Mirrorless Sports Shootout: Tony Northrup Compares Fujifilm X-T3, Canon EOS R, Nikon Z7, Sony A7III, Sony A7RIII, Sony A9

Mirrorless Sports Shootout

Which one is the best mirrorless camera for sports between the Fujifilm X-T3, Canon EOS R, Nikon Z7, Sony A7 III, Sony A7R III and Sony A9?

Tony Northrup tries to answer this in his latest review, and here is what he concludes, from the best to the worst.

Fujifilm X-T3: BHphoto, AmazonUS, Adorama, Focuscamera

1) Sony A9 – WINNER

  • 20 fps and with some lenses (such as the Sony GM 400mm F2.8) it can achieve 20 sharp images
  • no blackout
  • it’s very expenisve, so Tony would push people to Fujifilm X-T3, because it is so much cheaper and a great all around camera

2) Fujifilm X-T3 (with XF50-140) – 2nd PLACE

  • Tony’s favorite camera to use overall
  • 30 fps with no EVF blackout, but tacking tends to slow down to about 12 fps and only an average of 8.5 are in focus
  • tacking side to side is only OK, like the Sony
  • better than Sony A7III and A7rIII
  • APS-C, less DOF and more noise. He says Fujifilm can fix both this by releasing fast lenses (such as the XF200mmF2, which is full frame equivalent 300/2.8 [I add also the XF33mmF1.0]
  • amazing video camera

3) Sony A7R III

  • Very close to A7III
  • more megapixel allow you to crop more
  • workable subject tracking, but not very reliable

4) Sony A7 III

  • dual SD-card slot, but one is only USH-I, which does makes buffer slow
  • whole camera locks up while writing to buffer
  • 5.2 sharp images out of 8
  • better selection of native glass than Canon EOS R and Nikon Z7
  • 8fps on paper, but only 5 in focus on average
  • Sony is not well known for good weather sealing

5) Nikon Z7

  • effective 4 fps, but only 60% in focus, hence about same performance to Canon EOS R
  • impracticable user interface
  • stick with your D500 or D850, where AF works better
  • single SD-card slot

6) Canon EOS R

  • the worst
  • only 2.5 shots in focus
  • slow but accurate
  • no jostick
  • single card slot
  • you can adapt lots of long Canon glass, but focus is not as fast as when used on DSLR

Fuji X-T2 at Hockey Game: “I Never Used My Canon 1Dx That I Brought As Insurance”

X-shooter and FXF member Matthias46 was out for an official work with his brand new Fujifilm X-T2. His job? Photograph a Hockey Game. I’ll let you see the images here at the Fuji X Forum and just share his feedback regarding the AF-speed:

First official work. I’d say is pretty pretty good. I need more experience in tweaking the Autofocus to my liking, but with the Universal one the behaviour is really good! Never used my Canon 1Dx that i brought as insurance.”

If you have any questions for Matthias46, drop them here.

Another one, who seems to be extremely satisfied with the X-T2 AF-performance is Bob Roman. In his video he says:

I took a sequence of pictures of Samantha. It was a burst of 54 images using the XF56mmF1.2 @ f/1.2. I had the camera in face/eye detect [NOTE: this disables the faster Phase Detection], continuous Autofocus, and this burst of 54 images, 51 were in focus!

Now she was walking towards me, not a particularly difficult task, but what’s important to notice is that I was shooting with the XF56mmF1.2 lens, not one of the fastest AF-performers amongst the Fuji lenses. I was also shooting wide open at 1.2! As you can see, the camera performed exceptionally well! [NOTE: This performance has been achieved without vertical battery grip]”

Ok guys, I slowly start to be cautiously optimistic, that the Fujifilm X-T2 Autofocus is really quite a big step forward compared to the X-T1.

Fuji Guy Billy: “For Sports, X-T2 closing gap to DSLRs” :: Fuji X-T2 meets the World… and makes an Awesome Video!

X-T2 Films the World

X-photographer Daniel Malikyar traveled the world with his X-T2 and captures it in HQ. What we get is a short and beautiful video, that not only demonstrates the massively improved image quality compared to X-TransI/II cameras, but also an invitation to travel and meet the beauty out there that is waiting to be captured with our X-series cameras. Check it out on youtube.

X-T2 Sport Photography – Fuji Guy Billy

As Fuji’s Vice President, Fuji Guy Greg does not really have much time anymore to make the Fuji Guy videos with Billy. But for the X-T2 launch, we can see them together again. Greg introduces, and Billy goes over the X-T2 features.

And Billy also makes a bold claim regarding the Fuji X-T2 Sport Photography capabilities. I quote:

Our Top Selling camera, the X-T1, really did lot of good things […] but when it came to sports the C-AF wasn’t there yet. […]

When it comes to professional sports photography, the mirrorless cameras will be the future. And we are kind of closing that gap today with the Fujifilm X-T2.

And how should the X-T2 achieve that?

  1. AF-algorithm: The X-T2 will always try to use the fast phase detection to focus. But when it can’t get focus, it quickly switches to contrast detection and as soon as possible jumps right back to phase detection. This algorithm improvement reduces the “wobbling effect “(the images coming in and out of focus when you use the continuous AF features). Moreover, when shooting birds for example, the algorithm is able to ignore the background and track the bird.
  2. AF-C custom settings: For example, you can now tell the camera to keep tracking one subject at least for 1.5 seconds before looking for another focus.
  3. EVF black out time. Especially at 5fps the black out time is that short, that you can easily track your subject and the camera can better focus between each shot.

Interesting note: Fuji Guy Billy says that they improve their cameras not only based on feedback from X-photographers, but they look also at what people say in the internet (I think he ment also you guys :) ) – but that’s not a surprise
