The (Late) Rise of the Fujifilm X-T5 and the Definitive Success of Vintage-Camouflaged Modern Cameras

Just recently Fujifilm started to take orders again on Fujifilm X-T5 in Japan. Not all combos, but better than nothing.

And we saw: the Fujifilm X-T5 instantly jumped into the top selling camera ranking on MapCamera.

Well the same thing is happening at Kakaku, which is a pretty popular shopping aggregator in Japan.

At Kakaku, the Fujifilm X-T5 has climbed the ranking up to the second spot, beaten only by the Nikon Zf.

I own the Fujifilm X-T5 myself and it is a camera I can blindly recommend to everyone. It’s Fujifilm at the next level and a huge upgrade over my Fujifilm X-T4 (which I have sold)!

And quite frankly in my opinion the X-T5 is still vastly the better pick over the Nikon Zf for the reasons I’ve explained here.

The success of the Nikon Zf and Fujifilm X-T5 shows that it pays off for companies to make vintage-styled high performing modern cameras.

Which is why I don’t understand why Fujifilm is no longer offering a retro-styled GFX camera. I am sure such a camera would become an instant best seller.

Oh well, let’s hope in the Fujifilm GFX100SII, which should come pretty soon according to our sources.

Viltrox AF 56mm F1.7 XF Autofocus Lens for Fujifilm X Coming Soon

Viltrox has a couple of Fujifilm X mount autofocus lenses in the pipeline for 2024:

Well, it looks like we have to add the Viltrox AF 56mm F1.7 XF to the list of future X mount autofocus lenses for the Fujifilm X mount.

The price of the Viltrox AF 56mm f/1.7 XF should be similar to the one of the Viltrox AF 20mm F2.8 FE, which would be definitely a fantastic pricing as also highlighted by the Chinese Weibo account 独立摄影师联合会 who spotted the new lens.

So time for us to update the third party autofocus lens list for 2024:

Fujifilm X-T6 in 2024? Let’s Talk about it!

After I have shared my Fujifilm 2024 – What’s Coming article, lots of you dropped me comments and emails, indicating that there should be also a Fujifilm X-T6 in 2024.

The reason why so many of you believe 2024 will be the year of Fujifilm X-T6, is because the X-T line got refreshed every two years:

  • 2014 = X-T1
  • 2016 = X-T2
  • 2018 = X-T3
  • 2020 = X-T4
  • 2022 = X-T5
  • 2024 = X-T6?

So an X-T6 has to come in 2024, right?

Well, it could be.

I have no rumors telling me it won’t come in 2024. So it’s possible.

But the list above does not really tell the whole story.

Tokina X mount – The Missing Lens

First stores in Japan are starting to mark the following Tokina autofocus lens trinity as discountinued and in USA we have Adorama marking the Tokina 23mmF1.4 and Tokina 33mmF1.4 in “Closeout”.

I can’t really say I am surprised about it, as these are Viltrox clones at a higher price. And many other manufacturers offer autofocus lenses in that range too.

To make things worst, Tokina reacted to bad sales by increasing prices on their X mount lenses, which basically killed any chance for those lenses to sell in sufficient numbers.

And yet, there is one Tokina lens, for APS-C mirrorless, that could be very successful.

It’s already available for Sony E mount and it’s this lovely Tokina lens here.

Now, I hope Tokina won’t be discouraged to continue their X mount journey due to the bad sales of their first attempt, because I believe that the Tokina 11-18mmF2.8 would sell significantly better. The only true competitor in that range would be the Sigma 10-18mmF2.8, hence there would be still enough room for sales.
