What We Expect to See from Fujifilm in 2021… and What Not!
What we Expect from Fujifilm
I thought I make a quick list of cameras and lenses that we could see in 2021, and what we surely will not get in 2021.
ATTENTION: It’s a mix of rumors, speculations and hopes. So read carefully to distinguish one from another.
2021 will be full of rumors, so make sure to follow FujiRumors on Facebook, Facebook, RSS-feed, Twitter, Youtube and Instagram.
X/GFX Cameras 2021
X Series Cameras
Here is what is rumored, but according to my sources is sure:
But will it be all for 2021?
I don’t think so, and here is why:
FACT: we have seen here, that in the last few years, Fujifilm has released 4 cameras a year. But each year, one of them was a Fujifilm branded entry level camera made by Xacti (X-A7 and X-T200). So if there is any pattern, we can say that Fujifilm usually releases 3 cameras a year (made by Fujifilm and not outsourced).
If (and that’s a big “IF“) Fujifilm keeps the pace of the last years, we would see at least 1 more camera coming in addition to the X-E4 and GFX100S.
And here is where we leave the rumors, and enter speculations.
I know a Fujifilm X80 would make Kevin Mullins so happy (and many others, too). But only if it has to have a flip up screen, an X-Trans sensor, and hence is a true X70 successor. However, given that Fujifilm is about to launch a compact Fujifilm X-E4 with flip up screen, I am rather pessimistic that the X80 is still on the agenda (but i hope to be wrong).
Also the X-T30 could need a refresh in form of a Fujifilm X-T40, but it remains to see if the huge success of the X-S10 will somehow delay the release of the X-T40 for at least as long as the X-S10 sells good (and so far it sells like hot cakes).
The elephant in the room is of course the Fujifilm X-H2!
Fujifilm managers clearly said the X-H2 will come, but they need to achieve a breakthrough. I don’t know you, but to me this sounds like it is not really around the corner, making me rather pessimistic that it will come in the first half of 2021. UPDATE: Fujifilm X-H2 will come in 2022
Surely we won’t get an X-Pro4. The X-Pro line has a slow 4 year refresh cycle. Also, don’t expect an X200 or so. The X100V is still rather new and sells strong. Fujifilm is absolutely not in a hurry to refresh that one.
Entry level cameras? Well, given the epic failure of the X-T200 and X-A7, I just see no point in continuing to insist to release entry level cameras.
GFX Series Cameras
With the Fujifilm GFX100S on its way, many FujiRumors readers expressed their hope to see also a MK II version of either the GFX50S or the GFX50R.
To be clear, I have no information if something like that will come in 2021, but if any additional GFX cameras comes in 2021, then I think MK II versions are more likely than the options we will list next.
In fact, what surely won’t come, is a monochrome Fujifilm GFX! No matter how much people talk about it, it is just not on Fuji’s radar for now. I am also less optimistic about a fixed lens X100 styled Fujifilm GFX camera.
And just out of curiosity, I would like to ask you in a survey below, which one you would like to get:
Full Frame Fujifilm
I doubt there will be any full frame Fujifilm camera in 2021. Not even a fixed lens full frame X100 alike camera. Looks like Fujifilm was terribly serious when they said “Fujifilm will never go full frame“.
X/GFX Lenses 2021
X System
Sure for 2021:
And now the speculations (not rumor):
There is a patent showing an XF 300mm F4 and XF 500mm F5.6. But I told you not to expect such lenses in 2021. Will they come in 2022, 2023 or maybe never? I don’t know, but I am working on it and give you updates as soon as I have some.
Among Fuji X shooters, there is strong request for MK II lenses. In fact, when Fujifilm asked us which lenses they should make next with this survey, 4 of the top 6 lenses you wanted are refreshes of older lenses.
Also, in the same survey, the top spot was taken by the Fujinon XF 10mm F2.
Remember: this was an official list made by Fujifilm of possible upcoming lenses for the X system. So it would make sense for Fujifilm to pick lenses that reached the top positions in our wishes.
GFX System
In the last 2 years, Fujifilm has released 2 GF lenses a year.
Until now, Fujifilm has just announced one lens: the GF 80mm F1.7. But If they keep up with this pace, then we can expect one more lens coming in 2021.
Which one could it be?
Well, Fujifilm asked GFX shooters here, which G mount lenses they would like to get in future. Among the options in their survey, there were just tilt shift lenses. So I guess that’s something Fujifilm is strongly considering.
Some of you might also remember that back in 2017 we leaked an internal G mount roadmap, which displayed lenses we received in the following years. It also included one lens, that has not yet materialized, the GF 20-36mm F3.5-4.5. The roadmap also said Fujifilm would decide between the GF20-36 and the GF100-200mmF5.6. Evidently they went for the GF100-200, which was announced in 2019.
But maybe, now that this is done, Fujifilm could decide to work again on that nice Fujinon GF 20-36mm F3.5-4.5.
The BONUS Surprise
Sigma is coming ;).
I have no clue on which lenses Sigma will launch, but let’s hope they will be smart enough to invest in glass that is not yet well covered by existing Fujinon lenses.
