What to Expect from Fujifilm in 2024 (and What Probably Not)

Share

Fujifilm 2024

In November we have shared quite some rumors (as you can see here). And not only that! In our previous 2024 outlook, we forgot to add gear that Fujifilm has already pre-announced to come in 2024 as well as give you a look into rumored third party AF lenses.

That’s why we need to update our view into the Fujifilm year 2024.

All the X/GFX rumors come from our sources, whereas the speculations are often based on hints and comments that managers gave in interviews.

Remember, Fujifilm will launch 3 or more cameras in the first months of 2024. This means there are still more cameras we have to (and we will) leak here on FujiRumors.

X/GFX GEAR COMING FOR SURE

  • Fujinon XF16-50mm f/2.8-4.8 R LM WR

It’s sure, the next XF lens that Fujifilm will launch is the replacement of this lens here.

But it won’t be a true MKII version. It will be the Fujinon XF16-50mm f/2.8-4.8 R LM WR.

That’s so far the only Fujinon lens we leaked for 2024, but stay tuned on FujiRumors. As soon as I hear more, I will let you know.

  • Fujifilm X100V Successor

It’s coming in early 2024 and it will have the same lens of the X100V (hence no OIS).

And you guys predicted to be called X100R, where “R” stands for “Roku” (“six” in Japanese).

I am currently making significant progress on this rumor front, so you can expect important updates as soon as the check are done and the information is multiple confirmed.

  • Fujifilm GFX100S II

The Nr.1 speculation was: the GFX100S line is dead, because Fujifilm merged the GFX100 and GFX100S into a single line by offering the GFX100 II with detachable grip.

But that’s wrong.

Our sources told us that the next interchangeable lens camera that Fujifilm will launch is the Fujifilm GFX100S II.

Now the question is what the differences to the Fujifilm GFX100 II could be, and we speculated about them in this article here.

  • Fujinon GF500mm f/5.6

It’s on the official Fujinon G mount roadmap.

We have already used the technical sketches Fujifilm provided to make a size comparison with current GF lenses

Yes, there is also the Fujinon GF Power Zoom lens on the roadmap, but that one is scheduled for 2025 as you can see here.

Camera Speculations
(also based on Fujifilm Manager Statements)

Back in 2022, Fujifilm rather clearly said which camera lines will continue in future (and which one not).

And out of all the cameras they said will continue to be developed, the following ones are still waiting for a 5th generation refresh:

  • Fujifilm X-Pro4
That’s probably the camera I get asked about most. That’s why I want to be 110% accurate with this one and I want to triple check the information I have received as quickly as possible. Thanks to the new source for the information btw. As you can see, I feel particular pressure on this one to be super-accurate. But new and trusted sources together can relieve me from this pressure ;).
  • Fujifilm X-E5
Fujifilm said in 2022 the X-E line will continue and they said also very recently that a Fujifilm X-E5 is not “forgotten”. So we can hope for it to come, although, just as with the X-Pro4, so far I don’t have solid rumors about it. But to make things a bit more complicated on this one, there was a manger who recently said here that entry level (and he included X-E line in this) is dead.
  • Fujifilm X-T40
Of course Fuji intents to continue also this line, since it is pretty successful. Although so far the X-S20 is doing a great job in closing the entry-level gap in the X lineup and an X-T40 is not the most urgent camera to release. Hence, it will certainly not come in 2023, as many expected. But also in this case I am still working on more solid rumors.

To be clear: none of the above is a rumor. It’s all just speculations triggered by Fujifilm manager statements.

Fujifilm’s Vague Hint to Telephoto Lenses

Given that in the entire year of 2023 we got just this single XF lens, it is safe to assume that for 2024 Fujifilm will have more to offer.

So what could we get in addition to the Fujinon XF16-50mm f/2.8-4.8?

The only hint Fujifilm gave us recently was, when in an interview with DPReview they said:

  • Fujifilm is adding focus for sports and wildlife, as Fujifilm is not yet known for that
  • X-H2S is oriented towards that segment and “in terms of lenses, we’re also introducing more longer lenses”
  • we will continue to cultivate [the sports and wildlife segment]

So, telephoto lenses seem to something Fujifilm is considering. Maybe, just for once, we will get one of those patented lenses?

But until now all we have are wishes and hopes. And you guys have a pretty clear idea on what the priorities should be.

Third Party AF lenses

In 2023 we got these 16 third party autofocus lenses for the Fujifilm X mount and it’s safe to assume that more will follow in 2024.

In fact, some of them have already been officially teased by the various companies or at least rumored:

And then there are some lenses, that are not even rumored, but I strongly hope (no rumor) will come also for the X system.

For example this lovely Tokina lens for mirrorless APS-C and maybe also the X mount version of Venus Optics first autofocus lens, the Laowa 10mm f/2.8. But no rumors about such lenses for now.

The Forgotten Camera

  • Fujifilm X80

If done properly, the X80 could be wonderful cameras that would gain lots of love and a loyal fellowship. But so far we have no rumors nor hints about it coming. That’s why at this moment I am rather pessimistic about the Fujifilm X80 coming in 2024. But if any source out there can give me a reason to hope, feel free to contact me.

GFX50R Line Future

  • GFX50R Successor

There are two statements made by Fujifilm managers that I would like to highlight regarding the Fujifilm GFX50R successor

This manager said that the goal of GFX50R was to make GFX system more compact. Now with the GFX100S out too, Fujifilm does see “less need for something even more compact [than GFX100S]
This manager said he would like the GFX50R to evolve.

The second, more optimistic statement, was clearly more of a wish expressed by the design manager. Whereas the first statement seemed to be less of a wish, but more of a believe inside the company that there is no more need for the GFX-R line.

What I think we can say, is that the GFX50R line does not seem to be a priority for Fujifilm. If that means it will take long to get a successor or if it will simply never comes remains to be seen.

Given the circumstances (a likely more X series centric 2024) and Fujifilm manager statements (“we see less need for a the GFX-R line“), I would not be surprised if not even in 2024 we would get a new GFX-R.

It’s a shame. It’s a pity. But it’s probably the camera line I am most pessimistic about for 2024. And you bet I hope to be terribly wrong in my impression (not rumor).

Roadmap Desires

Fujifilm has given us a new G mount lens roadmap in September 2023.

But there has not been any update to the X mount roadmap in a long time. So I hope (no rumors at all about it) that at some point (the earlier, the better) Fujifilm will just give us a new X mount roadmap.

I’ve explained in this video why Fujifilm can only win, if they share a new roadmap. So far they ignored my recommendation.

Firmware Desires

Kaizen!

I want, I require, I order Fujifilm to give me all the new goodness the GFX100II incorporates also to my Fujifilm X-T5 and also to X-H2, X-H2S and X-S20.

Reala Ace, touch to track in video, waveforms, vectorscopes and more (anamorphic mode for example).

And I also want the full auto subject detection feature of the X-S20 on all other 5th generation cameras, and we already showed Fujifilm how they could implement it on other cameras.

Do this Fujifilm. Trust me. Just do it.

INSTAX

The Instax Mini 99 is coming will all new special effects ;).
