enlarging the focus position display.
  6. The phenomenon is fixed that the highlight warning doesn’t appear in the Info display.
  7. Fix of slight defects.
